Got out on 12/6 at 8:30. Seems a nice guy who just got his tour card and was there to see the course had the whole spot put 3 slots back so me and a twosome joined him. Course is in very good shape with greens running fairly quick, not glass yet, fairways in good shape, rough was cut down but still an issue like always, bunkers were nice but mostly thin. CPO so pace was at 5 hrs. Postcard day on a beautiful and challenging course. It was fun watching the budding tour pro smash the ball. Great conditions right now. Get out there if you can!

Played on 11-28-23. The course has just come back from overseeding and aeration that was completed on 10-19 this year, and is in amazing condition right now. Currently carts are cart path only for the next 2 months until right after the Farmers Insurance Open. The rough has definitely been grown out and I've been told will be getting longer leading up to the tournament. The greens were in good shape, and I cannot wait to see what they look like after the tournament. Be prepared to deal with a lot of construction going on during the round, as they are already setting up the grandstands and hospitality areas for the tournament in Jan. Great weather, playing partners, and score made for a great day. I am playing again 2 days after the Farmers Insurance Open, so I cannot wait to give a review on the course right after a PGA tournament.

Played 9-12-23. This was a bucket list course for myself and my buddy. I have been fortunate to play 3 other courses that have held a US Open (the others were Riviera, LACC North, Pebble). We did not have a tee time that day, so we had to make the early morning pilgrimage to try to be the first one on the waitlist hoping to get out early. 2am we were on the way down to Torrey. We got into the parking lot at 3:45am and were the first people in the lot, we knew we were at least going to get out that day. We put our club by the door of the pro shop (this is the traditional way to reserve your space in line for the walk ups) The pro shop door opened at 5:45 and we were met by the starter. He asked which course we wanted to play. We chose the South Course. He told us that we were the 6:20am first tee time of the day and we were the rabbit setting the pace of the course for the day. We were also informed that the pin placements for the day were pin location 2, which were the hardest locations they have and the same ones used for the 2008 US Open final round. I will tell you that if you ever get a chance to be the first tee time of the day at the South Course, do it. It was magical walking the course while the sun was coming up and beautiful ocean views with no one playing in front of us. The course was in good shape. The rough was looking a little brown due to lack of watering, but the fairways and greens were in good shape. The greens were slow in the morning due to the morning dew and ocean air, but when it heated up they got some good speed, Id say around an 11. We played from the Brown tee boxes playing at 7015 in yardages. The black tees (tournament) are not even set up and are only playable by request. I asked what it would take and the starter on the first hole said, be a tour pro (course playes 7802 from those tees) The Brown tees were in good shape since most people do not play those, but the greens and whites definitely had some wear. We played the round at just under 4hrs and I went back to back birdies on 17 and 18 to shoot a 79 (made my day since this was the first time I played there) In closing, here is my view in general of the South Course. You can tell it is a city municipal course that gets alot of play. Yes the cost for non city residences is a little high $233 if you were walking. It is not a Pebble Beach quality course, and I never expected that when showing up that day. But to be able to play the same course that Tiger had his epic 2008 tournament and to be able to birdie the same hole and pin location that Tiger did on the 72nd hole to push it to a playoff, will always be a memory I cherish for the rest of my life. I'm playing here again on the 28th of November, because I want to see how I play now that I know the layout better and I can;t wait to go back.

Played 9/9 Sat, 7am shotgun, 4:30 hr round, cool, overcast, humid morning, reminds of Hawaii, not much wind, got hot the last hour or so. Course in good shape. Greens a little bumpy, running about a 10, not very fast. Rough is sticky and balls sit down a little. Bunkers are beach sandy. I've never hit into so many bunkers... Had a hard time on the greens figuring out speed: can't decide if it's me sucking, or me not figuring out the grain. What makes this course, I've decided, is not the ocean, but the canyon/gorge that the course weaves around in the middle of the course. Anyways, always a privilege to play here.

Decided to trek down to San Diego to play a bucket list course at Torrey Pines South Course. This was a 10 hour day trip from Los Angeles. Always wanted to play it because of the history and because I went to college at UC - San Diego and could of played it as a resident junior at less than $20 back in the 90's, but no......I decided to wait 25 years later......and.... Instead, decided to pay advance reservation fee $47, nonresident green fee of $232 and cart fee of $22.50. Total damage at around $300. We arrived 1 hour early for our afternoon tee time. There are two desks in the pro shop. You pay green fees at one, and cart fees at the other. Gerry, the employee there was rude, and treated our foursome like it was our 1st time on a golf course. His comments were condescending and nasty. You don't need to speak that slowly to me.....I speak perfect English. He made another guest/customer in our group repeat to him where the location of the golf carts where. We are not 5 years old....you idiot! Gerry....I nominate you to the "failed customer service hall of fame". I witness other interactions with him and other patrons and it was the same non-sense. Keep in mind, if you do not check in at least 15 minutes before your tee time, they will cancel your spot and put you on the waiting list. We had lunch beforehand at the grill. The hostess would not let us sit outside and said all the tables were reserved. After our 45 minute lunch, less than 25% were occupied. Again.....classy service. The course is a muni, a very famous one because Tiger won an epic open here and many Farmer's tournaments. The layout is a little boring. The ocean views and history are the only reason why this place is famous. Greens were running at 9.5. Tee Boxes were chewed up. Rough was patchy and sand traps were bare. Come on guys...reinvest in your course.....throughout the year...and not the 3 months before the Farmer's Open is in town. POP was 4.5 hours. Bathrooms were atrocious, dirty and unkept. I will not return. It is worth every penny the resident rate, but non-residents, spend your money elsewhere after you check this off your bucket list like me. I did par 18....missed birdie putt on the low side...

Rough is short, greens are terrific, and you will never experience more fried egg lies than in the bunkers on TP South. Balls that hit the side walls of the bunker are offense totally buried. This is off because some bunkers have grass growing thru the bottom, yet there is tons of sand on the sides of the bunkers. Pace of play was typical—i.e., slow.

1st time here, absolutely amazing conditions, incredibly challenging and fun. By far the best muni I’ve played, can’t believe a U.S. Open course is city owned and in great shape like this

Played the South in a bit of rain on the 12th with my new golf buddy, Kuan. Second off as a twosome with a twosome in front. Pretty sure I've never written that in my life. Played the first three in a light rain, then it cleared until 11. Course staff were fantastic and apparently anticipated the rain. Huge tents were erected all over the course -- they might have overdone it a bit -- to keep dry under during a downpour. Waited under one after our teeshots on 11 as about 1/2 inch fell in 20 minutes, the last rain we encountered. Course was in very good condition. Tees were mostly up, but all the boxes looked well covered and green. Fairways were understandably a little soggy with lots of green grass. Rough was not nearly as long as the website cautioned. Didn't lose a ball despite limited visiblity (rain and age). Sandtraps had beautiful sand, hard and packed on the floor of traps but loose and sticky on the walls due to rain. Several balls plugged into the side. The fringe could use a little filling in on a couple of holes. The greens still showed signs of being verticut, but roll was true and quick, sometimes treacherous even with the wet. I haven't played here in a while. This is the first time I've thought, "OK, I can see paying over $200 to play here if you are not a resident." The added traps and elevated greens and elevated conditions, at least for the tournament, made this a very fun day of golf.
I'm praying for another rainy day. Hope they leave the tents up, they'd be a great place to watch the Farmers from!!
