Golf Course Reviews
Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii!Played this afternoon 2/10/2014 at 1pm with my buddies Mack and Pedro from the blue tees..One of Pedro's buddies flaked at the last minute and we were joined by a nice single and another GKer's Golfmusician who joined us from the waiting list!. Roger it was nice to see you again.
The greens(8/10) were very nice-fast and firm and rolling probably close to a 10 or 10.5 on the stimp. The pin locations were challenging today with a couple on ridges and tucked close to the front and back edges. I appreciated the challenge but can add a few strokes to the card.
The tees were in awesome shape(8.5/10) and were green and lush from what looked like a very successful over seed. Only a couple par 3 tees were not level like the blue stone on number 17---but that's nit picking---great shape overall.
The fairways(6/10) still need water and work like most courses in this area. Some patches of green but pretty much dormant brown grass and thin lies. Lots of roll on drives.
Rough (6/10) Its patchy in most parts around the fairways
Fringes (7/10) Are semi-firm and provide some roll out---some of the fringes though can be soft and when chipping I like to walk on them with the soft spikes before chipping.
Friendly staff today and POP walking was 4 hours 30 minutes. Had a great front nine today and a pitiful back nine. Always enjoy the scenery, peace and quiet and layout that this course provides.

Played this morning with buddies teeing off just after 9am. Used the GK coupon for 20 bucks one of the best deals in the county for morning golf. RiverRidge for this time of year is in great shape. The greens were the highlight of the course running smooth and quick probably close to a 10.5 or 11 on the stimp. They were holding irons perfectly and are such a treat to play. The tee boxes were level and semi-lush and in good shape. The fairways are semi-firm and are mostly dormant with a lot of roll. The rough was cut down about an inch or so lining the fairways and was green and lush and in good shape. The bunkers were damp with thick sand and were in good shape. The layout here is strong and very enjoyable. River Ridge Lakes is one of my favorite courses in the county. Highly recommended.
Played Westlake yesterday 1/31/2014 at 12 noon with buddies and greenskeeper members Pedro7170, Steve and RGM2525. Westlake is short tree lined course to work on your short irons and wedges. Probably can hit 3 wood here off most tees. Conditions were as follows. Greens were super soft and held irons like darts. Some ball marks to fix but not to many. Greens looked decent when walking on them but putts contained some bounce to them. Overall not to bad. The fairways are a mix of dormant brown grass like most courses right now. They contained a few patches of green grass. The tees were semi-lush but many tees were in a position today where they were un-level. It looks like at present time the course is rotating most of its tees to let some sod grow in different places. Was not in any bunkers but it looked from my playing partners that they were semi-firm with just enough sand to get out of. There is a GK coupon that GK members can use that is $19 bucks to walk anytime during the week. Very friendly staff here and a big driving range. This is a nice course to play if you are pressed for time possibly during the week as it is a shorter course. Thanks Westlake for an enjoyable day.
Tee Time: 12 noon 1/11/2014 POP was 4hrs 15 minutes playing behind a junior tournament---27 bucks to walk which is their twilight rate on the weekends. Played with buddy Pedro7170
Tees: Black
Weather: 10mph wind and probably 65 degree tee off weather
Greens: 7.5/10 They were baked and were hard and quick. You did not want to miss irons and short side yourself with chips today. They putted fairly true---some greens had some afternoon bounce to them. They held irons somewhat with spin
Fairways 6/10 Probably the most hardpan and dormant I have ever seen the fairways here. I last played here 4-5 months ago and I remember them being nice and lush in the summer. Not the case at present time.
Bunkers 8/10 Super fluffy nice beach sand. Players in front were lazy and not raking them. We had 3 fried egg buried lies the sand was so soft. Very good shape though.
Tees: 6/10 Many tees here are un-level, some tees are worn out.
Overall: Had not played it since September and my buddy and I wanted to try it out for a change. I will probably wait until the spring-summer to venture out here again. Conditions are not up to usual par here now.

Tee Time: 12:08pm Monday 1/6/2013. POP 4 hours walking. Price $18.00 bucks.
Weather: 77 degrees with no wind
Tees: Orange
Greens: 8/10 Highlight of the course. Fast and semi-firm. Hardly any bounce on putts. Holding irons nicely. Stay below the pin hole on this course at all costs.
Tees 7/10 Decent lush grass on the par 3's. Mostly all tees level. Some seed growing in. Pretty good shape.
Fairways 6/10 Winter roll, some hardpan spots and some spots of lush grass.
Bunkers: Was in right fairway bunker on number 2 which was raked with medium thickness.
I have seen the fairways in better shape but the greens were nice and for 18 bucks and the weather you can't beat it. Its a hidden gem when its windy in Ventura County

Have not played my home course in 6-7 weeks. Walked the blues today 12/30/2013 in perfect weather. POP was 5 hrs 10 minutes. Finished with about 10-15 minutes to spare. Ton of people on the course today. The greens here are in great shape. Kudos to the staff. Rolling probably a 10.5 on the stimp with downhill putts even faster. The fringes are also in very good shape. The tees are above average with just enough coverage and are level. The fairways are very thin and dormant with patches of green here and there. You get a ton of roll at present time. The pro-shop staff was nice considering the amount of hustle and bustle with a ton of players today. I will be back again soon as I love the condition that they have the greens in.
Tee Time: 12:02pm let out a little early at 11:45am. Played with GK member RGM2525. We paid $20.00 bucks thanks to the GK coupon.
Tees: Tips
Weather: 10 mph wind to start the round-died down some on back nine. 75 degree tee off awesome weather.
Greens: 8/10 Running around an 11 on the stimp, fast and quick with a fairly true roll. Some footmarks and bounce present and they do not roll like glass like its sister course but still very nice maintained greens. Most of the greens here are huge and have some undulations to them and present a nice challenge.
Fairways 7/10 Comparable with its sister course however Vineyard has dormant Kikuyu grass at this time. Don't get as much roll on this course as the lakes course. Pretty decent lies in the fairway here.
Tees 7/10 Some divots on the par 3's. Most all tees level. Saw some sand divot mix provided for players on some of the par 3's which is nice.
Bunkers- Was not in any so I cannot give them a rating. They looked raked and contained beach sand.
Rough 7/10 Not much to speak of on this course. Maybe 1- 2 inches at highest.
Layout and Overall...Its a nice challenge. The staff is always friendly here....I can recommend either River Ridge course at this time.

Tee Time: 9:15am Monday December 23rd playing with GKer's Pedro 7170 and Audac1ty--thanks so much for the company guys
Tees: Black
Weather: Slight breeze on front nine, nice weather on back nine
Greens: 9.5/10 Oh my beautiful I would say 12 on the stimp, downhillers were probably close to a 13---prob the closest you could get to Augusta National speed. On #15 I thought I hit what was a good shot 8 feet from the pin--my birdie putt was 70% percent in the hole and lipped out to 8 feet...lol....I would play these greens though everyday if I could--beauty was they held approach shots---staff should be commended on the work they are doing here.
Fairways 7/10 Brown dormant fairways with just barely enough padding and cushion for your irons. You get some roll out here which is nice. For winter conditions and looking at most other courses River Ridge is a nod above the rest when it comes to winter fairways
Tees 7/10 All level which is appreciated. Some divots on the 3 par's but not to bad
Rough 7/10 Cut low, mix of lush green grass
Bunkers 7.5/10 Raked beach sand that is thick and has some nice quality to it.
Layout and Overall: Staff is so nice here, they have two chipping greens, two putting greens and a pretty big driving range that might need some more turf. With the GK coupon this is the best deal around for morning golf.
Looking at every course in Santa Barbara and Ventura County this is the second longest course from the tips other than Lost Canyons Sky. To say you will be tested here especially when the wind is up is the understatement of the year. I love this course so much and if I lived in Oxnard I would be playing it twice a week.

Played this afternoon 12/16/13 with my buddy and GK member Pedro7170 on the Lakes course. My first round in about 3 weeks. We walked it in 4 hrs catching a couple groups on 16 tee box otherwise smooth sailing. We teed off just after 12 noon. The greens are almost like putting on the PGA tour. They were around an 11.5 on the stimp even faster on down hillers. They were so beautiful and true. Best part was they hold iron shots with spin. Chipping if you are on the wrong side of the pin can be challenging and you will get some extra run out. These might be some of the best greens I have putted this year. The fairways are green, semi-firm turf and in above average shape. Tee boxes were level in above average shape. greenside bunker that I was in presented beautiful beach sand that was raked. The rough is low and cut thin which was nice. We had some wind on the front and no wind on the back nine. We used the GK coupon for 20 bucks which is just a steal. If you appreciate and enjoy beautiful greens, a nice layout and good pace of play this is the place for you. Highly recommended by this golfer.
Was up in Santa Barbara this weekend with the family visiting brother in law. Had an opportunity to play Santa Barbara Golf Club with my brother in law on Sunday 11/24. This is one of the few public and private's I have not played in VC and SB county. We played for 27 bucks walking at 12 noon twilight. Another day in paradise in SB 70 degrees and no wind. Starter let us out a little early and we walked the back tees in 4 hours and 30 minutes getting stuck twice for some time on the 8th hole and 16th hole which are both par 3's. First off you will get a work-out walking this course as it is a very hilly up and down layout. I would call it semi-tight with some trees and some pretty straightforward holes. I can only remember couple of doglegs. Very small greens guarded with some nice bunkers. They have a couple reachable par 5's and two challenging longer 3 par's. The course plays longer than its 6037 yardage states. We had a blast.
Greens: 8/10- Highlight of the course, fast and firm especially on chips, true on putts. One side note they are losing many portions of the 9th green--but other than that I was real impressed considering the amount of rounds they get out here.
Fairways 7.5/10 Pretty good shape. Lush Kikuyu grass in say 80% of course, just very few brown spots. Ball sitting up for most part in fairways.
Sand 7/10- Was only in one bunker left greenside #10--it was raked with just enough sand in it.
Tees 5/10- For sure the worst part of the course-some tees with dirt, sand and some tees un-level. I did see mix at the tees so players should be using and hopefully staff can have a chance to rotate boxes as much as possible.
Rough 7.5/10 Lush and green and in some spots up to 3 inches.
Overall: For sure if I could land a deal I would play Sandpiper or La Purisma before this course but this was a nice change of pace that made you think about every shot and challenges you in different ways. Had a great time and round---brother in law enjoyed as well.

Tee Time: Monday 11/18/2013 12 noon. Playing with buddies RGM2525 and my buddy Mack.
Tees: Tips
Weather: Cold wind 10 mph- 65 degrees or so.
Greens: 7/10 I was surprised the greens were quicker and in better shape than I thought. Have not played out here for a little while. They were rolling better today than last round. There are still some ballmarks present and you will not get a perfect roll but I thought they were in good shape.
Fairways 6/10. They are brown doormant with super thin lies. Not my favorite type of turf and tough to hit irons from. With that being said we all got an extra 20 yds on drives. This is probably not the time of year to play Olivas if you want nice fairways. This course has some of the nicest fairways in the summer.
Tees: 7/10 Cut thin semi firm turf, some divot damage on the 3 pars.
Sand: Was not in any bunkers but they looked beautiful as usual with thick white beach sand.
Rough 8/10 Green and lush and a nice contrast in color from the fairways.
We sped around the course today in 3 and half hours walking the back tees. Great staff and practice areas--decent price but will probably hold off on playing here as much over the winter and wait for the spring and summer for the fairways to grow in some.

Played twilight today 11/12/2013 1st group off at 12 noon with a couple buddies and a nice single. POP was 4 hours 20 minutes walking the blue tees. The greens are great here. The putting green showed me how nice the greens were going to be on the course. They rolled fairly true and were firm and fast. Just loved them. The fairways were a mix bag of lush grass with only some minor brown areas. The turf was semi-lush and in good shape. The tees were in good shape as well and are mostly all level here which is nice. The bunkers are generally firm here but they have added sand in certain areas which is appreciated. Our group really enjoyed the day and it was a pleasant surprise today to not have the usual swirling afternoon wind.
