Wolfdancer gets ranked among the top public courses in Texas and it was easy to see why! The name “Wolfdancer” stems from the Native Americans who occupied the land years ago. And, I thought the land was the course’s defining feature. There is a mix of open and wooded holes, elevation changes and nice views of the area. Plus, there aren’t any homes in sight. Arthur Hills designed the course.

The front nine is highlighted by the 556 yard par-5 3rd (603 yards from the tips). It plays downhill from an elevated tee box and offers an endless view, where the sky just falls into the terrain. The sea of bunkers contrasted nicely against the green grass too! Like many holes at Wolfdancer the 3rd has a great look to it.

The back nine seemed to have a bit of everything, including a split fairway on the 18th. Much of the back nine plays on some flat land near the river – the 13th through the 18th holes. These holes are lined by pecan trees and are a relaxing way to end the round, after some difficult holes early. For reference, the white tees are 71.3/132/6314.

Before you reach that river stretch of holes, you get to play the 12th, which was my favorite hole at Wolfdancer! The 12th is a short par-3, which is 115 yards from the whites. It is a transition hole on the river bluff and it plays about a club downhill. The green is small and trust me you don’t want to miss over the back edge, as things drop off severely.

The conditions were very nice. The course was well watered and it was comforting to see plenty of green turf, compared to the burnt out look of many courses in this region during the summer! I had good lies and putts rolled well.

Wolfdancer can be a bit pricey but there are a few deals out there to be found if you are so inclined.

Played 5/6 with Dan and Maya at 3:40. Had an email confirmed 3:20 tee time that was not on their sheet, but they got us out at 3:40 and we were able to finish despite the snail's pace. Tees were good. Fairways were wide and in excellent shape. Rough was lost-ball deep and long in many areas. Most traps had very nice sand but found a greenside bunker with small rocks, odd for a course that charges $81 for a twilight round and 130 otherwise. The greens were also a sore point. They were to be punched the following day and it seemed they have let them go for a while. They were cut thin and had a lot of sand on them just to even them out. I can't say they putted terribly, but there were a few unexpected turns and for a higher-end course I expected much more. It was a nice layout and very green with lots of trees, bunkers and some water. Played the Members tees at 6300 and there were quite a few short holes that tempted you. Next time I won't be so easily seduced. Some elevation changes and very scenic. This just wasn't what I expected in a Texas golf course and was very pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the place was. It's about 30 mins. east of Austin at a Hyatt resort with not much around and had the greens been in better shape, I'd have highly recommended it, but maybe a month from now.

The rain has been great for this course and the area as well. The tee boxes were great and well maintained. The fairways had great coverage with a couple thin spots here and there throughout the round. The traps were everywhere and were also in great shape - a few were under maintenance and we were told if your ball landed in one not to try and retieve the ball but to let the pro shop know at the end of your round and they would replace them for you!! The rough was extremely thick and swallowed up bad shots! The greens were very quick and made putting difficult, but were very true and had less break than what they looked. The deer, wildlife and beautiful scenery make this a great place to enjoy a round! Somewhat expensive green fees to make it regular for many of us though.

Maintenance on the greens recently was fishy!! They were still recovering, very sandy, and STUNK like fish!! The cart kids said they had used fish emulsion as a natural fertilizer.....Affirmative!! This is a course that one needs to play a few times before expecting to shoot their usual score. The drought in the area was seen on this course and the surrounding hills. A very nice resort course, but would not pay the rack rate to play here.
