Despite all the negative comments about this course over the years, I still like to get out here every once in a while for a change. With their new June promotion, it makes the cost very reasonable. ($26w/cart) The course has never been in pristine condition, but then I don't expect it to be. There are a number of good holes on the course, the staff is always accommodating, and rarely do I have an issue getting out early, so pace of play not an issue. Yes, there are a few "bad" holes, and the layout is kind of "quirky", but it's a quiet, old-school type course which reminds me of the way things used to be. While I would not choose to make a steady diet of his course, it's a nice change of pace. Greens rolled decently, albeit too slow for my taste. Fairways were hit or miss, some good lies, some awful. As long as you don't expect too much or take it too seriously, for the money, you can enjoy yourself here.

Have to agree in large part with the last review. Not the greatest course around, but I really enjoy it. The tee boxes are in great shape. The tees are moved up right now, so the course plays just a little short. The greens look great other than most of them have this odd lined marking on them- does not affect the surface. The greens are hard, and can be fast, but playing in the AM they are wet enough. Approach shots that may normally "stick" roll out a little bit here. The staff working the early mornings are wonderful! Here's the thing- the fairways are the rootiest I have ever been around. There are so many old pine and other trees, and their roots run well into the fairways at times. The fairways are green right now, and a bit firm, but the lies are ok, as long as you don't end up next to one of many roots. The course itself is as the prior post said- very linksy, and if you want to practice bump & runs and long running shots, the course is good for that (as long as your ball doesn't bounce off a root...). The best parts are the rates, the personnel, the tee boxes and the greens. If the folks running the course could just do something to thin out some of the roots, then maybe people, especially high handicappers who might end up in the trees, would enjoy more. This course has a great warm up offering, with a putting green, pitching green, small pitch/chip target green, and a driving range. The atmosphere is very quiet. It's just something about the roots that gets me., especially when walking.

I'm beginning to think that two of the best things Azusa Greens has produced over the years are LPGA player Lizette Salas and the creative metaphors that are employed in reviews that attempt to capture the feel of the place: including a hybrid love child, a problematic, tempestuous past relationship, and a trailer park trophy wife among others. For whatever reason, the image that came to mind for me this time around is comedian Mary Feldman's character "Igor" in the movie Young Frankenstein when, in response to a well meaning, if indelicate question, he responds "What hump?". He embodies a sweet, naive, eagerness to please that ignores what others might see as an aesthetic challenge. I needed a place to play mid morning Saturday with my buddy, who had a late afternoon business meeting, and so was looking for low traffic and a decent price. Of course I was browsing GK while considering this. I like a change of pace and noticed I hadn't been to Azusa in a little over two years. I also noticed there had only been three reviews since my report of that round in 2014, with the most recent one being July of 2015. That decided it for me, since I figured someone needed to get their boots on the ground for more current intel. There are also some nice people working there trying to make a living and keep a golf course going and I figured they needed a little GK love along with our green fee. The strengths and weaknesses haven't changes much. Pretty level tee boxes, fairways that are a mix of anything from mostly tight lies to some nice setups to hardpan and brown patches — much more of the former two than the latter. I seem to have decent lies in the fairway all day, but definitely a mixed bag — and you will get a lot of rollout. The frequently long and generally straight fairways mostly look fairly level from a distance and there are no hills to speak of, but closer inspection reveals a linksey quality of humps and shallow swales on some them that will give your ball the occasional unexpected bounce or redirection. These features, along with the cart paths will frequently give your cart ride the kidney-stimulating feel of off-roading. We had some rain earlier that day, so there was some dampness in the bunkers, but the sand quality was really pretty good. Some of the greens had visual evidence of recent aeration, but none of them had any performance issues. They were on the quick side, ran true, and getting above the hole on some of the them meant a tricky downhill speed calculation. I saw one, isolated, rough patch on one green and otherwise thought they were fun, challenging, firm and pretty clean. The rough, and many of the areas adjacent to fairways represented the answer to the question "What hump?" — extensive areas of big dirt piles and dead plant matter, undeveloped and non-landscaped stretches that give those parts of the course an unsightly, low-rent vibe. Throw in the occasional sketchy character sauntering around the course fringes and there is no confusion about having died and gone to Riviera. The view of the nearby mountains is dramatic, but compromised somewhat by the mining operations going on nearby. The course has a funky fourth hole but is generally straight forward, with it's defense against the average golfer on many holes being length. The cart girl came around numerous times, the front desk and cart guys were friendly and helpful. The clubhouse bar view of the tenth tee and fairway is kind of cool and, while the grass driving range can be on the lumpy side, the general complex for practicing one’s short game is pretty complete and above average. The course was not overly busy and we got around in just about four hours as a twosome. Oh, and they fixed up the original and formerly decrepit signage out front. Was it a well conditioned high end course in a choice area? Nope. Did I come away feeling a little "dirty"? Yup. Did I enjoy it? Yeah, I kinda did.

Played my sept-annual round here friday before 4th of July. Azuza greens is the love child of a municipal golf course and an abandoned dirt parking lot. Not so much designed as inserted into the left over spaces in a semi-residential semi-business park/strip mine. It reminds one of the most difficult person they ever dated. Fun when everything is fine - terrible when things are a little bit off. How so? Tee boxes - ok. Actually, not great, but hey - you get to put a tee in the ground so how much can you complain? Fairways, pretty good - better than ever for this place and impressive at a time when other courses can't water enough to keep things green. Greens? really great. The perfect speed and smoothness - really impressed. Oh! What? you are a 17 handicapper like me and don't always hit fairways and greens? Well then prepare for the true Azuza Greens experience. Huge tufts of grass with holes and hardpan lie just centimeters off the fairway. Miss the green? Your ball likely has been swallowed up my a giant high-lipped sand trap or worse - kicked violently away from the green into an area consisting of bad lies and even worse lies. Rocky hardpan, silly railroad ties, weeds - the guy I was playing with hit a ball that hit the green and bounced beyond a bit - only to find himself resting on the flat trunk on a recently felled tree - surrounded by 3 inch deep sawdust. Each hole visually painful - low income apartments, tattered and rusted protective fencing, pockmarked palm and heavy pine trees waiting to bounce your ball into federal prison. My only comfort is knowing it will be 5 years until I play here again - just to see - how Azuza Greens is coming along.

My annual round at Azusa Greens for the B-day. Only play here on my b-day and has been my tradition since I picked up the game. Usually I give it bad reviews, but they actually have made some progress in certain areas. Primarily the greens and tee boxes.
Greens are nice, smooth, fast speed. Almost wouldnt believe it belonged to this course. Blue tee boxes as well, very well kept, although the white and red tee boxes are not in the best condition, and on par with the rough and fairways here.
Starting with fairways, still mainly like thin rough. Not as bad as before, but definitely not a smooth ride on a cart, still will make your drink spill all over. Some good patches and very green, just very thin and many bare areas. Rough is very bad. Lots of dirt areas with small circle patches of green stuff, that isnt nice to hit off either. Therefore par 3's from blue tee boxes are good, approach shots from fairways and rough arent the best.
Bunkers, the many I were in, were not bad at all, fluffy and you will be successful with a typical good bunker shot.
Again, not the best course, especially the fairways, although lots of progress on the greens and tee boxes. A sure improvement from last year.

Azusa Greens Country Club gets a lot of play and after you experience your very own 6 hour weekend round you'll ask...why? I think it's because Azusa Greens is like the trophy wife of the trailer park; when the pickin's are few Mrs. Johnson starts to look good and with Azusa Greens there aren't any other courses nearby other than Rancho Duarte's 9 holes. Old timers will recall the old dirt cart paths that crossed the fairways at 200, 150 and 100 yards. When you looked down the fairways back then it looked less like a fairway and more like a construction zone. You still can't accuse Azusa Greens of being pretty but compared to those days it has improved substantially, with a somewhat spruced up front of the clubhouse added to the mix. But like getting implants in TJ, it can only do so much for appearances and Azusa Greens is still a hard hat blue collar course with OK conditions and unmemorable holes. I came back after several years of not visiting this place but it is much the same. It winds through an industrial complex, some beat up old apartments, a school yard and some open pit mines and maybe one nicer home neighborhood but that's about it. Some nice views of the mountains but then you also get a good look at the Vulcan mining company destroying the mountains! If any locals praise this place and are upset with me....you need to get out more. I will acknowledge this however; it is a great place for young kids to practice and play with a pretty large range, chipping, bunker practice area and I do recognize the great USC and LPGA player Lizette Salas survived this place. So kids, like skiing or snowboarding at Mt Baldy, you do experience every possible bad lie and situation here and you are bound to improve and maybe end up a pro. Oh and the breakfast burrito was quite good ...... but not good enough for me to come back.

Having played Azusa once before, while I didn't rule it out entirely, I was going to need some incentive to go back. Basically, the greens are pretty nice. The fairways thin, with tight lies—although not as many actual bare areas as I was expecting, and they were green—probably due to the recent rain. Bunkers are good and the rough is non-existant more often than not. Tees were generally flat with enough coverage and those not level were not terribly off. It's a long course from the blues for a mid-handicapper like myself, so that is the main challenge. Generally flat, most holes are straight or only gently dog-legged, tree lined, and there are definitely a few tight driving holes. Bottom line is that it is a playable, very basic layout, that is not overly exciting and needs more TLC, but it has it's place. It was probably in a bit better shape than the first time I played it. The staff are nice and helpful and I confess I want to see them succeed here. They also have an above average short game area for pitching / chipping / bunker shots as well as a couple of practice greens. So the incentive for returning? Per their website, they have a Winter special of $10 on weekdays and $15 on weekends to walk after 2:00 pm. When my buddy called ahead to ask about it and book, they didn't seem to be aware of it, but it's on their site and they honored it with no hassle. We got out a little after 2:00 and finished with just enough light to track our final tee shots. We enjoyed it and no question we got our money's worth. Knowing what to expect from this course helps.

Played Azusa Greens on Saturday Oct. 13. Haven't played here in a while but the previous reviews are spot on. The greens were great! I was surprised. Pretty fast, smooth, and firm. They are aerifying the week of Oct. 21 but it sounds like this improvement is sustainable. The rest of the course is not in great shape. Fairways are OK but the rough is really chunky dirt and gravel. The had most of the tee markers moved way up to the reds. It looks like some tees had recently been resodded, but others were not. I guess they are trying to give the tee boxes a break but it's a short course as it is. No need to make it shorter.

This is my home course. I shoot high 70's low 80's here. I would say the greens have gotten a lot better over the last few years. The bunkers are in very good condition throughout the course. I play here at least once a week so many of the employees are friendly to me and I believe they are also friendly to new guys as well. The rough is either chunky grass or dirt. The fairways here are pretty good. Overall it is a good course to play. I also am on their junior team they have. The range balls are bad but if you bring your own shag bag it is a VERY GOOD place to practice short game. Thanks if you read it.
