I played here Saturday, 4/11/09, with fellow GKer and buddy Moneysworth. Wanted to get out before the dreaded aerification next week. We got paired with another twosome, one of who is also on GK--zimzam. The first green looked like the pin was not moved since the day before. Area around the hole was beat down and getting badly worn. The rest of the greens were great. Various bare spots in the fairways (notably 2 and 10), but where grass was growing, it looked good. Some of the rough areas were very lush, and hard to get out of. My ball landed in many unfilled divot holes throughout the course. I used about 4 bottles of sand/seed mix during the round. Overall, the course is looking very nice, well worth the discount rate you can find online.

Played Buena this afternoon 4/6 from the tips. Have not played here since November. The greens were in good shape and were hard and firm holding irons and chips. They did not roll as fast as our group... Continue »

Played Buena this afternoon 4/6 from the tips. Have not played here since November. The greens were in good shape and were hard and firm holding irons and chips. They did not roll as fast as our group thought they would but were fairly true and not alot of ball mark damage. The rough was up around the greens and edges of the fairways. The tee boxes were in good shape as well as the sand bunkers. There were some dry patches as far as the fairways were concerned but the fairways were in decent shape. The staff was friendly in the pro-shop.

Course continues to have many bare spots and marked gur on fairways. I understand paspallum is a slow-growing grass, so it may take several years to fill in completely if they don't overseed. Greens i... Continue »

Course continues to have many bare spots and marked gur on fairways. I understand paspallum is a slow-growing grass, so it may take several years to fill in completely if they don't overseed. Greens in good shape, though. Some of the best bunker sand this side of a premium course.

I had to go back to Buenaventura. I asked about the reddish-brown tint on some of the fairways. It's paspalum, a highly salt-tolerant variety of grass, and it is going dormant. I was told the course is slowly being changed over to this variety, due to the use of reclaimed water. Conditions are improving. Not as many bare areas or as many ball marks on greens (though still quite a few). Bunkers have the best sand this side of a beach. I just wish I hit out better. Lots of roll on the fairways. Greens are still very firm; plan on the ball rolling out some.

Played today, 1/4/2009 with Moneysworth. First time on the new layout (well, it has to be about four years since the remodel). Got the round for $35 each through Golfnow.com for an 11:39 tee time. Saved 27% off their rack rate. Course was wide open so we started about 15 minutes early, right behind a foursome. They let us through at the turn, and we never saw them again. Couldn't catch the group ahead, there were so many open holes. Lots of ground under repair on the course. Fairways had a strange reddish tint, and were bumpy in many places with lots of bare ground. Greens were kind of thin, but o.k. except for the numerous ball marks that needed fixing. Sand was exceptionally nice. Shouldn't it be nice this close to the beach?

Walked from the tips and played 27 holes in 4 hours, 40 minutes, teeing off slightly after noon and finishing just before dark. Greens were excellent, fast and well maintained. Many tees were being renovated, which is needed here and are currently in poor condition. The sand traps had nice, fresh sand and were in good shape. Fairways/rough both had numerous areas that were ground under repair, and both need alot of work, numerous bare areas. Overall, the course isn't in very good condition right now and I'd stay away, there was a reason we played 27 holes in 4:40, there weren't many people out playing today.

Played Sunday/23rd club shotgun. In a word: yikes. Right now, BV is not much more than an overplayed muni. Course is in as bad a shape as ever- had not played there since August. Understand there will be a seasonality curve to course conditions…but this was plain bad. Not certain if it’s related to Lee Harlow’s departure or not, but would not spend more than $6 in gas to get here and back.
As usual, it all revolves around the fairways and rough. Thin thin lies on the fairway. For some reason on Sunday, overwatered all over the place. Rough is completely inconsistent and not maintained. The conditions were so poor, would state for the first time they affected my enjoyment of the game. Really bad.
Until someone gets out to BV and reports serious improvements, I’d suggest picking from the variety of other courses a stone’s throw away from BV.

Played here 11/8 for the first time. Greens were great, and held approach shots nicely and on top of that they were putting true. Fairways are still thin in many areas and had GUR ropes. Traps were very nice and fluffy (I should know I was in them enough). Tee's were nice and level. Only downfall to the course was the fairways that were being repaired, other than that the course was in fantastic condition. Played at 6:45 and when we finished there seemed to be some sort of back up at the first tee, but I didn't stay around to talk to anyone to see what the problem was. For some reason lost balls seemed to be at a premium in my group for the day and even balls straight down the fairway seemed to disappear in the leaves on the course. But I will be adding this course into the rotation.
