Played Saturday 6/8 with time before 8am. Teed off right on time, and we had no one behind us for most of the round; our overall pace was 4:15. Conditions overall were very good to excellent. The greens were medium speed but rolled very true. Tee boxes were in excellent shape. Bunkers were good, except for too many unraked areas from prior inconsiderate $#@% players. Fairways were in good shape, and the rough was just right - just tall enough to be troublesome, but short enough to be able to find the ball fairly easily.

Played Torrey South on 5/29. I did not have a tee time and just walked up as a single and the course was fairly empty, so I was able to get on the tee box almost immediately. POP was 4 hours. $61 rack rate for SD Resident on a Weekday is unbeatable for this course. The course was in great condition. I always enjoy walking this side because of all the great views you get to the West.

Tees: They were good. No bare spots.
Fairways: Fairways were lush and I didn't see any bare spots. Still was able to get tons of roll out even with the fairways being lush.
Rough: Around 4".
Greens: They were soft for the most part. The North greens seemed firmer just a few days before that.
Sand Traps: For the most part, they were good. A few of them looked like they had just been watered.

The cart girl came around about 8 times I would say. Customer service is always great here.

Played in the Men's Club event today. I was surprised and glad to see that the course has come back from maintenance last month, and was in great shape!

The greens have healed from punching and were soft but pretty quick. I liked the speeds but they were still a little bumpy, and as a result, no birdies in our group. Mostly pars and bogies.

The rest of the course was first class. Lush fairways, tees and rough, and the rough was cut down and playable.

As usual on the South, we all spent a lot of time in the sand. But, thank goodness, the bunkers were prepared as good as it gets in San Diego. What a pleasure to play bunkers like the pros find them!

Give the greens a couple more weeks, and Torrey South should be back to one of the top five in San Diego.

Played at Torrey for the first time this morning. Went through the whole dawn patrol "walk up" experience as a single. Got there around 5am, put my bag in line and was teeing off at 7am in the third group out on South. Pace just under 4.5 hours as a walking foursome. I agree the $183 non-resident rate is ridiculous and would love if they at least had an intermediate SCGA member rate or something in between that and the resident rate for other SoCal folks. But since this was my 300th course played, I was able to justify the one-time splurge in my mind as a "special occasion." In a way, it reminded me of courses like Harding Park or Cog Hill in the way it caters to locals and offers scaled down muni service, but still capitalizes on national notability to charge "bucket list" rates to out-of-towners. I paid hefty prices to play both of those courses while on vacation and I know I will someday when I try to play Bethpage, so I just viewed Torrey kind of the same way. I'm glad I didn't let the last review scare me away. I think he was being extra nit-picky as a regular player here. I thought the conditions were fantastic today and rivaled that of many high-end courses I've played (many of which charge even more). Greens were just about perfect. Fairways were great. Kikuyu rough was thick, sticky and wore me out all day. Bunkers very soft so the ball might plug a bit, but the sand itself was excellent to hit from. Tee boxes beautifully manicured. I struggled keeping the ball in the fairway because I have a fade swing and most every fairway here is very narrow and slopes drastically to the right. It was frustrating, but most times found the intermediate cut which was nice and fluffy. The deeper cut was brutal (especially around the greens) and I can only imagine what it's like when big tournaments are there. It was very foggy this morning, so some of the more scenic holes on the front nine were obscured and that was a little disappointing, though I love playing a great course in early morning fog. The 18th is very underwhelming design in person, but I walked off on a positive note with an easy birdie. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience on South once I put the price out of my head. I wish I could play here once or twice a year, but I just won't unless I get a reasonable deal. Too bad.

Torrey South is one of my favorite tracks in San Diego. So I'm probably more critical of the conditions than most courses.

I'm confounded over how the conditions quickly detiorate between tournaments. Just after The Farmers, it was great! Now, only six weeks later, it's pathetic. At least compared to other area courses right now.

Especially the greens and bunkers. The greens were slow, soft and bumpy, with many ball marks. Meanwhile other area courses are fast and true. And the bunkers no longer have that tournament base and firmness. As a result they were tracked up and lumpy.

I can't believe that non-city residents will be happy paying the inflated rates for Torrey South in these conditions. It's even a stretch for City rates.

I do hope that other Greenskeeper members post their experiences regularly so that we can take advantage of their reports and play Torrey when it is in good condition. When it's good, it's really good!

Course was packed! Welcome to Sunday morning golf, seemed like everyone in SD county area wanted to play here. The NORTH course visually was crowded too as we watched several golfers play from the BLUE's even though we all know they should be playing the more forward tees on the NORTH.

Back to the South Course & Conditions:

ALL of the grandstands from the PGA event are gone & removed from the golf course. All you will see are the regular ground crew maintenance workers keeping the current conditions as best as they can...

ROUGH: 1 1/2" - 2" at best. Making the players appreciate the NON-penal conditions (Take that excuse out of the pile you hear when playing the SOUTH).

FAIRWAYS: Excellent conditions, 1st and 2nd cut are clearly defined even though the rough is a max 2". The maintenance staff does a very good job of repairing previous divots, unfortunately the players are not. :(

GREENS: Pace (speed of the green) much faster than expected but rolled true for the most part. Since our group tee'd off mid morning, did not experience any abnormalities of the surface.

TEE BOXES: Normal wear, but a little more on the exposed PAR 3's

BUNKERS: Perfect conditions, soft - fluffy sand but NOT too fluffy. Green side or even the fairway bunkers.

CUST SVC: The cart girls came by 3-4 times to check on the players. Cart barn attendant staff always polite & friendly.

Parking? Because of BOTH courses being so busy, all spots were filled, alternate street parking was being used.

LAYOUT: It's the SOUTH and it's tougher than what the average player thinks it is no matter which tee boxes you are playing.

Pace of play was an issue (weekend golf), each hole had groups playing average pace. At one point, our group as a whole was behind by about two shots, the players noticed, made up the time and caught the group in front of us. When players are putting & counting each & every stroke, those 8's & 9's are just that much longer to endure....Is is what it is...

Played at 12:00 yesterday (Wednesday), finished at 5pm. We were the last group out but took our time mainly because we were trying to find each other's balls in the rough.

Played at 12:00 yesterday (Wednesday), finished at 5pm. We were the last group out but took our time mainly because we were trying to find each other's balls in the rough.

Grandstands are all up. I played as a single for 60 bucks, and didn't wait to get on. Great value.

Conditions are about as good they get now. Lots of new grass planted around the greens for the PGA event. Only gripe is that the greens hadn't been rolled for a few days and seemed slowish. Sure that will change soon.

Still hunting my first hole in one...

I played on Saturday just before noon and was happy to find the course in very good conditions overall. Most of the tee boxes were excellent and the fairways were equally as good. The bunkers that I happened to be in, which were many, had good coverage and the sand in the greenside bunkers was soft....leading to a number of plugged lies. The greens were receptive and had a few bumps on them but were rolling true. The rough must've been cut recently because it wasn't too deep and definitely manageable. We saw the cart girl several times throughout the round. The pace of play was to be expected for a weekend round with a 5 hour and 15 min round. Get out there and play....conditions should only get better with the tourney coming up.

Couldn't resist another after work session at Torrey. Got on at 12:00 and finished at 5:00.

Couldn't resist another after work session at Torrey. Got on at 12:00 and finished at 5:00.

Greens have improved a lot from a couple of weeks ago. They are no longer sandy and running medium fast. Everything else is as you would expect at this time of the year i- perfect fairways, tricky rough (seems to be a little less wild and wooly) and great bunkers.

Grandstands are now up for the Farmers. 60 bucks (resident) is mega value for the conditions right now.
