Just a quick update from my post last weekend. Played yesterday and everything was the same except it looks like they punched the greens with the really small holes and sanded the greens. The holes have already grown back in but you can see where this was done. I'm not sure they did this on the entire green either. They they were slower and a little more bumpier. Everything was the same.

Played in the men's club tournament this past Sunday. There were some previous comments about the greens so I was a little scared but I'd say these greens were fantastic. These greens were really firm and fast. I learned the hard way that there is no landing the ball at the pin because it was going to roll well past. An example is on hole 1 the pin was in the front and I had a 30 yard chip. My ball hit on the fringe and probably rolled another 20 or 30 feet past. I hit it exactly where I wanted too. I did see a couple of greens where there was small damage but the pins weren't close to these areas. It has been a while since I remember the greens being this good. The fairways were great (I did find a divot on the 2nd shot of hole 13). The rough was good too. It wasn't ridiculously long but punishing enough that you better think twice about what you're going to hit out of there. I was in 6 bunkers and only one of them was thin, the others were fine. We played in about 5 hours but we are a little slow out there. I liked the conditions of the course so much I'm going back again this weekend. Have to take advantage before Beau comes down and tears this course apart for the Junior Worlds.

PACE of PLAY: Walking 4 Hours 10 mins (18 holes).

One player reached the PAR 5 18th in TWO, just missed eagle putt from 40 feet, tap in birdie = PRICELE$$ (NO Kyle Stanley)

Our group went out on the (SOUTH) for an afternoon walk in the park.

The Marshal said we picked the correct course to play, heard the NORTH had a little ol' tournament & it was taking 4 1/2 hours JUST to play 12 HOLES! eeks...

I hope my rating reflects the current conditions:

Bunkers: much improved from the last time I was here, TODAY, majority of the bunkers seemed to be "fluffed", very consistent, players able to take a nice divot and SPIN the ball! Unfortunately, LAZY people still exist & FORGET to rake the bunkers (Not sand traps).

Fairways: Overall very good conditions, not too many divots but they are there. Most lies the golf balls are sitting up, very consistent.

Tee Boxes: Considering how much play this course gets, not too bad including the par 3's. It really helps having brown boxes filled with sand on the PAR 3's, wish more people would notice "how to use them".

Rough: has been cut down, you still know where the fairways are, secondary cut is about an inch with the rough just about 2 - 2 1/2"

Greens: Plenty of multiple green colors, greens are soft, holding shots..not so bad? Well, putting on the surface a different situation..
Very bumpy, putts not holding their line like you would expect, several putts basically "snaked" their way along the surface. If you hit the putt from the same point, each time it would react totally different from the other 3-4 practice putts. Hole #12 Very long PAR 4, previous poster mentioned "WASHBOARD" effect is about as accurate it can be. It was like tiny little ridges or waves inside each grain of the green. Noticed this on a couple holes on the back nine. Was told the greens were in better condition just a little over a week ago.

One other note, the players were looking forward to seeing the hang gliders flying high above...don't know if they were grounded due to the higher winds? I'm not an expert on hang gliding.

Cust Service: Guys in the Cart barn are great, Starter always lets people KNOW pace of play is extremely important..somehow the MEMO was lost on the (NORTH), We heeded this on the SOUTH, made the turn in 2 hrs 5 mins on a weekend.

IF this is your first time playing Torrey Pines, best to allow extra time to get to the practice range.

I was really looking forward to playing the South Course today, after finding the North Course in such great shape a couple of weeks ago. Since The South is one of my favorite courses, I had very high expectations.

But I was very disappointed.

The course was not in good shape. Especially the greens. They were soft and bumpy, and even had a "washboard" texture on some greens. The usually "great" bunkers were very inconsistent, ranging from no sand, to wet sand, to heavy sand. And they were tracked up by both golfers and workers. And the rough, which was cut to a playable length, was burned out in some areas and had many bare spots and inconsistent grass textures.

This was definitely not the same course, condition wise, that I had just played a couple of months ago. And meanwhile, the North Course, and many of the other local public courses are in great shape.

I had a chance to get out on the course just prior to the maintenance scheduled and was pleasantly surprised to see how well conditioned the course was. Awhile back, I used to feel that the quality of the maintenance of the course did not match the out of town rates and the course didn't represent well for visitors.....not that I really care that much since I'm a city resident. :) Anyways, I felt that all aspects of the course was lush and beautiful. The lone complaint might be the consistency of the rough. I felt that in some spots, it was lush and fairly penalizing while in other areas, it wasn't bad at all. On that day, the weather was beautiful, the cart girl came around several times, and the pace of play was exceptional! Playing Torrey South, it made me remember why I love living in San Diego.

Played Friday morning. Course is in great shape. Very lush. One of the few courses I play in San Diego that has penalizing rough. Long course with fast greens which will challenge anyone. Greens could have been a little smoother, but maybe that was partly due to the type of grass here. If you can qualify as a resident, you need to play this course. Greens fee is extremely worth it. As a visitor, the rate is pretty high, but still worth at least one round.

UGH...This course can be a bear. And not a black bear, a grizzly. Rough is still up from Farmers Open (not all the way but longer than usual). Greens are rolling great. Bunkers are perfect. Fairways are lush. Course is in great shape. If you have a resident card get out there. Played back tees (I was the high in the group) and realized #12 is sooo long...477 par 4 dead into the wind. Such a great course.

I played in the public shotgun yesterday after the Mens Club Tournament. The course looked spectacular!

I played in the public shotgun yesterday after the Mens Club Tournament. The course looked spectacular!

But, It was a week after the Farmers and the rough had not been cut at all since then. So the course played very hard and we lost several balls in the rough. The bunkers were wet and thick and, the greens were soft and a little bumpy. It was tough to make birdies, but not hard to make double bogeys!

I really like playing the South course, but I'm going to have to wait until they cut the rough back down before playing it again. Hopefully this week.
