Short review. Played #2 Monday, off at @12:15 as a twosome and done a little after 4:00. Gorgeous day, little wind. Some beat up and grassless areas on fairways near the on-course parking entrances, but generally the fairways were in good shape. The greens were mostly OK and on the quick side, however a number of them had some kind of fungus that created bare, lumpy and spotty areas. Bunkers were good, more firm than soft, but not overly so—except for some random incidences of damp sand. Tee boxes mostly very good and the rough was fine. In summary, less than perfect, but generally good conditions.

Played Sunday morning, 9-28 at 916 am, in a threesome. There was only a twosome in front of us, and I think the recently aerated greens caused the low turnout. As a result, we zipped through the round in 4 hours, with no one coming behind us for the entire round. This was my second time on #2, and I found the course overall to be in decent, playable condition. One exception was the bunker I was in on the 10th hole -- completely hardpan and I couldn't get out with my marginal sand skills for the life of me. Also, the fairways were spotty on the first few holes but overall, they were ok. The greens were hardly perfect (ignoring the sand) but I can see them being decent in the next few weeks. Overall, at just over 6000 yards, it's a straight forward course with decent views of the San Gabriels. It's worth the price especially if you get the discounted rate (I got it for $43).

I was amazed at all the Bermuda grass and perhaps other types of grass encroaching and sprouting up in the greens. The greens were not good at all. They are slow now. On a downhiller it was very easy to leave it short. That was something that never happened out here. The rest of the course was only ok. The conditions make the $31 to walk price way too much. Despite it not being too crowded I found the pace to be rather slow. I have become so fed up with the pace that Americans play their golf courses now that I 1. just don't play much anymore 2. when I do I bring a book or newspaper to read while I wait and wait 3. I practice some yoga poses on the tee box or in the fairway. NAMASTE!

I buy a monthly pass for $135.00 a month that let me play once a day Monday to Friday (good price), but I think I'm not going to buy one next month or ever. Both courses greens stink!!!! And the rest of the course isn't in good shape. They water the hell out of the course in the early am so much that the water pools up and makes little lakes in the low spots?

Checking off another course from the list of courses I haven't played. I have always been skeptical of this place, especially considering that they park cars here every other weekend during football season, but was surprised at the course conditions considering there was a big concert last weekend. Now, don't let that fool you. I was surprised they weren't WORSE than they already were. Course isn't in terrible shape, just bleh. Tee boxes were in fair to poor condition. Only the 16th was looking really good. Most others had brown/bare spots or had been heavily sanded over. Fairways were hit or miss. I don't remember having a bad lie, but there were plenty of brown spots around. About a 65/35 ratio. What's weird is that the 1st & 18th fairways were aerated but nothing else (maybe something to do with Rose Bowl parking?) Rough was better than average. Always good when it affects your shot (unlike most courses where it is completely dead/brown). Traps were the best part of the course. A nice layer of sand with enough to get a good chunk & run. Greens however, were the worst part. Bermuda is really infiltrating these greens & affects everything. It was like playing somewhere like Florida & trying to read the grain. In places without the longer, stickier Bermuda, the ball would just take off, but as soon as it hit a patch, it would either bounce in three different directions off line or slow dramatically. Hard to get a good feel all day. On one three footer my ball bounced off line three times!! Just frustrating to have that shaggy stuff everywhere, as well as TONS of ballmarks on some greens. I really liked the layout, & like Rancho Park, could picture this course in its heyday hosting LA Opens & what not. It makes you think on a lot of shots. Some minor issues of mine but were out of my control were all the striping for event parking ALL OVER the course & the Rose Bowl blaring music all day preparing for the concert tomorrow. I know they've had to really cut back their water use, but I probably won't come back unless I get a good deal or when they're better looking in the spring after football season.

Got out yesterday with a buddy, 7/24 for a $13 (walking) twilight special, paired up with another twosome. Been a month or so since the most recent reviews here and they were pretty severe, so I felt compelled to input. Pace was a little slow and teeing off around 5:00, we had time to get in 12 holes (the front nine, and then 16 thru 18) and didn't cross the road so, technically, this review is not complete. The last of a junior tournament was wrapping up on the course so the tee markers had been removed and, after the fourth hole, so were the flags (leaving the sticks.) We teed off at the monuments. Having the luxury of not being constrained by markers meant being guaranteed a nice level, green spot, but the tees were in very nice shape overall anyway. The fairways were generally green, firm and fast. There were some occasional burnt, thinner spots, but not bad. I thought the tighter than usual lies (as opposed to thin) were fine and I enjoyed the rollout I was getting on my shots. Greens weren't cosmetically perfect, but functionally I thought they were very good—rolling pretty true and on the quick. They are on the small side but interesting. I was only in one bunker, but it was nicely groomed and a touch on the firm side. Consistent with the fairways, the rough was generally on the short side and quite playable, with occasional exceptions where it would cost a shot to get repositioned. There was a big soccer game at the Rose Bowl last week, with the attendant parking on the course, and I can't say I saw any significant evidence or effect of it at all. I'm not a huge fan of the course and don't play it that often, nor am I a hater. I think the layout is OK. But I really enjoyed yesterday's conditions. If you are partial to the course layout and have recently been disappointed by the conditions, I think it is fair to say it's currently worth another look.

Played this past Sunday, 6/29/14 with my group and I gave this course one more chance. I cannot release any of my funds to this course again. The greens (about 14 of them) are gone, fungus growing all over the greens that look like a type of seaweed splayed about, makes the ball jump everywhere, they need to tear up 1/2 of each green and reseed/resod while using the other half of the green for play. Tee boxes were ok, mostly uneven though. Fairways were acceptable, hit the fairway and get rewarded, right ? hit the rough and maybe you have grass, maybe dirt. Bunkers had nice sand in them and they were actuall raked by the staff this time before us golfers hit the links. I live too far from Brookside to drive here again. Goodbye, turn it into a parking lot

Played Sun Jun 22. Course conditions on EO Nay are declining rapidly. There really isn't anything positive to say about any part of the course right now -- greens are patchy, bumpy, slow; looks like they haven't been cut in quite a while. Tee boxes are chewed up and uneven. The fairways generally are fine and playable, if quite shaggy in spots. Pace of play was agonizingly slow today. The beverage cart staff here is very good, however, so it wasn't all bad. It would be really interesting to see what would happen if American Golf were allowed to invest to some money into these tracks. The layouts are so good, and it's just a shame to never be able to see these courses groomed up.
