HORRIBLE PACE OF PLAY. Should be done in 90 minutes tops.

Four hours (YES 4 HOURS) for this very very short executive course on a Saturday morning.
This is not acceptable. Everyone is taking mulligans, no marshal.

The price is outrageous for what it is, on top of it.

Too bad. This would be a nice place to practice but is basically hell on earth. Welcome to mismanaged golf.

My last San Diego County "Short Course Blitz" today started at Mission Bay. I was able to book a 6:52 time as a single the day before, but there were only a handful of early birds out for dawn patrol. I ended up third off behind two other singles who moved quickly and I joined with another single for a little more relaxed pace. Nobody ever pushed from behind and we finished in around 2 hours. $29 early morning non-resident walking rate still felt a little bit steep.

I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the course, especially in winter. It was very nice throughout. Some tee boxes were a bit beat up, but never too bad. The fairway areas had a mix of grasses (primarily kikuyu with some patches of bermuda), but were cut consistently and I almost always had nice lies. Rough not much of a factor, but mostly OK. The greens were firm and fairly fast, rolling smooth and true. Very nice greens overall. I think there are only a couple bunkers on the course and I was not in one, so no comments there.

Pretty basic and mostly easy layout with 4 really short par-4s and mostly short par-3s. The quick greens provided a little challenge, but it was still a good confidence boost. This is a fun locals' course kept in pretty solid condition, and they have lights at night, so not a bad little place to knock the ball around.

Played this executive course for the first time, going off around 3:30pm on a Wednesday. I liked that they have both a grass side and a mat side to their range, with no price difference, the only caveat being that the grass side was irons only. I noticed that the putting green was in a tree-lined, very shady area, and I wondered if they had a hard time keeping that practice green from being too soft. Joined up with a friendly threesome for a nice walk. As other reviewers have noted, the greens were punched a couple of weeks ago. It was very noticeable on the front nine, where they were rolling very slowly, and at times were a bit bumpy. The back nine greens were quicker, rolling at a medium speed (perhaps the back nine was punched first?). It's a flat, very walk-able track. The threesome told me that they play here year-round, because they can always get in 18 holes with a twilight start since the course is lit at night. Only during the summer do they venture to Torrey Pines or Balboa to play at twilight. Many of the tees had a slight side-hill slant to them, so it would take me a few moments to find a flat spot. There were very few bunkers on the course. I only recall a couple fairway bunkers on the 7th hole, the par-4 265 yard hole that runs next to Mission Bay Blvd. It was very pleasant weather with a slight breeze, and I enjoyed myself out there. Total time for walking the 18 holes was 2 hrs and 50 minutes. The staff was pleasant, and the friendly bartender looked like she had regulars that were visiting her after their rounds. I'd like to go back after a week or two and play this course when the greens are back to the condition that reviewers rave about.

I played again today for the first time since the winter and just to update that review- The greens are still the best part about this course. It's obviously dried out this summer but the course has stayed in pretty good shape regardless. The greens still hold shots and roll true. The rest follows my previous review.

The greens here are pretty awesome. For a 18 hole executive muni they are in tip-top shape. Well struck shots held up nicely and I was impressed with the rough around the holes. The tee boxes and little fairway were decent but nothing to write home about but hot d%mn those greens are solid. Apparently they have lights and are open at night. Excellent. Longest hole is 290 with a couple 250's in there. Great place to work on you 150 and in game.

Not exactly a "course" review per say, but just a comment about their customer service. I never use to concern myself much with customer service, as I'm there to play not get pampered. But now, as GK has introduced me to the joy of hunting down discount prices at better courses (again thank you Johnny!) and now know what kinda service you get at said courses. I see the value of good customer service. The feeling of actually being "valued" as a customer! I don't get that at "The Bay". I like to hit balls there because of being able to hit from grass (although the low flight balls don't show you much), and still will on occasion, BUT. Rude, snotty and pre-occupied is no way treat customers!
The last two times I have been there to hit balls, besides the attitude I get, they have sold me balls (always a large at least) and then 20 minutes later I hear over the loud speaker that the range will close early in 30 minutes! I don't go there to rush through the bucket . . . I usually am working on something. Then when I ask them what's up selling me a large bucket with out any warning that their usual shut down at 8pm will now be at 7, I get more attitude and oh well, "hit'em in the chipping area."

Like I said I will be back, but they need to get over themselves and at least try to be professional about their job! . . . and if you hate that one find another! If anyone involved with Mission Bay is reading this you may want to pass this along.

Played on 7-16-2013, walking on as a single about 9am. It is a short exec course with mostly par 3 holes, so don't expect this to be a deeply challenging golf experience. But it is great for a fairly quick round and some good iron and putting practice.

The course is in very nice condition. Tee boxes are OK but a bit chewed up as seems many players don't use the convenient divot mix. Fairways were nice a green, and although there are only a few par 4 holes (so one isn't in a fairway much here) the lies were very nice. Rough is fairly thick and lush. Greens are really excellent: very receptive to approach shots, are fairly fast, and roll very true. They really are some of the better greens in the county.

This executive course is in very good condition. Green are very good shape. Nice easy walking.
