What a come back. As I have said in the past I play here every week and the course is in great shape. The Greenskeepers have work hard on the course to get it back in very playable shape from tee to green (good job!!!!). Played Friday (5/4/2103) in less then 4 hours too.

This course should close down for about 2 months and get it together. How they can charge $46 during the week is robbery. Need to keep cars off the fairways during the bowl games and need a ground crew because this one is awful. Had 1 lush lie in the fairway all day. We had 2 foursomes most are single digit golfers and we were happy to leave. we played great tee to green but the greens were a joke. Need more water to start. When you make 4 putts at a hole and the ball rests near the cup then "trickles" back 30 ft tells you there is a problem. Wedges barely held on the greens. Chip shots would not hold and just roll off. Plus the fact you are usually chipping from "ruts" all around the green. I cant believe they have a "city championship" here still. I used to play here in high school during the 80's and it was a great pair of courses. I do not think I will come back. You are penalized for hitting the center of the fairway by having either a lie with little grass or your ball would find a rut with hard pan dirt under it. Sand traps need sand very thin. I have an awesome short game being a scratch golfer and this was impossible to putt and chip to.

I have play Brookside at least two times a week for years and since the USC/UCLA game this place is in the worst shape I have EVER seen it. Greens and t-boxes are good but the FAIRWAYS are thin, patchy and sandy:-( you name it. The only reason I play here is because it is so close and I only pay $16.00 for course 2 and $18.00 for course 1 (which is in the same BAD shape). Play Santa Anita or Griffith Park, they're in better shape (They don't park cars on them).

Well, there are bad ideas and then there's playing Brookside on a Saturday. Yikes! I knew it would be a long day, but it seemed like mass chaos out there today. 11:32 tee time as a single (ezlinks, $30, hard to pass up). My group teed off just after 12:00 (#1 course looked even more backed up). Barely finished with just enough light around 5:20, though it seemed even slower than that. With the pace we had, I was actually just relieved to finish the round.

Service was disorganized. Course was disheveled. Overall experience pretty disappointing. The previous review pretty well describes the conditions from tee to green. Not very good right now. A few little patches of green grass here and there, but most of fairways and rough are pretty ugly. Patchy, thin, dead, torn up, whatever you want to call it, it was definitely not looking good. But I guess when people will still come out in droves and still pay good money no matter what shape the course is in, why bother keeping it up? I tend to cut courses a little more slack in winter, but this was the most beat-up course I've seen in quite a long time.

I will say the bunkers had pretty good sand and greens were in fairly nice shape. With the delay in starting, I had a lot of time to practice putting, but it backfired on me. The practice green was slow and soft. The real greens (at least on #2) were firm, fast and very hard to hold, so it took me awhile to readjust. But overall the greens were definitely better taken care of than the rest of the course this winter.

Glad I only paid $30 instead of the $60 (with cart) they were charging most people. Otherwise, I would have posted a really negative review : )

Walked 18 today. Course is in fair shape. Best part are greens, running at 8.5. Fairways, and tee boxes are in average conditions. Many holes are getting work done and tee boxes are being leveled.... Continue »

Walked 18 today. Course is in fair shape. Best part are greens, running at 8.5. Fairways, and tee boxes are in average conditions. Many holes are getting work done and tee boxes are being leveled. Sand traps were ok condition. Course is short and average challenging. $31 to walk is pricey. Will only play this course because my client likes to play it.

Played 8/31 as a 2some. $29 special (with cart) through GolfNow for a 12:40pm tee time. Although we ran into the 3some in front of us a few times, it only took us slightly over 3 hours to play. Pace of play was simply fantastic. Fairways and tee boxes were mediocre, and the greens were less than ideal. Lots of ball marks and dry patches. The buddy that I played with told me that Course #1 greens were much better when he played the day before. For the money and the pace, it was hard to beat.

Through the green the course is dormant and winter conditions exist. Fairways and rough are thin. Tee boxes are thin too for the most part and one or two have been re-sodded. Greens are about average for muni golf but they track decently with medium pace. Sand was fluffy and in good condition throughout.

The real issue is with the tree damage from the wind storm. The felled and damaged trees have certainly altered the look - and perhaps in a few cases the character - of the course. Big trees are gone from the right side of 2 & 3 which changes those tee shots and allows for errant tee balls to still see the green - previously, misses on that side of those holes were penalized. The damage gets mo extensive the further down the course you go. I suspect the narrower canyon towards the end of the arroyo funneled the winds and made them stronger. For instance, there are a number of characterful trees gone or severely damaged along the arroyo side of 11 fairway. And 13 has lost a number of big pines on the left that were penal to hooked tee shots. Throughout the course there are vistas that were previously not there due to the loss of trees.

It's quite sad to see. Most of the small debris is gone but there are a lot of large stumps still lying around and clearly a lot of damaged trees that still need surgery. Given that trees were one of the main defenses on this course, i think it does now play a bit different in places.
