I played it for the first time on Sunday 2/26. Wow. As a high handicap player, I found it extremely challenging, yet a great time. Greens were very tough, very fast. But the course was in good shape, and the pace of play was excellent. The service was great as well. I will definitely go back.

Black Gold is a very challenging course. Hit the fairway with your tee shot and the odds are against you having a level lie. Greens are lightning fast and if you are above the hole, the ball will never stop rolling. If you land below the hole, the ball will back up off the green. As a 14 handicapper I found it very unenjoyable! I payed $30 and would never play there again even at that price.

Played 2/14/12. Greens and fairways are firm and fast. Greens very good condition, and rolling smoothly. Fairways are thin in spots, but playable. I suspect kikuya turf will start filling in later in spring and summer. Kikuya around greens is much more challenging than previous rye grass. Bunkers I visited were perfect. Just enough depth in sand, and firm base at the right depth. Always great service inside and out. Always easy to find internet special rates, which makes this the best value in OC. Enjoy!

I have played BG many times, fairly local to me, and by far the best, with Coyote Hills a close second. The staff is always friendly and helpful, starters are great. Nice range to warm up on as well. The course is a bit tough, as it is a fairly hilly course. The greens are well maintained, and the fairways are decent (they do allot of work to try and maintain them as best they can). This is a good all around course, with some tough holes (13 and 17), and a great back 9 if you want to grab a quick, earlybird 9 holes (which I do often in the summer). I am never rushed on the early tees, and we have the place to ourselves then. Scenery is great as it is set up in the hills, and certainly a recommended club to play in the area. If you play there fairly often, the Players Club is worth it. This is certainly one of the best Orange County public courses, and rarely overcrowded or too slow. I only plyed behind a slow foursome once, but they were on it quickly and had us play through on the 10th. Pro shop folks are awesome....

Played 12/10. As mentioned in previous reviews, kikuya transition is taking hold. Some areas of the kikuya are a bit thin, but BG is making every effort to get the course in great condition. IMO, when spring rolls around, the fairways surface will be very good. While there are currently spots in fairway marked as GUR, you won't have a problem dropping to a good lie. Greens are rolling nicely, and quite fast. Bunkers that I found myself in were all good. Always great customer service, and a great place to play and enjoy the environment. Scenic rolling hills, elevation changes, and a great variety of holes makes for a challenging and enjoyable track. Been one of my favorites in OC for 10 years.

Played Sunday. 12:30 tee time, although did not go off till 1:00. Had a tournament go off late. Sunday Tournament? Unbelievable, I have never come across a Sunday Tourney in OC the busiest day of golf. Should of had a marshall pushing play if this was the case. We would of finished had we had not gone off late. Greens were real good rolling but not consistent with breaks. Sand was thin at bottom of bunkers, fairways were exactly that(fair). Rough was okay, tee boxes were a bit beat up. Not for $65, no way!

Played 18 holes on 11/23 morning and 13 in the afternoon ($10 replay special). Hadn't played here in few years and didn't know what to expect with some recent reviews being positive and others negative. The course layout and greens was decent. However, the fairways are REALLY BAD! This is a real nice track and I hope whatever remediation they are doing improves the condition soon. Before then, I would avoid it.

After hearing the promising news about a cucuya grass transition, I took a chance and played Sunday, 13-Nov-11. While I did indeed see some nice fairway grass which may eventually grow in, there are two words to describe Black Gold today: Dog Track. The service was very good-regular cart girl visits, pleasant starter, excellent restaurant service (nice girl with braces).

The fairways were (on average) thin and hacked up badly. At least three sand traps were basic hardpan with only minimal sand. My wedge bounced off a good lie and my ball went thin and long. The tee boxes and greens were in pretty good shape, but for this kind of money you'd think people would fix their divots.

Another positive was pace of play. We teed off around 800 and finished before 1230. One reason might be the unfortunate condition of this challenging track. I really do hope course maintenance mgt invests the time and effort to bring Black Gold back-I was really disappointed.
