Played 2/7/2015 at 7:50 AM. Temp in 60's; occasional light winds. Weather is unusually warm for LV for early February which makes for great golfing conditions. Update from November review. Course is much improved. All fairways are open with no cart restrictions. Most of the bare spots in the fairways and rough are gone. Grass has grown in nicely. Good lies in the fairway and rough is getting thicker and more challenging. Greens are really good. Bunkers are OK. But many of the tees are quite bare and some are not too level. Driving range is pretty bare so only good for loosening up. Suggest you avoid the practice putting green just outside the pro shop as it wasn't mowed and not representative of the greens on the course. I can give Arroyo a very positive recommendation if you are looking for a place to play.

Played 11/22/2014 at 7:10. Temp is 60's, a little wind, POP was great, less than 3.5 hours. Quick update from my October review. Course is firming up. Greens are fine and a little quicker than before. Fairways and rough are not improving. While they are getting firmer, there are many more bare spots now. You can't play the ball down -- too many aeration holes in the fairways and the rough is very inconsistent. But the desert areas have been cleaned out and it's easier to find a wayward shot. Local rate of $59 is a little pricey for the overall course conditions. But it is pretty easy to get a tee time. Can only give a luke warm recommendation.

Played 10/25/2014 at 7:40. POP about 4 hours. Temp in 80's with a freshening wind toward the end. Course is a couple weeks out of overseeding and it is in pretty good shape with only one cart path only hole. Fairways are still a little soft, but getting firmer. Rough is good, bunkers are a little thin and tee boxes are OK. Greens are also quite good. Softer than normal and also slower than I usually see there. I would guess around 10 with some ball marks. Carts now have GPS. Same system used at Angel Park with the latest wrinkle including video commercials! Audio is very low so the sound is unobtrusive. Marketing guys may wish to rethink the commercials for women's hand lotion as the golf demographic is still more male than female. Green fees were $59 with player's card -- just slightly higher than the OB Sports rate at their courses on the west side of town. Range balls are included, but grass on range is pretty spotty and the range balls are quite hard. Not a place I would go for serious practice, but OK for warming up. Decent restaurant with patio. Beverage cart service was regular and friendly. Bag service good. Starter kept things moving. Course uses ten minute intervals for tee times, so play flowed well and marshal was around to check on the pace. Enjoyable course to play as long as the green fee is reasonable. In the last two previous fall seasons, Arroyo took a long time to come out of overseeding. This year is different. Maybe a new course superintendent. If you are coming to town soon (or are already here), consider playing Arroyo. If you want to have a fun round, play it one tee up from where you think you should play. The new scorecards have the correct course rating/slope (see Arroyo website) which is higher than shown on the Greenskeeper scorecard info.

Friendly designed course by Arnold Palmer that winds through a nice neighborhood against the Red Rock mountain with some views of the Las Vegas valley. A few holes are a minute ride from each other making this course a dull for walkers, but a compulsory cart applies.

Greens: mostly smooth and there are no severe slopes/undulations making the subtle breaks tough to read, but fun.

Fairways are tightly mowed and are in great shape that runs but not dried out.

Bunkers looks like it's in good condition and are with good amount of sand.

Tees are healthy and are level with nice grass.

Overall conditions are good to excellent.
Great value.
Fun and enjoyable course with good scenery against the mountain and valley.

We will be back again!

Wednesday,6/25, with a 11:00 tee time. Booked through the course's website for $30 (have to pay online), saving $10 from booking over the phone. Arroyo is the public course for Red Rock Country Club (and it's private Mountain course). Service is country club quality, nice and friendly from bag drop to 18th hole. Check in was easy. Outstanding starter, very knowledgeable with a few course tips. Drink cart was around about 5 times, and there were water coolers every 3 holes.

Conditions were just "OK." It's what I would expect in late July and early August, during the dog days of summer, not late June, it hasn't been hot yet. Tee boxes were fine. Fairways were sometimes lush, sometimes thin. Rough was just a cut above the fairway. Greens were fine. Somewhat smooth and a medium pace. You could see the effect of unrepaired ball marks causing the new grass to grow in a different shade. The bunkers were probably the worst I have ever seen and there's a lot of them, all thin or just hardpacked. On #1, I chipped off the liner of a greenside bunker. Plenty of grass and weeds growing in others. Raking was an exercise in futility, it didn't even leave lines, just smooth out where your club hit, no footprints were made.

Last complaint: No GPS on the carts. The course winds through a few neighborhoods, with some long drives between some holes, like a quarter to half mile. I guess they have a few guests that cross over and end up on the private course, which is really easy to do.

Outside of the conditions, I really liked the course. I loved the design and variety of holes throughout the course, and outside 8 and 9, no 2 alike. While it's in a community, houses are out of play except for a really big hook or slice. It is worth $30, but no much more until conditions improve. Incredible potential.

I teed off Wednesday, June 18 at a little after 8am. I was looking for a course that was close to my hotel (Red Rock), and this one was about five minutes away, plus golfnow had a really cheap "hot deal" for $35. The course is an Arnold Palmer design, and is the best "condo course" I can ever remember playing. Though it winds through a residential community, there is a lot of natural topography that has remained undisturbed, and the views of the surrounding hills are very beautiful. There is a nice variety of holes, with a couple long par threes and short par fives. Mr. Palmer seems to love those reachable par fives. Conditions from tee to green were very lush. Its funny you have to go to the desert to find lush conditions, but fairways and rough were terrific. The greens were a little sandy, but they rolled well with good speed. I couldn't get the feel for them, but I think that was a stickboy issue. Bunkers were a little wet, but ok. Customer service was great and the pace of play was just under four hours. Also, it was windy part of the day, and I think the surrounding hills and homes knocked the wind down a little. I recommend this course. Not as the centerpiece of a Vegas trip, but certainly as a solid option in that part of town.

Course is in good shape. Greens are firm and medium quick, but starting to get some ball mark damage. That problem will go away in ten days when they aerate.
Fairways are OK with some minor aeration holes. Did not affect run out, but occasionally the ball would settle in a hole, but I learned how to bump my ball many years ago. Rough is good, still fairly short so not much a penalty for straying off the fairway other than the increased likelihood of a stance with the ball above or below your feet. Bunkers are good.

No restrictions on the course. All holes are open with no "carts paths only."

The only issue today was at the start. I play here almost every Saturday and usually have the second time behind a group of regulars who play really fast. So I am not used to waiting. As usual, we had the second time.

However, the pro shop let two foursomes go off ahead of us, but after the first group. The story was that these eight guys were associated with the UNLV golf team. And the pro shop told me that the course likes to support local college golf.

But the real UNLV golf team was playing in the NCAA regionals this weekend, so somebody was stretching the truth. Even though we played in 3.5 hours, we had to wait on almost every shot. So it was mostly just annoying.

I don't expect any sympathy when I read the comments on SoCal golf with the 5+ hour rounds. I just wanted to vent. There are other courses I can play for about $15 less a round. I pay a premium at Arroyo ($69) and I expect to get premium treatment. Thanks for the forum.

Played 3/15/2014 with GK jshea at 7:15. Weather in the 60's with some North wind. Excellent course conditions. All holes open with no restrictions. Greens are smooth and firm. Rolling probably about 11. Plenty of longer grass around the greens so errant shots do not run off into the bunkers. Fairways and rough are really good. No bad lies and all green grass. Bunkers are also quite good. Not too soft and not too firm -- just the right amount of sand. If I had any complaint, the par 3 tees are a little beat up. But OK if you use a tee. Course plays slightly more difficult with a North wind as opposed to the prevailing summer Southwest wind. But the North wind makes the par 5 5th and par 5 11th reachable. This course has some modest elevation changes from tee to green, so club selection can be challenging until you have played the course a few times. This course advertises 10 minutes between tee times, so it is unusual to see any major backups. We were the fourth foursome off and finished in 4 hours, which is slower than normal. The first two groups were a little slow and the regular marshal had the day off. A little pricey (local rate $69) compared to the other nearby courses, but the course conditions and pace of play make it worth the extra $15-$20. And it is a fun and challenging course to play. If you are coming to LV for March Madness, including an early morning round here would be a good idea.

Yesterday morning, my weekend golf partner and I played the Arroyo course at Red Rock Country Club. We had an early morning tee time (8:10am) and the weather on the west side of the Las Vegas valley was a little cold (40 degrees) with a sustained wind.

As always, the outside services staff was very friendly and had the groups moving ahead of the schedule. The foursome ahead of us had a member running behind so we did not tee off early, but we were on time. The first few holes were slow since we played as a threesome and we typically play fast, but eventually the rangers helped push along some of the slower groups. By the back-9 we were playing close to our normal pace and finished the round in less than 4 hours (always a good thing).

The course was generally in very good shape. The tee boxes and fairways were completely filled in and the greens were smooth. There was some variability in the speed from one green to another, but this could have been due to the earlier tee time and the wind throughout different parts of the course. The good news is that most of the course was open to carts, which is not always the case on the Arroyo course. There were a couple places roped off, including the first half of the fairway on 18, but other than that the course was very accessible. There was one bunker on 18 that is under construction and was marked as GUR, but this did not affect any of the players in our group. According to one of the staff members, the bunker is being reduced to build a better walkway from the cart path to the green.

Overall, playing at Arroyo is a very enjoyable experience and they offer good rates for locals or Player Card members. I recommend playing the blue tees at 5,904 yards instead of the black tees, which are 6,433. This may seem too short for a player with a handicap under 20, but it makes for a much more rewarding round and it helps maintain a good pace of play.
