I agree with Jackmac. Rustic is one of my favorite courses around and I play it usually at "off hours" during the week and have NO PROBLEM getting around the course in 3.5 hours.

I agree with Jackmac. Rustic is one of my favorite courses around and I play it usually at "off hours" during the week and have NO PROBLEM getting around the course in 3.5 hours.

I have NEVER seen a marshall on the course moving golfers along. I have even called the club house from my cell phone and they simply look at the computer and say so and so is on hole number X, and don't send a body out to check it out.

Rustic is tough from the tips and a simple question at check in such as "gentlemen what handicaps are playing today? then we suggest that you play the (B/Bl/Wh/Rd/gld) T's today. "for eveyones enjoyment we EXPECT you to play within 4 hours. If you set your objectives high you can reach them if you think 5 hour rounds of golf is OK then that is what you will get.

A couple of Marshalls with some effort from the management will allow this course to play within 4 hours. Try it you will be surprised at the result!

It is a great course and with a little effort it can play under 4 hours!

One of the best things that Rustic could do to improve pace of play is to get at least one or two more Marshalls on the course, and to genuinely intervene with groups that fall behind. If they're a full hole behind, they should be moved up to the next tee so they can catch up. If they fall behind again, the group should be removed from the course.

If polite but firm Marshalls are truly working the course, pace will improve. Marshalls should instruct players who are trying to play from the tips to show a handicap index card proving a 5 index or better and should suggest the blue or white tees. Further, Marshalls should provide supportive advice about "ready golf," and should monitor potentially problematic groups actively.

Most importantly, Marshalls should strive to enforce a 3.5 hour maximum pace of play for the first few groups to go off every morning. If you can't maintain that pace, play at a different time of day, rather than gumming up the course for everyone who follows you. This really is attainable and ought to be a goal at every public course. The way to make this happen is to communicate aggressively (signs, notes in carts, messages on the GPS machines, Marshalls' comments, a word from the starter, printed messages on scorecards, in yardage books, etc.), and to Marshall effectively. It's not hard, and it's a great way to ensure that everyone has a good time, gets good value, and most importantly, it's the way to keep your best customers happy.

Pace of play…

At Rustic Canyon we have always tried our best to keep the value of the golf course at or above everyone’s expectation level. To some people, “Value” is simply the course layout/condition for the price. To others, pace of play is the key ingredient to value. Blending the two is not as easy.

We are, as most of you know, a busy golf course. Doing 200+ rounds on our busy days and controlling pace of play becomes challenging at times. We would love to see the course play at 4 and ½ hours teeing off at 10:00am but with that many players covering 7,000+ yards… keeping it at 5 hrs. or less is sometimes a feat. Our past weekend, we had a mid day pace of play of 4 hrs. 55 min. Nothing to brag about, but not over 5 hours!

As a Golf Community, we all need to do our part both as players of the game and enforcers of etiquette. We apologize to all the players that put “Value” more on the pace of play end of the spectrum. We can only get better by your comments and suggestions. Help us get the better “Value” for all golfers.

The conditions were appropriate for the green fees. All fairways were green and groomed (if a bit long) without bare spots. Rustic Canyon provides a nice change-up to the strategy required on approach shots at other SoCal courses. Here, "links style" really means links, with receptive and well-conditioned greens that are mowed at a slightly longer cut around the edges that double the size and possibilities on approach.

That being said, pace of play was horrific. We completed 12 holes after 3 1/2 hours, and were on pace for a 5 1/2 round of golf. As a courtesy and suggestion, I mentioned the issue to the pro shop. I'm not certain what word comes to mind that befits the response I heard....something between apathy and denial....... This complaint has been raised in previous postings, but I preferred to give them the benefit of the doubt.

As much fun as the course was (and has the potential to be), I'm sorry to say I won't go back. If a course won't even strive to maintain a standard for pace-of-play, they'll loose business from the golfer that benefits their course - the ones that fix their ball mark on the green a 4 others from the golfers that don't care and go on to play a 5 1/2 hour round.

Tough course with harrowing greens....makes you think your shots out, worth the money, although not a walkable course.

overall, the course is playing good. there are some bare spots in rough, but the greens are rolling their best in months. a little slow getting around, 5 hours, but definitely worth playing.
