Sterling Hills Management can't decide if they want to encourage Seniors to play their course or not. They advertise "Seniors Day" on Tuesdays and then tell you when you arrive that the advertised greens fees don't include a cart and that carts are mandatory. When you advise them that you prefer to walk they advise you that the walking greens fee is only $3.00 less than the "riding fee". While the course is in excellent condition (and a fun track to play) I doubt that our foursome will return until there is a more welcoming attitude forthcoming from Sterling Hills management.

played 2/11 in the morning after the heavy rains and the course held up like a champ. you'd have no idea that it poured hours before. fairways are good and the greens are not the fastest, but true and best of all, people at sterling fix their ball marks! either everyone there is doing their jobs or the staff is running around out there fixing marks, but easily the best i've seen in the area. the only negative is the tee boxes. other posters have mentioned it, but the tee boxes are far from being in good shape. massive divots without people putting seed in, uneven lies, overall could use some improvement. aside from that, from some grass and play, it's worth it.

Played 1/25 and course is in great shape - particularly for winter. Greens fast and true, fairways great with the exception of a few wet spots, sand perfect, T-boxes OK - they are overseading and working on the ones that need some help. Recommend that you add it to your rotation particularly for this winter, since conditions at some of the other courses in the area are spotty.

Played a speedy early round today at Sterling and found the place in good shape except for the tee boxes which are just okay. They're pretty badly damaged in spots, and the eleventh tee was nearly nothing but dirt. Fairways are nice and they seem to be doing a better job with the bunkers now than they did in the past. Greens are running medium-fast with a really nice roll, and they're all at consistent speeds and softness, which is nice. My only complaint is that when it's cart-path only, it can be VERY difficult to get a yardage. The sprinkler heads were marked at one time with a kind of glue-on "chip" that had the yardage on it, and on at least 8 of 10 sprinkler heads I looked at today (it was cart path only), that chip had come off. That's life, I guess - bring your feel and some creative shotmaking, and you'll still have a great time at this sporty, interesting layout.

First, the bad about the course and I really only have one: the tee boxes. They were either overgrown, had severe divot damage or both. They were absolutely hammered.
However, the rest of the course was in great shape. If they truly did punch on the dates listed, it was hardly noticeable. The greens rolled really well, the rough was real lush (I found it a few times) and the fairways, while pretty tight, were also in great shape. Pace of play was good for the day after Turkey day (4.5 hours). Once they get the tee boxes in order, this place will be top notch once again.

Price has gone up a bit to $80 on weekends, and now you only get one small bucket of balls rather than a basically unlimited amount as was the case previously. However, that is still better than other... Continue »

Price has gone up a bit to $80 on weekends, and now you only get one small bucket of balls rather than a basically unlimited amount as was the case previously. However, that is still better than other courses like Moorpark CC, Lost Canyons, and Tierra Rejada where they charge $100+/round and then charge you for range balls, too!
Course is in "good" shape-not "very good" or "great". Greens are not well kept and are a bit fuzzy even where not marred by excessive balls marks. Tee boxes are uneven on many holes, and the lies are a bit tight when you are on the fairway within 100 yards of the green-no real cushion to get a nice lob wedge on to the green.
Still one of the best places to play if you don't mind going out to Camarillo to play (or if you live out there).

Hadn't played Sterling in about three years, and I think I stayed away too long. The course is not in perfect shape, but overall it's pretty good - the greens are rolling nicely but do show a lot of ball-mark damage in spots. Fairways were a little thin in places and somewhat hairy in others, but for the most part I thought they were in very good condition for late September. The bunkers are in good shape, though sometimes kind of crusty. As far as design goes, this is a solid, sporty layout that gives a lot of options, isn't terribly penal, but does make you work for a good score. Holes that look like potential pushovers can really jump up and bite you, but at the same time, you can hit recovery shots around the place, too. It's a good value at $60/weekday. Not sure this course blows away others in the area but it's a good one to have in the local rotation.
