Wrote a prior review of the course and thought I would not return. but tried it again. Pace of play remains a major problem. Slow play and time spent standing around does little to provide value that normally would be associated with a course like this with green fees in this range. Played my last round here today. GPS did not work and on course assistant could not get it to work.

Agree with all of zachary's comments - front nine was pretty plain but back nine much more interesting with more elevation change, holes played through corridors of large oaks, greens with more movement. Almost like two different people designed the nines. Friendly staff and OK facilities, although marshalls were NTBF. Better choices in terms of conditioning and interest in the area. I didn't rate the course because of the recent rains - course has some obvious drainage issues.

Played on Sunday the 2nd with dconnally and weber 2323. Course is still wet from the rains in certain area's, mostly on the back 9. The greens were rolling true and were pretty firm considering all of the rain we have gotten but a few had lots of ball marks. The sand was in good shape. The fairways were the major problem with the course-very patchy. Cart girl was around multiple times and the we finished the round just as the rain started. Fun track and worth 40 bucks on a Sunday. A few better conditioned tracks in San Diego for the price though.

Played it four times over the past three weeks and it is S-L-O-W play. The fastest round was 4.75 hours. Slowest...a tad over 5.5 hours! Whoa. A wait on every tee!

The greens are somewhat chewed up. Somewhat soft...and you can see footprints. What is worse are the holes. Seems like the patrons are digging their balls out of the holes with their putters. Many holes don't have edges...and the others in my foursome was digging with putters. Group ahead...digging with putters too. On all four recent rounds I have seen this...so it appears the patrons are adopting the method of digging in the holes.

The tee boxes are not too level. The fairways are somewhat worn and with divots.

Again...the slow play is the worse part.

Played here for the first time in almost two years after reading a couple of encouraging reviews that were posted on Greenskeeper.org this past month. I was pleased with what I saw for the first few holes but then encountered areas of thin, patchy fairways that continued into the back nine. Some fairways are in very good condition while others seem to be struggling, which is a problem I've observed here in the past. I tend to believe it's a turf/soil problem rather than the result of a lack of attention, although roping these areas off might be necessary in order to promote some re-growth. Confining the golf carts to the cart paths may also have to be considered.

The greens, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, bear the battle scars of unrepaired ball marks, which can be directly attributed to negligent golfers. This is a recurring theme on many of the courses I play and read about yet I'm simply amazed at the total disregard exhibited by those who should know better. It only adds to the facility's maintenance costs and, in some cases, can potentially be responsible for a loss of revenue once word gets around that the greens are in a damaged state and not much fun to putt on.

That being said, the sections of the greens that were not pock-marked rolled smooth and true at a medium pace. If you're willing to repair a few ball marks that may be in your intended putting route, you'll be rewarded with a putt that will remain on its' line. Well-struck shots held yet some greens were a bit firmer than others so not every shot stopped on the proverbial dime. The only green that's not in the best shape is the roller-coaster 11th, where some areas of dirt are showing rather than grass. There was evidence of similar damage on #10 also.

Tee boxes were in good shape and fairly level; no real issues to report here. Some new tees have been constructed since my last visit which has resulted in an additional 165 yards being added to the tips. Holes 1-4-8-10-14-15-16-17 all show distance gains compared to the old scorecard from 2007 while the 485-yard Par 5 11th has been "shortened" to a 447-yard Par 4. Factor in the previously mentioned diabolical green and it makes "4" a score to be proud of.

Spent very little time in the rough; found it to be full and consistent, although a bit on the shortish side at 1"-2". Loved the powder-white sand in the greenside bunkers; felt as if I was hitting out of talcum powder. Really adds some visual punch against the green grass. Fairway bunkers seem to be composed of the usual heavy stuff we're used to seeing in Southern California.

Pace of play for our foursome was perfect; 12:45pm tee time start with a 5:15pm finish. Cart girl was seen three or four times during the round and the on-course marshall couldn't have had an easier day. Grass tee was open on the practice range and the turf was in great shape; same can be said for the putting green. Facilities are still spartan but the staff is cordial and they keep the place clean.

Despite the criticism of the greens...and keep in mind that it was the visual impact of the old ball marks that caught my attention...I still enjoyed playing Woods Valley. The layout offers a good variety of holes, the two nines are distinctly different, and the new tee boxes have upped the challenge on a course that needed some additional length. It may be a bit off the beaten path but is a venue that can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. Factor in a $20.99 rate via click4teetimes.com and you'd be hard pressed to find a better value on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

This is one of my favorities in San Diego county. I love the flavor of the two distinct nines. If you can get by on holes 10, 11, and 14 without much damage you have done well. It takes a while for ball marks to heal on the greens but the ball rolls true out here. I finally figured out that driver is not needed on 18. There is just too much trouble on both sides of the fairway. I like the cozy atmosphere here. Rounds don't take that long and people will let you play through. I told my wife about all the different bird houses you see in various locations on the golf course and now she wants to play here.

This is the 2nd time we've been to the course and it only gets better. The greens are healed from their punching so they're much better. There are a few fairways they're working on regarding irrigation issues so they can be mushy in the middle but not many. The pace of play is great. Nobody was in front of us until the 15th tee and then it went rather fast.

The front plays totally diffferent from the back. We really enjoy the back as it is scenic in addition to challenging. You can shoot a good score on the back if you keep the ball where it needs to be.

GPS would be nice, but not necessary. Cart person was round which makes it nice. Food at the "grill" was very good. Clubhouse not fancy but does it's job. Driving range is okay.

For the price weekends $50, weekdays ($30), well worth the price. We spend the night in Escondito and then play the next day, but you could also stay in Temecula and drive in on Castle Creek/Lilac road.

Great course. Hope they can keep it in the shape its in.

Played 6/13 tee times 0646/0653. This course is always a joy to play and with the work they have been doing to improve it makes it even better. The addition of tee boxes, new cart paths and improvement of sand quality are just some of the areas that have been improved. This is an exacting course that has A LOT of trouble on every hole, but accurate play can be very rewarding. Expect to lose a few balls and get upset at some of the dastardly pin placements, and, if you played well, also expect to feel satisfaction with the level of challenge this course hands out. Make sure you call the course to find out about maintenance as the greens had just been punched the week before and we had no one tell us when we made the reservation, in the Pro Shop when we paid or by the starter on the first tee.

Tournament play on Sunday, May 16th. Course was in great condition; bent grass greens rolled excellent, although they looked much faster. Pace of play was great(other than our slower club members). Food was good if you wanted to wait. Perhaps the Junior League sandwiches took their toll. Cart service on the course made the rounds, so liquids were a plenty. Greens are being punched this week and next, so wait for things to heal up. Out.
