Played over Labor Day weekend.
This is just an average course that has decent elevation changes as you play this OC course through a housing development. Actually, the houses are not that close, but I did see a few balls in some of the homes backyards. As the course makes it way though the neighborhood, you are hitting mostly to elevated greens and angled fairways. A few blind tee shots make course knowledge important and hopefully you won't hit groups on your or on parallel fairways. Water comes into play on about four or five holes, but don't seem to present that much deterrence.

Course in decent enough shape. Funny...some of the greens were in pretty poor shape with bare spots and lots of lumps; others were immaculate. My only complaint about this course is the rebuilt bunkers. Wonderful that they're making efforts to improve course, but the sand in the bunkers is impossible to hit out of. There must be over a foot of sand in each bunker. And, it's that heavy, cheap beach sand. When you sink to your ankles in the sand in the bunker, that just ain't right. Staff was courteous. It's a good golf course, except for the bunkers.

Course recently rebuilt almost all sand traps(40+) and par three tees. Conditions are great for August. Rates are low and pace of play was really good.

Summer traffic taking it's toll on The Hills. Greens were fine, although bumpy, but we were playing toward end of day. Tee boxes were all hacked up, except for the new tee boxes on #7 and #9. Fairways are lush; rough is good length. Bunkers...well, the new sand is just too "thick." It really is like beach sand. Looks good, but extremely penal. They took out fairway bunker at the dogleg on #6. Same with a fairway bunker on #8. Great pace of play (walked in 4.25 hours) and can't beat the price. Only complaint this time around was with staff in clubhouse. Brett behind the counter was great. But, the other gentleman gave one player in our group a hard time about wearing a shirt without a collar. Yes, our fourth probably should have worn a collared shirt, but we are regulars, and we respect the course (the guy without the collared shirt was a first time player at this facility). The uncollared shirt he was wearing was tasteful. Plain blue. Clean. No holes. There was no need to call him out on it in front a clubhouse full of patrons. Does that mean Tiger would get called out for wearing an $80 Nike "t-shirt?" Hell, I've played San Juan Hills with walk on yahoos in budweiser t-shirts and swim trunks! I think a better way to handle it would have been to say to the player "for future reference, our dress code is proper golf attire which includes a collared shirt. Next time we'd appreciate you wearing the proper attire." Not, "do you have a collared shirt." No need to embarrass the customer, especially when the customer respects the course and isn't an idiot. I hope that gentleman called out the six other guys I saw on the course in t-shirts that were plastered with logos for beer companies and titty bars! The employee in question has always been polite and professional in the past, and I understand the policy, I just think it could have been handled in a better way.

Played a charity tournament on the 20th and the course was in fantastic shape. The greens were mown tight and smooth. These greens putted better than most courses that cost the same or more. Fairways were firm and gave some roll on the drives, and were tight enough to allow you to control the spin. The bunkers were good. although a few were still under construction. Will definitely make the drive up there again. Great course and friendly staff.

I played the back nine Saturday AM. The course is in very nice shape; the greens were a little slow but that's all right for San Juan Hills. Very smooth greens and fairways. 2 hours for 9 holes - a great way to start the day. For $20 (+ $7 for a cart), you can't beat it in the area. Plus the carts have GPS which moves things along quite nicely.

Played for the first time in a tournament last Sunday June 5th. Felt like two different courses. The front nine felt like a regular muni, with holes next to each other, lined with trees. The back nine felt like a newer style resort course, a little better manicured with houses lining the holes. There was still some construction going on, with the par 3 7th hole playing from some temporary tees. Greens were a bit on the bumpy side, soft and very receptive, with some holes cut on some pretty severe slopes. A couple of the tee boxes felt a bit unlevel. Marshalls seem to be pretty active, and were pretty visible throughout. Course also felt pretty lush, especially the rough, as if it had not been mowed in a few days. The service was very nice, with one of the most cheerful beverage cart girls ever.

I played San Juan May 24 . . . Loved it . . . They are filling the bunkers with soft sand . . . Greens were nice and GREEN . . . Great Customer Service all around . . . TWO THUMBS UP ! ! ! !

I've been playing San Juan Hills for about 7 years now and the greens are in the best shape I've ever seen them. Fairways were super lush, too. BUT, they're doing a lot of work on the course. MAJOR WORK. Tee boxes on 7 and 9 are being completely redone (bulldozers at work on 7). So, #7 plays to less than 100 yards. And the distance on 9, is off (don't trust the gps) from temp tee box. They're also doing lots of work on the bunkers. All new sand in bunkers on front, but still old hardpan in bunkers on back. Right hand greenside bunker on #3 has been torn out and is being refurbished so it's ground under repair. All the work and the distractions that come with it (pick up trucks speeding past you as you put or through your line of sight as you hit from the fairway) is a little unsettling. So, I think, as a goodwill gesture, green fees should be lowered, even by just $5, or they should offer a free drink after your round, for all the inconvenience. It's only gonna get worse as they start doing all the major construction later this summer. Not worth $52 on a Friday with all the work going on, and would never pay $63 on weekend, even without the workers all over the place. That, said, course is in fabulous shape (except for construction zones). And the staff was awesome, as usual.
