Had a Friday morning 8am tee time at BPGC. Check in and first tee were well organized. Course is in very good condition and very busy, tees fairways and rough had good coverage. Traps had a good layer of sand and well groomed. Starter gave me a heads up on the speed of the greens and he was right. Greens were smooth and quick with little to no unfixed divots. POP was a little over four hours and was an enjoyable day of golf.

Went off first at twilight yesterday 1/22. Finished in just under 4 hours without a wait until the 13th. Course is in really good shape in all the areas one should be playing from. Tees, fairways, rough, bunkers all in good shape with greens being in excellent shape. The greens are really fast (Torrey fast), smooth and tricky right now, such a pleasure to putt on! A little soggy in places, but a good play right now.

Played 1/7/2020 and off about 10 minutes after scheduled tee time. Course is in great shape. Fairways are full and lush with great lies throughout. The greens are particularly smooth and rolling FAST. Rough not very penal at the moment. For my money, Balboa provides just about as interesting round with a variety of shots and a challenging walk for exercise as you can find in San Diego. Only knock would be PoP, which was close to 5 hours. Other than that, I don't think there's a better value right now.

Last chance to play, possible, for the next week or so, so I went out at 11:37. Course is in good, playable condition with fast, good rolling greens and bunkers in great shape (the two highlights) the rest of the course very playable with some rough spots here and there. Lots of roll out on fairways but still great lies. Get out there!

Played yesterday, Saturday Oct 5th. Walked on as a single around 9:45 and Danny, the very nice guy in the pro shop, got me out around 10:15. I was very happy about this and he is a great guy. Got paired up with 3 great guys that play there quite a bit, Donny, Alex and Greg. They were excellent to play with, very fast, although POP was 4hr 45mins, not their fault, it was busy out there as usual and half hour wait on 6 tee, as usual, just a joke. They need to do something about that, mandatory wave up, maybe? I don't know, it's a tough par3 and there's usually a bunch of hacks out there playing the tips, so... $40 to walk as a resident, so worth it for a weekend round.

Anyway, on to course conditions. they did some major aeration and sanding a few weeks ago, so it's still showing signs of this. The teeboxes weren't that great, looks like they are getting ready to do some more work on them, so that's good. They were pretty bare with lots of divot damage, so you had to look for a little bit to find a good spot.

Fairways were just ok, they were also sanded a few weeks ago, so they still need some time to heal.

Found one bunker and is was in ok shape. A little hard and wet underneath, but not a big deal.

The rough was very penal in many areas. It's getting thick, so beware.

The greens rolled ok and held shots pretty well. Still need a few more weeks to heal from the aeration.

No beverage cart, but Danny in the pro shop warned me about that. Appreciate that. I have a cooler in my bag so I come prepared with a few cold ones and then purchased a couple of beers at the turn. Overall an enjoyable day, but I'd wait a few more weeks for everything to heal from the maintenance.

First off at twilight on 9/5, POP 4 hrs 15 mins. Warm, but the breezes coming through the canyons make it much nicer. Course is in decently playable shape, rough is thick (gotta love city courses they can afford to water like that! LOL), fairways mostly good in the areas you should be playing from, but there are some dried out/burnt out/thin areas, tee boxes ok, bunkers thin but consistent and playable, greens were fast and the pins were tucked (women's club tourney in the morning, they had it playing tough for them gals!).
Overall a good play, not great (the glory days before Candice and Sinclair were sent off to Torrey are long gone) it is a muni, but the greens are rolling well and the place is getting plenty of water!

Played Balboa Park Golf course yesterday morning. 7th or 8th time I have played in the past couple of years. The course is in as good a shape as any time I can recall! A couple of greens have what might be a little fungus, but overall very healthy greens and fairways. We teed off at 7:45am and finished at right about 4 hours. This course is walkable, and there was a foursome of ladies just ahead of us that were doing just fine. However, the course is not flat, so you do need to be in decent shape.

This is a municipal course, so don't expect a country club experience. But, for a muni it is a great value at $59 on a weekend. Your view from the 11th tee box of downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and on a clear day, the Coronado Islands is a Kodak moment for sure!
