Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii!well, it's brookside. tee boxes are beat up, fairways have some bare spots and the rough is inconsistent. best part really is no one, i mean no one was out there on labor day sunday and we had a huge email discount. we had the entire course to ourselves, so no matter how lousy the conditions, it was fun when you've got the place to yourself. i've seen brookside 10 times worse, so if you've got the opportunity to get out during the week and you're not expecting the best conditions, then you'll have a great time.
got out first on monday 8/10 - perfect. tee boxes are good. the fairways are a little inconsistent and narrow! they've cut the rough down, so it's not as tough as usual, so if you miss the back alleys they call fairways you're not exactly dead. greens are true, a little bumpy and you've really got to hit the uphills. overall good time.
course is in its usual fantastic condition. get out there soon because the clubhouse is due to open soon and the rates are going sky high! rumor is $190 on the weekend. i never knew a clubhouse could cost so much or influence rates so much. angeles is a nice course, but $190 nice? i think they need to rethink a few things, especially in this economy. golf courses are hurting all over and putting out incentives to bring people out so this seems a little short sighted. good luck to them, i've played it for probably the last time.
what can you say, it's brookside. the greens are starting to come around, but they are very bumpy. by the time the city championship rolls around, they'll be good. tee boxes are suspect and the fairways were surprising not great since it's been months that a car was parked on them.
all in all, it's a muni that let's out 5-somes! and gets A LOT of play. they have raised the rates for non-residents to $60 on the weekend, which is a rip, so get out during the week when it's a little faster to play, though still slow and pay a little less.

this course always pleases. played canyon/ridgeline. great layout and always in good condition. the only thing i was surprised at was how long the grass was on the fairways. not complaining and they were not overly shaggy, but they had what i would call a "winter coat". seems they had not mowed in a while or not as close as usual. small complaint, overall it was a good round.
overall the course is playing very well as usual, but the heat this summer has taken its toll on the fairways and especially the rough. there is no rough to speak of and there are many patchy spots within it as well. it does make the course easier to play. i did like the fact the greens have sped up. they were playing very slow a month ago and probably kept shaggy because of the heat, but now are back to their normal speed which is fast!
the greens are slow, slow, slow! the greens have not sped up since they aerated months ago. everyone i talked to at the course agreed. the guys in the pro shop said 8.5 on the stimp! one thing moorpark was always known for is the greens and for some reason they are not speeding them up. fairway rough was up as well. killed any roll you may have needed. that was ok, but get the greens back up to speed!
greens are still 2 weeks away. bumpy and not fully repaired. not worth the $120 they started charging again. overall the course is good, the greens are just taking too long to get back.
still in great shape from the City Championship. we'll see how long that lasts. only downside was the pace of play on a tuesday morning. teed off @ 8 and it still took 4.5 hrs.
i have been a big brookside basher in the past, but i can't believe what i saw! it was a playable course! all the tee boxes were in great shape, the fairways were good and the greens were soft and rolled fairly smooth. they were still on the slow side (it is brookside) but they are augusta smooth for that place! now obviously they are getting ready for the Pasadena city championship, so it's a little like being on putting your best face on for a party, you want to impress everyone, so we'll see if they can maintain this incredibly high level for them. i like most of the new bunkers, but the one on 3 puzzles me. the hole is already tough and long, adding a bunker in a landing area where you're still going to be 200+ out is just cruel.
i do have to gripe about 2 things though... we were the second group off on a friday morning and it still took 4.5 hours! second, i still saw the huge back-up at #2 at around 9:30 which means that you still can't tee off past 8am and have a decent time. i can't believe i'll say this, but i'll play it again...until they break my heart again, play a round in 5.5 hours behind a fivesome and the course goes to crap after the PCC.

the greens were lightly sanded 5 days ago, so the greens are very hard and a little on the dry side. They are also slower than normal. Overall, great weather and a good day other than taking 4.5 hours to play on a Friday morning. We were a foursome being held up by a twosome! Nice job of marshalling out there boys!
get out before they start aeriating. course is playing at its best right now.
