Played in the Ventura City Championship Sat 5/31. Greens were firm and QUICK, better avoid the rough, it's thick and probably a 1/2 shot penalty, forget hitting more than a short iron out of most lies in the rough. The tees are immaculate and the fairways are improving. Several of the fairways that were thin have been resodded with bermuda? grass. For the modest green fee & considering the amount of play this place gets, Buena is an exceptional bargain and with it's uniqueness and condition.

Out early Sunday 25th flight tourney. For how much play this course gets, holding up pretty well. Ironically, the trouble spots for BV are now in reverse: the greens are absolutely hammered; the fairways and rough are 6+.
More sections of fairway have been converted from rye: [6/10/12/13/16]. Looks like Bermuda? The greens ran very bumpy and slow.
Warning for any GKer’s playing the Ventura City this weekend: stay out of the rough. It’s real and will grab your club shut if you overplay the lie. Last year some college kid shot 66 at BV- I’ll be very interested to see what the low score is this year.
Happy with the choice to play tourneys at BV this year- pleasant environment, people and customer service. And when the course moves into tournament mode, again proves that yardage is not the only way to keep scores up.

This course is shaping up nicely. The greens are recovering nicely from aereation. Still not as smooth or fast as they were in Mid april, but improving. They have moved down the rough around the bunkers and I suspect they likely will not move these areas again until after the Ventura City championships Memorial weekend. The primary and secondary rough is thick and deep. If you get a poor lie, anything more than a wedge could be an adventure. Their tees have grown fuller and are now very lush on most holes. Quirkly little course with tons of trees, many well placed traps and enough water and OB to keep you honest.

Played Sunday afternoon, our 3some walked in around 4 hours. Course was in decent shape, fairways coming around and the rough is getting thick....better watch carefully where the ball goes or it's a 5 minute search. Better yet, plain stay out of it, because anything but a short iron is tough to advance decently. The greens looked nice after being about a month past aereation, but were wooly, easily the slowest I have ever seen them @ Buena. Kinda like you haven't been with your lady in a month and she missed all her bikini wax appointments since your last visit........

Played twi-light Sunday 4/27. Greens still showing signs of being punched 3 weeks ago. They will need at least 2 weeks to heal. Please fix your ballmarks and other marks that you see on the green...this will make the round more enjoyable for everyone. Fairways are improving at Buena...new grass growing in on several holes..still some dirt or hard patches here or there but overall in good shape and improving. Tee boxes in decent to good shape...lots of good quality sand in bunkers..some real soft sand. OK lets talk about the rough....I have played here for years and I have not seen the rough this long in spots. A real true test if you miss the fairways. If they keep the rough up like this the course can take more of a bite out of you. I kind of like this as it does not allow you to just bomb the ball everywhere and chip and score. I had several short par 4 holes where I was close to the green in 1 shot and struggled to make par because of the rough...awesome stuff. Staff was friendly as usual. We walked the course in 4 hours 10 minutes for a Sunday which is decent for a shorter course. Met a nice GK'er along the way that hits the ball as straight as an arrow(YW for the plug Troy)...lol


I think this will be a beautiful setting for the City Championships in a month with the greens healing, fairways improving and the rough being up.

Out Sunday 27th early, 4-man tourney. Course seems to have 'found itself' with much more consistent conditions on the fairways. For me, this was the key lacking element since the rye grass/salt earth debacle surfaced. Greens, sand, tee boxes are fine- although the greens [as others have noted] are healing- probably need another 10-14 days but previously, were running pure. Layout is fun and challenging, esp when the wind comes up. Try to land your approaches in the correct quandrant or a 3-putt awaits...big yardage is not the only way to protect a course...

Played Buenaventura today at 3:30. Was one of the most relaxing and fun days of golf I've had in a long while. I played by myself and I was behind a single and he was behind a twosome. The pace was outstanding. I didn't have a wait til hole 16 and I finished at 6:35. Yep 3 hours and 5 minutes. I wasn't hustling, just paying a nice comfortable and steady pace. A few of my recent rounds were pretty slow an that usually has a negative impact on my scores so it was refreshing to play at steady pace. Allowed me to get in a rhythm with my driver and hit 11 of 13 fairways. The greens were recently punched and sanded and they are still recovering. I shot an 80, but had 40 putts. If you are looking for prime greens the course is probably 2-3 weeks away from peek green performance. The rough was as long as I've seen it and I was glad I stayed out of it for the most part. There are some bare spots on several fairways, which I find odd. Great green grass over 95% of the course and 5%, mostly fairways, hardpan...nothing in between. Overall it was the best $14 bucks I've spent in a long time. The 19th hole has a $6 hot dog, drink and snack deal I recommend at the turn.

Played twi-light 3/29. Course is in good shape for Buena. Fairways are growing in nicely on #1, #6, #7. Fairways were alot greener than I am used to here. Greens were in good shape. People please fix your ballmarks on these greens..they are the type of greens that can get messed up quickly if people are not taking care of them. Friendly staff inside the pro-shop. Give Buena a try.
