This course is in decent condition most times but play is so slow that it ruins your round. The traps are hard as a rock. 95% of the time you will wait for every shot you hit during your round. Very few of us locals even play the south because of the 5-6 hour rounds. IMO you shouldn't get your hopes up when paying 200 bucks.

Overall still in great shape. Teed off a little before our tee time and pace was right about 5 hours.

Greens were rolling pretty fast, putts just seemed to keep rolling. I think they were a little faster than the practice green but I didn't get to spend a lot of time on the practice green. Greens were somewhat firm so I don't remember a significant amout of ball marks but because they were firm they didn't hold shots. I hit several shots which hit the green only to proceed to roll off the back. You basically need to land everything at the front and let it release.

Fairways were great to hit from. There were some divot damage out there some were filled in and others were not. The fairways were mowed perfectly.

While the rough has been mowed down it is certainly no push over. Ball probably sits down about half a ball which still makes for some difficulty in hitting out of it. Hitting out of this after a while makes you appreciate the fairways that much more.

The disappointment were the sand traps. There were hard and crusty. I was in several and they were all similar.

Enjoyable even on a hot day like today when it still kicks my rear.

Played yesterday with the men's club and Rat is 100% accurate. Hitting the fairway is a premium right now and I can't emphasize this enough. I hit 9 fairways and I struggled to get to the mid 80s. Similar to Rat I was just off the fairway I had about 145 yds to the hole which would normally be a 9, I hit an 8 just to be safe. I probably advanced it maybe 100 yds. We also did have a couple of guys lose their balls in the rough.

Greens rolled fabulously. They were fast and rolled very smooth. Shockingly I don't remember a lot of ball marks. Balls that seemed to have no chance to get to the hole just seemed to keep rolling.

Fairways were great as I mentioned and the rough was penalizing. Never have I wanted to hit a fairway bunker in my life but this weekend was a first for me.

Pace was slow as expected, 5 hours and 45 minutes. A lot of that time was spent looking for balls. There was only minimal waiting for the group in front.

The one disappointment were the bunkers. Several of us comment how thin they were. I was in 3 and one was thin but they were also wet for sure me reason. Since we have haven't had rain I assume this was the course but I'm not sure why it was necessary to do this.

I had my reservations whether they'd be able to get the course in condition to play the tournament but I've never been more proud to be wrong. If there was a time that it was worth playing now would be the time.

BRUTAL! With all caps! Didn't help that I wasn't hitting the fairway. Bright spot for me personally, +1 on the par three's! Par, par, birdie, double (hit my tee shot right on 16 ending up behind the grandstands, played three from the tee to 8', missed the put :(.
Tee boxes: perfect
Fairways: perfect . . . at least they looked that way, only played from them mostly after lay ups!
Rough: BRUTAL! 6 to 8 inches, thick and the ball sits down . . . best I did out of the rough was about 120 with a HARD 8 iron! Miraculously I only lost one ball and that was a push into the hazard on 6. We found our balls but it was a chore to say the least!
Bunkers: perfect . . . I was in the front bunker on the par three third and almost holed it!
Greens: perfect, FAST and slippery! I had three three putts which is unusual for me.
POP: 5 hrs, never waited, never got pushed, it was the searching that took time.
Customer service: staff was fine, but they are tearing down the grandstands etc. plus the bathrooms at the halfway house were locked? I will add that snacks and water are way overpriced!
Overall: a brutal humbling day (makes one realize how good those guys are) on a beautiful course on a beautiful day . . . beats a day at work!

Played this week twice. I only compare what this course has been for the past 30 years to today's conditions. The fairways: For as long as I can remember when you hit the fairway your ball sat like it was teed up and nearly a perfect lie. Now, it's thin, a poor lie. The rough: Even though at tournament time the rough is brutal you always had grass under the ball, now you may not, it's thin in the majority of places. The green side bunkers: Never have I seen them so hard and unplayable. If you short side yourself yer done. Your ball will be 30 feet from the hole even with a great sand shot. I have watched this course be prepared for every PGA tournament for the past 30 years plus. I guarantee that the PGA will not be happy come game time. Many blame it on the "drought". Sorry but I've lived here since 1956 and that's 100% hog wash. San Diego has a decision to make. They either keep things the way they are or go back to the maintenance crew they had during the 08 Open when this course was in primo condition 95% of every single day of the year. I love this course and I love my birthplace but I will not mince words when it comes to my home course. I want my old course back, and Candice.

Played this morning and got off right on time. Pace for the first 9 was terrible, 2 1/2 hours. Picked up on the back at 2 hours so it averaged out to the pace of play for the course.

Overall you can tell they are gearing up for the maintenance. They basically have all the rough cut down especially around the bunkers so on the plus side there isn't any penalty for hitting it in the rough.

Greens were good and probably the best part of the course right now. They seemed pretty firm to me and ran at a decent pace. Nothing too fast or too slow. Quite a few ball marks out there which is disappointing that others don't fix.

Fairways are a little rough. There are plenty of bad spots and unfilled divots. I found my share of both. Don't get me wrong it's not to say it's all over, maybe I just happened to be (un)lucky today.

Found a few bunkers and thought they were all consistent. Not overly soft and not hard panned.

Marshal was out there getting the slow groups to pick it up and it worked as we finished the back 9 at a very good pace.

Certainly not worth the nonresident rate right now and it's getting hard to make an argument for the resident rate but it's only $60. Given some of the reviews from some of the other courses it might worth considering other options.

I agree that there are certainly spots for improvement, especially considering how well this course has been maintained in the past.

But let me be frank, for the resident rate this course still plays to the level you expect. Not so for the non-resident rate, thats a rip-off.

The greens are still a 7-8, the fairways a 7, and the rough an 8. The bunkers were fine at a 7 and the tee boxes were near perfect 8-9.

It's not the best it's ever been at Torrey and I completely agree they need to get back to their old ways but seriously the course is not a 3.1. It's an overpriced muni for non-residents but for residents I think it's fine. Not the best it's been, but A LOT better than other courses in the area during this drought.

I have been playing Torrey for well over 30 years. Never have I seen this course in as poor as shape as it is now and has been for the past year. Our old greens keeper is now at another course and they brought in another guy. He's a good dude but he is cutting everything way too short and tight. The green side bunkers are unplayable due to over watering. The approach areas are falling apart from cutting the grass way too short. The fairways actually have dirt areas that I have never seen in my entire life playing here. Whatever strategy they are trying to implement is not and will not work. EVERY visitor I play with is disappointed with this course and say they won't be back. It kills me to say this about a course I call home and love but it must be said. I'm praying that whoever is calling the shots reads this and changes their strategy. I want my old course back.

Played South yesterday at twilight, 3:20 tee time, finished 18 in the dark.
As one of my playing partners, the other local with one from North Carolina and one from Oregon, said, and I agree, "I am disappointed with Torrey so far this year." It's just not in pristine shape, not even great shape. It's still Torrey with the great views, challenging holes, etc. but it's just in mediocre shape as far as Torrey goes. Just barely worth the resident rate at the moment.
Tees: fine
Fairways: mostly nice but with some dried out, bare areas and the approaches having just had maintenance were ugly.
Rough: 2" to 3" and fairly consistent and VERY grabby . . . a different grabby than Maderas, but tough to get a decent result from.
Bunkers: decent, not soft, not hard, just in-between =, at least the ones I was in.
Greens: bumpy, rolling well, slower than ideal and because of the bumpy conditions tough to make anything.
POP: a bit over 4.5
Snack cart: came by often, gave us the last call on the 10th fairway.
Overall: just not the Torrey I love at the moment.
