Hadn't played this for some time and was very disappointed in anything other than the main part of the fairways. and greens. Rough was very spotty and uneven with most lies being between clumps of grass and lying on bare dirt. The bunkers had enough rocks that I really didn't want to hit out from them due to possible club damage. This day was the best reason that I can think of to keep an old set of "kick around" clubs as a back up to the "good" set I normally play without worry. Good layout but the conditioning leaves a lot to be desired

First played Rustic Canyon (RC) when it opened and it left little to no impression. Perhaps it was overSHADOWed by its brawny neighbor, Lost Canyons (LC) located down the 118. Eventually, I grew tired of LC's steep price and profound difficulty. Returned to RC last week with some concern about storm damage. I must say I was impressed by its conditions. I had forgotten how the RC layout retains the grittiness of a true Scottish links course transplanted into a SoCal environment. It lacks the refinement of some overly polished courses in appearance but that is not a bad thing for most true links have that quality. RC also maintains a decent amount of difficulty with its expansive mounded greens with generous aprons, chaparral carries and cagey pot bunkers.

The lack of development encroaching onto the course was refreshing - even LC has one of their 18's stymied by housing developments.

Very high marks for RC after a long sabbatical. However, very low marks for the amount of time it took to play the course. A combination of affordability and difficulty for the average golfer adds up to a 5+ hour round.

Well, after a year away, I once again have to say how cool this course is. The changes after the washout this winter are great. I especially like the new berm on #4... makes a basic hole much more interesting looking.

They'd punched most of the greens already when we played first off on the 9th, and it looked like they weren't going to punch the new greens. The course seemed in nice shape to me otherwise. The only real trouble we had with it was the couple greens that had been punched but not rolled... there were tire tracks that left grooves in the green... cost me at least 1 stroke.

There aren't many things about LA I miss... but this course is definately one of them.

Some of the chipping areas still are recovering from aeration, and the speed on some of the greens are a little inconsistent, but these are minor complaints. This is a solid golf facility and it always is a pleasure to play here. Just prepare yourself for a 5 hour round and don't sweat it.
