Course condition is in good to better than good right now. I read the older reviews here and didn't know what to expect as I have not been here for a couple years. Happy to report that course is playable and fun. "new" management in third year doing good job.
Greens good to better than that rolling med to slow holding lines not to undulating medium sized mostly. The cart paths are a little confusing at times (front going to 4th tee and to 7th) and the back (12th to 13th and sight line for tee shot on this par 5) Your eye sees the 14th green straight out but the hole doglegs over the right sand trap. Green keeper helped get us reacquainted. Good mix of shorter longer holes. Fairways good rough maintained and the bunkers OK with material but need TLC to fluff up imo for more consistency.
Friendly staff well stocked 19th Hole.
Out of the way course unless you live in the area. River levee, and surrounding walnut farms borders course nearby rice patties are seen driving in from east.
A fun easier track went here to build confidence to elevate my game for the more golf challenges to come this spring summer. Did that; Recommend.

I have been waiting all summer for the course to re-open. I should have waiting longer. I wanted to play now to help the new management get the course going again. The greens are absolutely TERRIBLE! They are full of weeds and have major bare spots. I can't see them recovering before next spring. The rest of the course is in okay shape but because the greens are so bad is really doesn't matter. I've played courses the same day they aerated and sanded and had a better experience.

Played River Oaks on 11/8 with a friend of mine. River Oaks is about 20 miles north of Sacramento and is in the middle of nowhere. We got there on a rainy, cool Sunday afternoon and got a rate of $44 with cart. There was literally no one out there playing and with the rain stopping, we decided to play. The starter was ready to go home but he stayed knowing he let us out. Very nice of him to do so.

The course is nice. Challenging with a nice layout. For those who have played Goose Creek in So. Calif. it has a similar look and feel. The drought has really affected this location. The score card showed a lot of water out there but the lakes were all dry so you could now actually play out of where the lakes are. If all of the lakes were filled with water, this would be a much more challenging course. Regardless, this is a fun course to play. Flat, but with a few dog legs. Very nice greens. Fairways are starting to show some winter wear but good lies if you're in the fairways. Sand traps are a combination of sand and dirt but are ok. Tee boxes have some wear but were not terrible. We had a great time and I definitely want to come back and play this course. It was worth the green fee.

I was disappointed in the overall condition of the course, especially the greens. They obviously haven't been cut in who-knows-how-long and were fairly bumpy, the fairways/rough could use an over-seeding during the growing season before it gets too hot, and the tee boxes on most holes are in sore need of some major work to get rid of the "clumpy" grass and fill in the bare spots. The course is not worth the green fees currently being charged and today reminded me all-too-much of the last time I played Southridge, over 6 years ago. I hope River Oaks doesn't go that route, because it has the capability of being a good course, but it's going to take some concerted effort to get it back up to even what it once was.

Played River Oaks in slightly more than 4 hours today with the breeze up a bit...could have been a little faster but for some slow foursomes ahead. One group had what appeared to be some ladies learning the game and this is a pretty good course for teaching someone golf, so that's ok...we weren't held up too much. Greens are slower and need a cutting, but they're holding well and it looks like they have multiple types of grass on the greens...not sure this is a good thing. Fairways are actually about the best I recall ever seeing but parts of the rough can be killer. Plenty of water on this course to test your nerves. The quality of sand in the traps/bunkers is better than it ever has been...a definite +. Great rates available at Golfnow.com.

If you join the e-mail club at the course, you can receive reduced rates along with food specials. This month the rate is $28.00 including green fee & cart with a hot dog and chips.

Played Saturday morning 2/7/09. Teed off in less than 500ft visability fog so I really can't comment on the asthetics of the first 5 holes. Overall this course is decent. I played the black tees and the par threes are great, the par fives are decent and the par fours are too short but provide a decent variety with some doglegs, forced carries and approach shots over water. The Black tee boxes were in really good shape but I'm guessing not too many people play from back there since those par threes are intimidating (11 is like 235 into breeze to a protected green). I didn't really check the other tees so I can't comment on those. As the previous poster said, the greens are SLOW but they don't look very slow so it's a little tough to get used to. When I played they rolled really nicely despite being so slow. Decent driving range and boring practice putting green. They had a nice little chipping range but it was mats only?!?! This was a first for me. The course actually did have a marshall but the only two times I saw him was when he was sitting in the cafe drinking coffee and fishing for golf balls in one of the hazards but it didn't really bother me as courses pretty much never enforce pace of play anymore. I got the round for $40 on golfnow.com which is $7 cheaper than rack rate. In my opinion, $47 is a little steep for this place but I will definitely go back if I find a decent deal.

Played a very quick round today...it's now known as RIVER OAKS and not Rio La Paz. Greens are S-L-O-W & bumpy at times. Some fairway dry spots (WATER US...PLEASE!!!) & grass on many tee boxes is actually too high, even with higher tees. Staff very courteous and their new clubhouse is finished...nice. Good value if you go thru Golfnow.com.

Not a difficult course, but if you play from appropriate tees, a pleasant, fair, challenge.
