I played Trail Ridge in Sun City West early on a Sunday morning. In my opinion it is the most difficult of the 4 regulation-length SCW courses for the average player.

The conditions were excellent all around, as they usually are on the SCW courses. Greens were blemish-free, smooth, rolled at a good pace, firm but not ridiculous. Fairways had no imperfections that I saw. Typical dormant Bermuda rough, and the bunkers were in good condition. I wish I could be more descriptive but there was really nothing possible to complain about!

Paired with a friendly resident of the community, we finished in well under 3 hours with me walking and him riding. This is an easy course to walk, and the rate to walk for a non-SCW resident was $50 vs. $62 riding. It's a great value.

Most notable, the greens are great. Very fast, but not shaved to the point of destruction. Very smooth greens on all holes. Fairways are lush all the way around. It is winter, so the rough is dead. Playable. Staff was very nice and helpful.

Highly recommended - good layout, nice conditions, good price.

The only negative, this may be the hardest ground I've ever seen on a golf course. Take Advil before, because if you try to take a divot you will hurt by the end of the round. Rejoice if you find a ball mark on a green, for it is a rare treat indeed.

Tee boxes were level and in good shape. Fairways were in good shape but a little dry so a lot of roll out. Rough was cut pretty low so not much of a factor. Greens were firm, medium/fast and rolling true. This course was a little drier than the others but it didn't effect the play if the course.

Played on 10/3, course was in excellent condition all around. Bunkers have recently been redone and are the best I've seen for awhile. This is a fun, straightforward, very playable course, what you see is what you get. A good variety of holes, requiring some thinking. Course has a lot of mature trees, and this translates to shade in AZ which is often a selection criterion in hotter months!

Played 10/3 with Johnny GK, SeveB, and tklabunde. I always have a great time playing with other GKer's. For a course that is about to go into over seed in a few weeks, the conditions were amazing. Fairways were lush. The rough was in great shape. It was thick and lush as well. Not real long and you would get a good lie, but you needed to catch your shot clean. Come in a little heavy and it would twist your club head. Greens were nice too. A little softer than in the past, since you could make a ball mark. They rolled true and were medium-fast. (10-10.5) Putts above the hole can get away from you if your not careful. The course just had a complete sand trap renovation. I took some extra shots out of them to get a good sampling. They are fantastic! When you twist your feet in them, It's all sand underneath. No more 1-2 inches of sand then rock hard ground. They have all new rakes. On one side they are just like most you would use with teeth. Flip the rake over, and the backside is ridged. If you use the backside you can leave a smooth surface with no teeth marks in the sand. Would like to see more courses go to these rakes.

October is a tough month to play in AZ. Just about every course is in some sort of flux as far as conditions. Get out and play Trail Ridge if you can before the over seed. You won't be disappointed. It's a great value. Food and drink are very reasonable. It's not real busy after 12p weekdays and on the weekends. POP is 4 hours or less.

Played the Sun City West Trail Ridge Course yesterday with GK’ers Isoceles, SeveB and tklabunde. Great time guys! Teed it up around 2:00pm and finished in under 4 hours. Course was in fantastic shape. Best I have ever seen it. Very lush fairways and rough. Greens in great shape running medium/fast, firm and smooth (with exception to some spike marks). The bunkers were recently renovated and as a result all of them were in immaculate shape. The weather was in the upper 90’s so I found myself drinking a lot of Gatorade…but one of the things I really like about Sun City West Courses is they are extremely fair with pricing, not just the green fees, but the food and drink too. Put it this way, I got a Snickers and two Gatorades at the turn for only $4.50. The course is going to be overseeding in a couple weeks, almost disappointed to hear about that considering how good their summer conditions are right now, so I highly recommend playing it soon.

I had a great opportunity to play in the GK skins game on 3/22. I thought the course was in great shape and a real surprise at how much fun it was.
It definitely has it's positives especially this time of year in the Phoenix area. It was a short drive for me to the course.
The practice range was in good shape and range balls are inexpensive.
As the other guys who played the course said, it was in really good shape. The tee boxes were level and lush. The fairways were in good shape and very consistent. The greens were what really stood out to me. They were all very consistent and putted the same way throughout the day.
Overall it was a great day to be out playing golf. The weather was good, the guys I was paired with were friendly and enjoyable, and the course was fun. I wish I would have played better but the day was enjoyable. It was awesome to be able to hang out with some fellow GKers during the day. Thank you to Johnny and Pat for putting on a fun day. I will definitely keep the Sun City West courses in my golf course rotation.

Played in the skins game on 3/22. It was good to get out and play with some GKers. We had a great day to play, the weather was perfect. The condition of the course was very good. JohnnyGk's description of the conditions in the previous review are right on the money. I'll just reiterate that the greens were excellent. They were medium fast (10.5-11). They rolled smooth & true. They were soft under foot and held good shots.

The layout of the course is simple and right in front of you. (The only exception is #14 which I'll put in the "tips" section.) It plays through a housing community but, the houses don't encroach on the course. While the course is not long, I thought some of the tougher holes were the Par 3"s. Also, I found it counter productive to try and over power the course. If you drive it past the 100 yard markers, the fairways start to get really narrow. Even though you may have a short shot, it might be a tricky lie.

Trail Ridge has a good practice range, chipping and putting areas. It's got that nice Sun City West retiree vibe. The POP is under 4 hours. The food & beverage are a great deal. I got a hotdog & a beer for under $5. The course is an all around great value. Thanks to Pat and JohnnyGK for putting together another fun outing.

Played the Sun City West Trail Ridge Course on Saturday with GK’ers in a small outing. Great time everyone during and after the round. Thanks for coming out! I found the course in great shape. Greens were running smooth and moderately fast. Fairways lush, tee boxes lush, rough half way between dormant and not dormant in decent shape. The only aspect of the course that could be improved is the bunkers. They could use some new sand but considering the costs of doing that to the low rates to play there, I’d rather they pass on the savings than embark on that kind of renovation. This was my forth time playing a Sun City West golf course and like the previous rounds, pace of play was fast, the atmosphere relaxed and service good. The Trail Ridge course, like the other Sun City West golf courses, is not your scenic desert terrain type layout. Its simply straight forward golf on a flat layout that is moderately challenging and fair. You always get a good playing condition, fast pace of play, affordable green fee, affordable food and drinks, comfortable setting and good service. For what you pay to play this course, especially during spring season, it’s a great value. I will be back out to these courses again next time in town.
