About as good of shape as it has been in recent years. Yes, there are some dicey spots in the rough where it can be completely bare and/or 'choppy', but for the most part your can play out of it. The fairways are better than usual, but inconsistency in types of grass can make your lie problematic, but not impossible by any means. The greens were in excellent shape and rolling medium-fast and very smooth. The tee boxes were healthy but for some long-standing reason are always lower on the left hand side which makes it tough to find an even lie. The bunkers were all great, -at least the five that I were in.

John, in the pro shop, is always great and does what he can to make you feel welcome.

Yes, you don't get the best conditions in the IE, but it's a very good way to save a few bucks and get in a nice 18 holes.

On another note: The men's club plays Wednesday morning and they play at a snail's pace! If you're behind them, just relax, because you're not going anywhere real fast.

Played after work 5/1/12. Course is in better shape than I can ever remember but is still pretty bad. Tee boxes looked pretty good but almost all are uneven, rough is always a mixture of good, decent and terrible but the good was actually really good then there where the usual thin and completely bare areas. Most bare spots are near the trees and a few yards off the side of the greens. Fairways were okay but a little patchy and some bare areas. Sand has a ton of rocks and were firm. Greens were soft, receptive and painfully slow but looked great. Pace was good which is unusual (I've had 3+ hour for 9 holes before). Lots of freeway noise and they raised there twilight in the past 2 years from $15-$20 to ride. Still $10 to walk after 3. Decent deal but with Sierra Lakes a few miles down the road you can play for $29 after 3 with if you are on there email list and definitely get your moneys worth.

At $15 (cart included for the winter super twilight rate), I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised by Shandin Hills. My playing partner and I walked right on last week (weekday afternoon) and briskly played 18 holes before the sun went down in about 3 1/2 hours.

The course was in good shape. Not all of the greens were perfectly manicured, and neither the fairways nor tee boxes were in immaculate condition. Still, at less than a dollar per hole, I kept finding myself saying, "Hey, this isn't bad at all."

I laughed when a train rumbled down alongside one of the fairways as my buddy was addressing his ball. The 215 freeway is also visible at various points on the course, especially the start of the back nine. Not exactly a quiet and pristine environment, but it shouldn't distract any but the most uptight golfers.

Water comes into play on the 9th (slight dogleg left), 15th (carry over most of 165 yards from the back tee on this par 3), and the 18th (for my fellow slicers). The par 3 7th has a nice view of the course from its elevated tee box, down to the well-guarded green 178 yards away.

After daylight savings kicks in this weekend (3/11), the super twilight rate of $16 begins at 3pm. As long as it's not crowded, it shouldn't be a problem playing all 18 before the sun sets. Shandin Hills is an excellent value for local players and for those passing through the area.

Nice layout but it is a bit out of control. No marshals. Big gaps of one hole or more between groups. Played with a couple who were getting high and drunk and didn't seem like they played much before. Luckily they quit after 13 holes.

If the course was actually maintained and marshaled it might be a nice play to play. But it is not.

The sad thing, the greenskeepers need to change tires on their mower and sprayer. The tires are leaving tracks from the machines. Other than that? The greens are back to the way they were in 1999-2005.
Tee boxes need major over hauling. I hope they work on that soon. Seems they are slowly improving. Keep up the good work.

Well worth the green fees!

Wow ! What happened to this course. I have been playing here since the course opened in 1985 (Albeit only once or twice a year) and I have never seen the course in worse condition! The fairways are thin at best, lots of bare areas, Tees - same story, Traps are quasi-mud in spots.

However the greens are excellent! The only redeeming part of the course. This is sad because I have always liked this course. I recognize the economy has caused cuts in budget, but there are some serious maintenance issues here that need to be addressed.

$21 to play with cart - a great deal ???? Actually that is all this place is now worth - sorry to say!
