Very disappointing experience. Greens were pretty awful. They were slow, bumpy, and patchy. Fairways were poor, as well. Lots of "ground under repair" marked in the fairways. Driving range had probably the worst mats I have ever seen. I know I am bashing the place, but there was just nothing great about it.

Every time I am out here the fairways continue to improve with thicker and more lush lies. Still very few thin areas. I enjoyed the fairways here at Olivas. The tees were lush as well as the fringes. ... Continue »

Every time I am out here the fairways continue to improve with thicker and more lush lies. Still very few thin areas. I enjoyed the fairways here at Olivas. The tees were lush as well as the fringes. Great sand in the bunkers. Greens are the only part of the course that I continue to have an issue with. Don't get me wrong there are very few ball marks and they hold approach shots beautiful. They also look great from afar. They are just not rolling like the Old Olivas bent grass greens. At this point you will not get a true roll on some putts here due to the poa growing in most places. I would still rate the greens a tad higher than average. Our group walked as a foursome and played in 4 hours....pace of play was great...nobody behind or in front of us...we were able to practice putt on several of the greens. Friendly staff, great practice area and cool temps. Great golf course overall.

Got out for 9 holes at Olivas Links today and enjoyed the experience. It always amazes me how much cooler it is in Ventura compared to Thousand Oaks. In TO is was 98 degrees and in Ventura, a pleasant 68 – 30 degrees difference only 35 miles away. The course itself is in good shape. The fairways are firm and cut tight with some thin areas (although the thin spots are marked as GUR). The rough is cut down directly adjacent to the fairways but stray a shot beyond the first cut of rough and face a possible lost ball in 2 feet of nasty stuff. The tee boxes were like the fairways, firm and cut tight. The sand was fantastic quality and well kept. Lastly were the greens and although most will find them in good shape, which they are, I can’t help missing those smooth, true, pure bent grass they were in the past. Poa has creeped into them more that ever and it looks like it just might be there to stay. Personally I don’t have a problem with Poa in greens as long as the greens are mowed tight and rolled frequently. Today they were mowed tight but certainly could have used a roll. Love the layout and service as always. I will be back.

Out 1st twilight time today 6/13 with buddy Mack...you can tell that Olivas is really working on improving and growing some new grass on fairways, saw sprinklers out and maintenance crews...getting ready for Ventura City Championship. Fairways in good shape...rate them a 7 right now...some hard pan areas and tight lies and you can get a lot of roll on drives at this time. Tees and fringes were both in beautiful shape with lush green grass. Sand bunkers have the white fluffy sand and are in great shape. Almost too good of shape watch out for friend eggs with high trajectory shots. Greens I would call in average shape. That is my only beef at this time about Olivas. A lot of patches of poa growing on them at this time. Our group as a threesome finished in just under 4 hours today...beautiful day to play golf.

played today 6-2. 2nd time playing olivas today and i was alittle disappointed how the conditions were. Wasnt that bad, but first time i played Olivas link the condition was immaculate. Course was playing tough today due to 20-30 mph winds. It seemed like the course was alittle crowded, but the round took about 4 hours. I hope the conditions improve.

Olivas has achieved quite a feat - worse course management ever witnessed in Socal this Saturday. Considering the competition, that's some going!

Olivas has achieved quite a feat - worse course management ever witnessed in Socal this Saturday. Considering the competition, that's some going!

Ok, I get it - weekend afternoon and Olivas is busy. There's a girls junior tourney going - but of course, nobody in the pro shop thought to mention that. Or that they were behind.

Get to first tee on time and they are at least 40 minutes backed up. No-one there to pair people up so we all just take it into our own hands. Once we get everyone in 4's (regardless their scheduled time) wouldn't you know it some clueless plonk comes up and wants to see everyone's receipts to send them out on time (sic). Finally someone gets through his denseness and he lets us all be starter for a day - fine. Teed off (sic).

First hole pretty slow - it's clear our wee tourney in front is not playing ready golf - they've been watching too many of their heroes on tv. Get to the 2nd tee box and there's four groups on the whole (including mine). Wind is howling back into us so the tots don't hit it too far - one goes into the long cabbage which here is automatic lost ball. Of course, she spends 5 minutes looking for it - no good. Drop, hack out - all her partners of course have not hit meantime and need to get to their ball, shot selection (your 350 yards away - I think there's only one club to consider), check the wind (yep - that tree is blowing sideways towards you - gale - good luck). By the time I hit a tee shot and wait for the fairway to clear to hit my 2nd, 42 minutes has passed since my round began. To play 1 hole and 1 shot (or 5 swings total).

Oh, and here's a course backup you don't always see - 5 groups trying to play a long par 5 - Hilarious. SCGA Junior Tourney official comes by in cart and I hitch a lift back to the clubhouse and give up. Without a hint of irony official says it isn't going to be so bad - they're only playing nine (to which I immediately thought, that's because it gets dark in 6.5 hours).

Marshal of course is chilling out at 1 tee.

Total disaster - avoid on weekends and drive over to River Ridge instead.

Out for 1st twilight time at Olivas today 5/23 right at noon. Played with Bigswede..Conditions were average to just above average at best. Fairways receiving micro punch on many holes on front nine...hardpan and a ton of roll at this time. Light sand on the fairways and seeing some progress of some new turf perking up for this summer. I think that these fairways are going to be in great shape in another month or two. Greens not as quick and fast as they can be. Very healthy grain to them with medium paced speed. Fringes were lush and green and in good shape. Tee boxes similar to the fairways some light sand and hardpan waiting for summer turf to perk up. Sand in great condition...careful some bunkers could plug due to quality sand. We finished in just under 4 hours with a nice pace. Friendly pro-shop staff and a nice stiff breeze this afternoon.

Out for 1st twilight round this afternoon 5/2 with Robstretch teed off at 12:15pm...we played the tips on a windy day. Course was closing #18 at 2pm for fairway maintenance and we played the back nine first...we had to rush and got to #18 just before 2pm. It would have been nice of the staff to tell golfers that before teeing off on the 10th tee(like in the pro-shop). They are completing some current maintenance at Olivas on the front nine fairways with a small verticut in every fairway and some light sand to go with it. The fairways are still playable and actually slightly had a little more grass to them then the last time I played here. Give these fairways some water and maybe a month or so and they should be perking up nicely due to the grass being a summer type of grass. Some of the tees were also sanded and thin and in decent shape. Aprons for the most part were green and very nice. The greens were very slow for Olivas's standards. I fixed several ball marks. Sand here is always in great shape. We walked the course in a little over 4 hours. I think I will wait a couple months before coming back out here to give the fairways some room to grow out and hopefully the greens will be back to normal Olivas standards which is usually fast and firm.

Got an 11:40 tee time from golf now and they let us off an hour earlier for no change in rates. This was such a nice course, even with the 10mph winds. The fairways had enough width, the par 3's were under 200 yards, the scenery was awesome, and the pace of play was perfect. Our foursome rarely had to wait and we were never pressured by the group behind us. The fairways were a bit too thin at spots and the greens were not as fast as they looked which sort of made up for the hilly surfaces they were on. I actually had a putt stop on me as it was going downhill, and no it didn't hit anything. Good luck finding a flat green, they all require your finest wedge shots. I wish I lived closer to this great course.
