Enjoyed Sterling yesterday and found it to be in pretty good shape. The greens are recovering well from aeration but there's still a ways to go before they're smooth. This is a fun, playable course that's clearly intended to be kept up to high-end standards. The tee boxes are the only truly weak spot - and they are, generally, pretty awful. It's tough to find a level lie on any of them, and many are just horribly beaten-up. Some attention to the tees would really go a long way toward making this course's condition stand out as excellent. Overall, a fun, sporty course with some pretty severe greens, but one that anyone can really play.

Nice course!Back nine played a bit slow due to it being senior day.Pin placement on the greens are really tough.Played on 9/23 in 4.5 hrs.I'll be back.

The greens need time to recover from way too many ballmarks. The greens are reasonably fast and could be very good but for wear from careless players, slope and pin placements. The placements are sometimes far too close to the green edges. #6 and #12 are sometimes just silly. Sterling is very good about giving each player a very nice ballmark fixer tool, but it seems very few people use them. I wish that the starters would ask players to fix their own ballmarks as each group starts and occasionally ask during play.

The blue tees are getting considerable play and wear. The blacks are very good to immaculate.

I walked in about 2:30pm as a single and played right away with another 2some, later joined by another single at #3. I walked (they rode) the front 9 with them in about 2.5 hours. I fixed about 5 severe ballmarks on each green. I diverted back to walk and play the front nine again, this time from the blacks (1.5 hours 2 balls) and had to repair about 3 more new ballmarks on each green.

It's a better course from the blacks.

this is my fave course in so cal. played on 9/1, labor day. teed off at 2 and was sitting at the bar having a pint before 7. the greens were a little torn up but they still played well. fairways were a little more plush than the norm. well, plush for this course which usually plays very links style on a few holes. all in all still a great course

For the most part the course is in great condition. The fairways are some of the greenest and most lush I have seen this summer in SoCal (few areas under repair but did not really come into play). The rough is thick and fairly penalizes you for not hitting the rolling fairways. Pace of play was good for a twilight round, although they sent off a group of walkers in front of us which slowed us down a bit (golf purists may cringe, but they should not allow walkers during the latter portions of the day in twilight rounds...just makes it too hard to finish). On the negative side, some of the tee boxes were in just horrible condition. Tee on number two was bare, muddy and not level. Par three tees win the Edward James Olmos Award for divots, pock marks and holes. Very difficult to find some pristine green to tee 'er up. The other issue I had was the inconsistency of the sand in the traps. Unfortunately I visited the beach often during this round and was able to sample sand from many of the holes. On some holes it was sugary and beautiful. Others it was hard like concrete and still others were heavy and wet. Granted it was the afternoon, but it made it very difficult to judge shots when you had no idea what to expect. All in all will definitely return. Beautiful course, cooler (temperature) than other Ventura locations and great fairways.
