Having to be in the area later in the AM, decided to play here. Thought I would use Weber's definition: "it's inexpensive basic golf, which sometimes is all I'm looking for." I looked on the site last night, no maintenance posted. Checked in and was told "doing the greens - front yesterday back today and you play the front and if you want 18, you play it twice." Guess they don't wish to use GK? The guy was pleasant, but it was not what I wanted to hear @ 6:15 AM. So I asked the price? "$20 with cart for 18." Decided to play and got right out. I actually found some of the fairways with decent coverage/green grass (kikyu/bermuda) but not all fairways had coverage and the lies were thin for the most part. Some fairways had large bare spots (4 and 5) and I swear they were there when I played some years ago? Tee boxes were OK and were mowed and tee friendly. The rough is hit/miss and needs attending to, soon please. Not in any bunkers, but they did not look good? Of course there were large holes and sand on the greens, so putting was nothing to be happy with. But they looked like they might have been pretty good prior to aerating? Old course layout that no doubt at one time was pretty good? Personally I would have preferred to play all 18, even with green sanding. But this course has outlived its time for me, but serves a useful purpose for those in Azusa and the area no doubt.

Played here 8/10/19 with a 1:00Pm tee time. Played with a friend from the blues and the two of us finished in 3.5 hours. Green fee was $27.00. Now that price is about right for this course but morning prime time is $40 which is way over priced for the conditions here.

Greens- were real slow but rolled true, very to little ball marks and are the best part of the course 7/10

Fairways- Were way too thin, 50% of the time you're hitting off hard pack dirt. Lots of weeds and on some fairways good coverage 6/10

Rough- Terrible- non existent on this course. You're either on a fairway or you're hitting in between trees with pine needles and rocks. 3/10

Tee Boxes- Not too good. very few were level, a lot of damage. Front 9 was much better than back. On hole #14 i was hitting off pure dirt there was zero grass on the tee box. 3/10

Sand- Fluffy and not bad, I was in 1 trap and able to get my club under the ball and out. 8/10

No water on this course and no cart girl. Check in was convenient and starter was nice.

Left work early on a Friday. I now work in Azusa so I thought I would give AG a try. I have not played here in a long long time. Previous reviews are pretty much spot on. Tees... OK with some uneven spots. Fairways... Very poor. Finding a good lie is next to impossible. The ground is so hard under the grass (and often there is not a lot of grass). Rough... Not much different than the fairways. Bunkers... Not in any but they looked ok. Greens... Very nice. Rolled med-fast and pretty smooth. If this course was in better shape is would be a very pleasant place to play. It's short but being that it's a par 70 and there are only 2 par fives it plays a little longer than the 6100 yards would indicate. And it is pretty tight off the tee so you have to think a little bit before going with driver.

Took advantage of the birthday deal and paid $10 cart fee to play on Sunday before the Rams / Saints game. Got out around 8:15-ish and got 12 holes in before leaving @ 11:30. The greens were in good shape — reasonably clean and quick. As far as the rest of the course: same as it ever was. Specifically, the fairways were about 10% bare or hardpan. While there were stretches of green grass and normal, if tight lies, there were also areas of extensive areas with tighter, white/blond dormant grass lies. The recent rains gave the surface an underlying softness and I'd say the net result on those surfaces was about like a driving range matt. I don't take a lot of divot, so I found it decent to play, but the tight lies and soft underneath could lead to fat shots if your swing path is steeper. Clean shots meant a good amount of rollout. The rest was business as usual: generally OK tee boxes, funky and variable rough, and firm but playable bunkers. I don't come here much, but I have check at least once a year or so. I don't recommend going out of your way, but I still enjoy myself here because it's golf, I have reasonable expectations and an idea of the challenges of this course. It's well down the regular list but I don't want to see another course go away. If we get a few more significant episodes of winter rain to bring the fairways along, I would be curious to see what the place looks like in late Spring when grass has passed dormancy and started to fill in. With the prices and deals they usually offer, it could make it a very nice bargain round.

Looking online for a mid-morning opening for last Sunday, 6/24, things were a little tight with the exception of Azusa Greens, which seemed very open. The reservations on any site can sometimes be misleading as to how busy a course is, but when I got to there it was, in fact, wide open. While AG isn't the hot choice, it is usually serviceable enough. Since we can't complain about courses disappearing if we don't support them, I make a point to play out here at least once in a great while. It may not be great golf, but being a golf slut myself, I don't think there is such thing as bad golf. The course itself was, in what I consider, average conditions for this place. Tees were generally level overall, but a little lumpy and chewed up on occasion — typically able to find a combination of grass and even footing. The fairways tended to run firm and on the tighter side with about 80 - 90% green coverage. The rest was scattered areas of browned out hardpan and even some exposed dirt. I hit into one of these spots in the middle of the second fairway and just played it as GUR. The bunkers had a heavier grained sand, but were clean enough and groomed. The areas around the green seemed to get more water and were good for chipping. The greens themselves here are more than decent — reasonably clean, receptive, medium quick, and frequently had some challenging slopes and contours. The rough here tends to be minimal and a bit of a crap shoot. Playability not withstanding, over time they have cleaned up many areas that used to be more unsightly. That said, the armpit of the course is where the third green, fourth tee box, fifth green, and sixth tee box meet on a corner of the course. Centrally located at that corner junction is a large, slag heap of dirt, rocks, decaying palms and vegetation — on this day set off with a couple of blue trash dumpsters for a splash of color. Add to this is the fact that the fourth hole itself is a short, tight, gnarled excuse of a hole whose fairway is appropriate for combat exercises. I choose to acknowledge but otherwise ignore the slag heap, and accept the fourth hole for the nasty little challenge that it is. Beyond this little Devil's Triangle of a spot, the rest of the course is fine, including three, five and six. Some of the surrounds are a bit low rent, but the proximity to the mountains provides some nice vistas, often framed by trees on appropriately aligned fairways. The experience you have here has a lot to do with how you choose to focus your attention. The guy in the clubhouse as well as the starter were all friendly and helpful, with the former getting me a senior discount early. I was walking/carrying as a single. The group in front was about four holes out. The closest anyone got behind me was one full hole — briefly, around the 10th hole, when a group restarted behind me after stopping for lunch. I got around in something over 3.5 hours. It's golf, I had a good time, and any frustrations were from my play and not the environment. But then, I'm easy.

I know - I know ! Azusa Greens, never gets a decent review, and I understand why, BUT, the greens here are very nice, by far the best part of the course. Fairways were a mixed bag, some great areas, some poor areas. The rough however was poor at best. Bunkers were generally OK, except none were raked.

$25 with cart is a fair price to pay. First off and we finished in a little under 2 1/2 hours with no rushing. (Good thing because a ladies shotgun was going off just as we finished at 8am) Would have been nice to be told about that, because had we played even a tad slower, we would have been caught in the middle of it !

Not too fond of the front nine, but I really enjoy the back nine. Despite the suspect conditioning issues, I have to admit I enjoyed a pleasant quick early morning round under perfect weather.

After reviewing the last group of reviews and having never played here, I decided to take Weber's advice, which jumped out at me, from reading the reviews (As long as you don't expect too much or take it too seriously, for the money, you can enjoy yourself here) and give it a go. He is spot on. But alas, I did not enjoy myself, though I tried. My first impression of the course, is that it has a great layout and wonderful potential? But that is were my impression ends. The tee boxes are all beaten up. The fairways have grass growing, but they are hard like lanes in a bowling alley (and desperate for water). There is no rough. The trees are overgrown and need trimming. Bunkers are not filled with good sand. But would you believe, the greens are acceptable? Why do courses do this? Why do they spend money/time on the greens and not the rest of the course? I wish the golfers who play this course in the future and on a regular basis, enjoy themselves. For me? It was one and done.

This report is going to assume you read a little deeper into this thread for the background provided by earlier reviews as reference. It had been about a year since my last visit here, and my buddy and I went out as a twosome Friday, 10.7, a bit after 1:00pm, taking advantage of an email deal that included a small warm-up bucket, cart, hot dog and soft drink, for $19.95. I can't think of a course that throws out as many specials as Azusa Greens, so in that respect they are regular source of bargain rounds while trying to get your business. With AG, the question is always whether it's worth it. In particular, after seeing the results of the wet winter on numerous other courses, and not having been here in a while, the special made the decision to revisit the place easy enough. I think the course conditions, overall, are a bit improved. The tee boxes were generally either level or reasonably close to it. The coverage was good I don't recall ever having to hunt for a green patch. The fundamental contours of the fairways haven't changed. As far as coverage, you will see a regular distribution of some brown patches, but excluding the those patches, the fairways were green and I thought the lies were tight but in a good way. There was some cushion, the ball the ball usually presented well, and you got a good amount of rollout. I observed most of the browned fairway patches were similarly playable, vs. being hardpan or dirt. With some lusher exceptions, the rough here tends towards random grasses, dry, scrubby areas, and dirt. This is a non factor for me since I figure the rough is, well… rough. And, while far from landscaped, I noticed that they have cleared out a lot of the piles of dead fronds and plant material in the rough that had previously given the course a bit of a trashy edge in spots. There is a definite, if subtle, overall improvement to the general look of the course as a result. As an aside, I noticed the same improvement on the driving range, which used to look like a humped landfill site. You are still hitting out to predominantly dirt and dry grass, but it has been leveled out and cleaned up — and you are hitting from grass range that matches the fairways. Bunkers varied from a bit crusty to beach sandy and the grooming was similarly inconsistent, but mostly OK. The greens are the highlight. Remembering the 17th as an exception, (it had some significant fungus-like patches) they were generally clean, had a minimum of ball marks and ran at nice medium quick pace or better. As good or better than most of the munis I've been on lately. The surrounds provided good chipping opportunities, with the fairways being tighter and more challenging in that regard. Grading on the curve that "it is what it is", I wasn't disappointed. The people who work here are pleasant and they were flexible about when we actually started. The server at the turn was nice and the hot dog was good sized and tasty. There has been some cleanup and the course is playing well. This course is like the sibling who didn't get the looks — has to work harder to get your attention and develop a more interesting personality. If Jimmy McGill was a golf course, he might be this place. While I still won't get over here too often, it was a good deal, I had a good time, and I like to think it won't be a year before the next visit.

P.O.P Was outstanding only because we had no one in front of us. Greens were in good shape and tee boxes were ok. Fairways were green but very very spotty. Dirt patches in some areas and grass in others. Sand traps were well kept and clean. Good sand in them. The course was good except for the fairways. If they spent money fixing their fairways this course would be a $60 course and they could do pretty well.
