Teed it up Sunday with Mattias, roarksown1 and kassper7 at Angeles National Golf Club on round the came together pretty quickly at a $60 rate. Good time!

The conditions of the golf course other than the greens being in excellent shape (fast, holding shots and smooth – with exception to some small slits that did not impact the roll of the ball much), was very dormant with thin lies. Looking back at the history of reviews this time of year it seems to always be that way. Add to the thin lies wetness you’ve got on your hands some very challenging conditions to hit the ball flush unless you are very good at compressing your iron shots. At first it was bothering and frustrating. Then I took what the golf course was giving me, the ability run shots from all over the place. I took a page out of rob1563 in Vegas’s book and used putter from all around the green complexes with much success. Rather than try hitting perfect wedges, I opted to hit low releasing shots. I ended up having a blast with it. Made me play the golf course as a links layout on many occasions. Had to get creative in ways I don’t normally do. What a difference the golf course was in terms of lushness the last time I played it in October. I believe most golfers will be very disappointed with the thin lies but very happy with the greens.

Great service all day from bag drop, proshop, range, marshals and on course food & beverage service. Not many golfers out there due to cold temps so we played at a relaxed pace. I’ll be back out here to play again in the Spring.

Fairways are totally dormant, totally straw. Little to no pad under the ball and hard as rocks even after decent rain. You have to nip it just right or else you'll be skulling or fatting them all day here.

Rough is generally dormant and more or less nonexistent. There are sprouts of some secondary growth popping through here and there and along with some painting (!) of the rough on 1. 10 & 18, the effect is sort of a reverse Palm Springs in winter look, with dormant fairways partially framed by tinged green rough.

Greens had a pretty serious slit cut treatment on all of them which didn't appear to affect speed which was slick, although it did contribute to a few bobbles here and there. Tee positions were all on the edges and very tough no doubt to keep as much play away from the treatment. (Sand and tees both fine.)

Always wonder how this place survives when it's mainly empty on a Sunday at prime time. With rack rates at 130 and discount prices still at 103, I can see why. (I paid 80 on a hot deal tt from gn and that is more than it's worth.)

Played AG yesterday with 12 of us to end the year. We teed off right on time and finished in 4.5 hours. Everyone enjoyed themselves however scoring was difficult. With fast greens and tight lies being the norm, accompanied by a little chilly wind, bogeys we common. The fairways are dormant right now but very playable, the tee boxes are always level, and the greens were real nice and held crisp hit shots. Also great was the $55 senior rate given on-line. The bunkers had good sand but lies were inconsistent due to the lack of raking by players.
We did experience a few problems though, the range was sanded and all chewed up and after 9 holes on a chilly morning the snack bar didn't have coffee made. How does that happen? Also, we all wanted to have lunch together and found that the restaurant is now closed on Mondays. Oh well, still a nice way to end 2018!! Happy New Year.

We played this course, yesterday (Dec. 13). It's very sharp looking, and it has a country club feel. The clubhouse is very nice. The borders of the tees and fairways are handsomely accented. I love the attention to detail all around the course.

Now, let's dispense with the niceties :). This is one mean, rough, tough golf course. It plays every bit as tough as the rating and slope indicate. The course has a tendency to be quite intimidating. When you look out from the tees, they have a tendency to make you tug on your collar a bit. The fairways are tight as a drum throughout the course. If you don't like to play from tight lies, then this is not the course for you. The approach shots are often even more daunting than the tee shots. There are large bunkers that guard the greens, and the pins are often tucked behind them. Playing safe is no guarantee of two-putting on the undulating, fast, and downright intimidating greens. If you're off the green, you'd better have exquisite touch with your wedges. I practice on my short game, and I still found myself feeling a bit overwhelmed, at times.

There were two things that were very disappointing to me. On every green, before it was my turn to putt, I could easily fix four to six divots. This is not a reflection of the staff and maintenance crew. I don't think I saw anybody in any group fixing a divot throughout the day. The second item that really bothered me was the bunkers. At some point, over the past 5-6 years, I've noticed that my fellow golfers aren't that interested in raking bunkers, and this course is no different. It's such a shame to see. These bunkers have excellent sand, and it's a pleasure (?) to play from them when you happen to find one. You can see that the crews take care of the bunkers...and folks just don't maintain them. Too bad.

In closing, be sure that your game is in order before taking up this challenge. It's not for the feint of heart. Practice putting on the kitchen floor and maybe go hit some wedges at your local miniature golf course, beforehand. Good luck!

Stopped here in the way home. Was told I could go right out. Played in 3 H. Fairways are totally dormant, so you get great roll on them. Had no issues with lies, all round. Tee boxes are all clean and level. Sand traps (in 2) were very playable. As I have said before, no real rough to deal with but plenty of OB in the desert (or environmental area) outside most of the fairways, in addition to some water hazards. Greens were all in great shape and chipped/putted with a lot of speed. The customer service was great. The senior rate here is comparable to Coyote Hills and Black Gold, so if you like those 2, you should find this course to your liking? Will be back in the spring, for sure.

Played today in 3.5 H. Course is in great shape. Tee boxes excellent. Fairways had great lies, great roll and plenty wide enough to avoid going OB. Great to play a S CA course finally that provides roll out. Bunkers (in one) and not an issue. Rough is called "environmental area" and you can not enter. Even comes up on the GPS if you get too close. Greens were just great. Chipped/putted just fine all round. Customer service is excellent at this course. Highly recommended.

I love the layout, POP- 3 1/2 hours tee boxes level and lush, fairways to me fantastic, some may find them thin, just hit down on the ball. There is no rough, hazard, and the greens were perfect, but I’d hate to see them in the summer, midday. If you can get a deal I highly recommend this course.

Had a meeting at Angeles National on Tuesday that pleasantly turned into 15 holes of golf. Been a while since I’ve played it. I was also curious how it looked after the brush fire damage from last year. Have to say looks even better. I love how they’ve incorporated wood chips, gravel and landscaping (lots of blue agaves which I dig) into the layout. Plus it’s nice to get a free drop from those wood chips bordering some of the fairways ;)

Golf course was in great shape for this time of year. The fairways are light green, excellent coverage, a few thin spots, firm and dry. Which is to be expected. I talked with the superintendent Matt before the round and found out the course in built on very rocky terrain where they only have about 6 inches of top soil. What this means is the fairways roots can only go so deep and doing a deep fairways aeration is impossible as the rocks will break the machine. However they do 3 shallow holes aerations on the fairways per year to keep them healthy. I thought they played very well and enjoyed the extra roll.

As for the greens, really good shape, fun, mostly smooth, not as firm and fast as some of my previous visits but I expect them to speed up moving forward due to coming cooler temps. It’s a hot climate so makes sense to not cut them down yet. My favorite aspect of Angeles National are the green complexes. They are very big yet diabolical. They allow you to get creative with all the contours to play a large variety of shots. On every hole you can find a spot where you could enjoy practicing your short game for hours. Makes the golf course a blast.

Bunkers are well groomed but need more sand.

Rough, there really is not much. Through the green the golf course is pretty much fairway height. Definitely puts more demand on the tee shots and approaches to keep it in play.

As for the views and ambiance of Angeles National, love it. Yes there is some freeway noise but that becomes unnoticeable, at least for me, after a couple holes. The backdrops of Angeles National Forest Mountains are stunning. You feel like you are on a desert golf course at times. The clubhouse is beautiful. You know you’re at a high end golf course from the level of service and amenities that immediately greet you. They have an excellent driving range and practice facilities.

Played this AM before a huge tournament. Played with a member and we finished in 2.5 H. Course is in very nice shape at the moment. Things were a little wet when we started, but once the sun came up, fairways and greens got very fast. Tee boxes were all clean and level. Fairways are very playable. Bunkers were all clean and had been raked and no complaints. Greens (after being cut) played very nice (not overly fast) but many of them still had noticeable (though repaired) ball marks (some did effect putting). Not much rough, but there is a lot of desert or as they call it "environmental area", which cannot be entered, should you hit into it. Customer service excellent at all levels. Very good design, with a good variety of holes. A very nice course (IMO) that one should play at least once?
