For the most part the course is in great condition. The fairways are some of the greenest and most lush I have seen this summer in SoCal (few areas under repair but did not really come into play). The rough is thick and fairly penalizes you for not hitting the rolling fairways. Pace of play was good for a twilight round, although they sent off a group of walkers in front of us which slowed us down a bit (golf purists may cringe, but they should not allow walkers during the latter portions of the day in twilight rounds...just makes it too hard to finish). On the negative side, some of the tee boxes were in just horrible condition. Tee on number two was bare, muddy and not level. Par three tees win the Edward James Olmos Award for divots, pock marks and holes. Very difficult to find some pristine green to tee 'er up. The other issue I had was the inconsistency of the sand in the traps. Unfortunately I visited the beach often during this round and was able to sample sand from many of the holes. On some holes it was sugary and beautiful. Others it was hard like concrete and still others were heavy and wet. Granted it was the afternoon, but it made it very difficult to judge shots when you had no idea what to expect. All in all will definitely return. Beautiful course, cooler (temperature) than other Ventura locations and great fairways.

A buddy and I used to play Tierra Rejada quite a bit several years ago. I remembered it as a solid, if uninspiring round with some interesting elevation changes and decent course conditions. Then courses like Robinson Ranch, Moorpark C.C. and others in the LA/Ventura/Simi area opened up and we just sort of stopped playing Tierra. Not that it was a bad experience, just that the other options nearby were just better. I heard of this site last week and saw some good reviews of TR so I decided to go back after a two year absence. A few holes into my round I realized that the course was like an old girlfriend...the longer you don't see her, the better looking she gets in your mind...and when you finally do see her, you realize why breaking up with her years ago was the right decision.

Compared to the other nearby offerings Tierra just doesn't cut it. From the poor placement of the driving range (leading to an army of yellow range balls strewn along two separate fairways) to several gimmicky holes that interrupt the flow of play, Tierra is neither a smart nor compelling layout. Greens were extremely inconsistent. Some were extremely scarred by balls marks (apparently no one who plays there cares enough to fix their marks) while others were like a pool table and rolled very true.

Customer service was also a bit shakey. Although I had a twilight tee time I still think you should have at least one Marshal on the course at all times. We waited on tee after tee as the foursome infront of us allowed at least two full hole to open up in front of them. A call to the front desk let us know that there was no one on the course to speed them up and that they would send a message out to them via the cart GPS. Not very helpful.

All in all...not a BAD round, but I left realizing why I don't play there anymore. At similar price points and in the same area, there are just too many better choices.
