Played at Marine Memorial Golf Course on 8/10. This was my first time at this course and overall it is in decent condition. Played in the afternoon, so the weather was hot and humid by SD standards. The course wasn't too crowded - the group in front of us played at a good pace so that we didn't have to wait too long. The fairways, rough, and tee boxes are all in good condition. The bunkers have good sand. The greens are fair but slow. Those were some slow greens on a hot day! A few greens had small patchy areas in them. Service was good. The starter got us out on time and the cart girl came by a couple of times. I would play here again.

Overall the course is in decent condition. The fairways, rough, and tee boxes are all in good condition. The bunkers have good sand but some are not well raked. The greens are fair. They roll fairly smooth but are medium/slow speed and not very consistent. A few greens had small bare areas in them. The two regulars I played with told me that the conditions have been steadily getting better over the last few months. I found the layout to be enjoyable and would play there again.

I've started to play this course a bit more, as the club I belong to is silly busy on weekend mornings. Played today, 6/30, for the second time in a month. It is a great course to walk, and so far, I've walked on as a single with no more than a 30 minute delay. Check-in is quick, although some construction through mid-July makes it a bit of an obstacle course (upstairs to pay, downstairs for starter office).

The course is an up and back canyon deal, so don't expect a huge amount of diversity of views or hole layouts, but from the blues, it's a decent test...with several 400+ yd par 4's, and a couple of 200 yd+ par 3s.

For a military course, the fairways are FANTASTIC! Greens tend to be just a little shaggy and inconsistent, but nothing that'll ruin your round. Tee areas are good. Rough is good in most places, but inconsistent. Several areas on mud/soggy from below average drainage. But heck, for a military course that you can walk very inexpensively, well worth the drive to the back gate. And a far superior value to Arrowood ($75+) 2 miles away...unless you must have more of a lush experience.

I know I just recently posted a review on this course, but this Easter weekend I had the chance to come out and play again and there were a couple things worth mentioning. First, you have to have a picture ID on you to get onto the base. Someone riding in my car didn't and we had to drive home to get it. Would be a major bummer if you lived a ways away. Second, the pace of play out here is incredible. Big plus. Third, the course generally plays longer than you think due to the wind that freakishly seems to always be into you. Lastly, I took my five year old out onto the Par 3 course they had there and it was an awesome time. Holes are 75-105 yards long with tiny greens (which are really in bad shape but it doesn't matter) and tons of elevation changes and challenges. It's $5 all day and a great addition to the practice area which has everything you need.

Whether you're just going out for a day of practice or a round of golf, I recommend Marine Memorial if you are in North County San Diego.

I played Marine Memorial for the first time on Saturday, 3/24, at 3 pm. First off, the fee was $22 to walk for twilight which is probably the best value for a golf course in the San Diego area. I checked in and was able to run directly to the first tee where I was able to play with some really nice guys. The course is mostly flat with a couple elevation changes and really is a straightforward, classic style course. The fairways were in fantastic shape, the rough was patchy in spots, but I never criticize a course on the rough considering it should be difficult if you hit there, right?

The greens were okay, my only complaint being that they were a tad bumpy and inconsistent. The grass just seemed "thick", for lack of better word. But they held really well and were healthy, just a bit slow. We played in about 3 hours and 45 minutes and I really loved the layout. Lots of large, older trees and you are really secluded on the base out in Pendleton.

They also had a solid practice area and a nine hole par 3 course. I didn't get to utilize these, but I could see it becoming a regular practice area for me as they have everything you need. I would definitely recommend people checking this course out.

Played early Sunday morning. Pace was great, didnt wait on a shot all day. Course is in good shape, the greens are firm and fast and very tricky. They had some bumps that made a few harder to putt, but very fun. Fairways in good shape and not a lot of rough. Bunkers were flawless and some of the best I have played in a while. This is an open course and fun to play, especially for 50 bucks on a Sunday. Nice that it is open to the public.

Had no played here since Jan 2007. Did not recall the course all that well, but it seemed like the condition was better than I recall. The greens were decent, but they need to be rolled! The ball kind of "drifts" and won't stay on line. They were also too slow for my taste. Otherwise the course was in decent shape. Nobody there, so played without delay. I generally have very good recollection of golf holes, but I did not remember any of the holes. I acknowledge that the holes are certainly not memorable, but the back side had enough "different" holes that I would have thought I'd rememebr some - but I didn't. Maybe if I return again in three+ years, it will be again like playing here for the first time. (Could be due to getting old?)

As much as I like this layout, fee, people, and setting, I don't see myself playing here much this year. There are 11 greens that are bumpy with all kinds of different speeds from green to green and even on the same green depending on where your ball is. There other 7 greens are slow po-anna's that at least roll true. There is no way to get a feel for good consistent distance control when putting here. I will come back once in the fall.
