I've been playing Brookside for years and years, and what I can tell you is this past year it has been in probably the worst condition I have ever seen it. The range has been redone and has top shot to use if you want and its pretty cool, but thats where it ends. The tee boxes for the most part are incredibly uneven and a mess, good luck finding flat ground to stand on, or grass or even a shot to hit since they like to put the tee box directly behind low hanging tree branches on some holes. The fairways are destroyed due to multiple hole punching (not sure about the overseeding), so every ball in the fairay is in a bad lie with no reward for actually hitting it. The traps have very little actually sand in most of them, they are just hard pan. Lastly the greens, most of the greens were ok, just very slow, however they just punched them as well. I really hope Brookside will get better but for now whoever is in charge has really messed this place up, bad enough they have concerts and games at the Rose Bowl but in the past they have been able to keep it from getting too bad but not anymore.

I play Brookside more than I'd like but none the less I play there, Yes, I'm aware of the festivals , concerts and any other non golf purpose the courses can be used for. My issue is the course condition and the service. Its amazing people will pay that much to play there. The fairways were dried and burned out, traps were terrible, the greens so so ( it was later day) and there wasn't even a cart person. It was hot and we were dying. They removed some of the benches on the tee boxes. Shame on the city of Pasadena. Its just a flagrant cash grab to pay for the Rose Bowl renovations from years ago. Brookside used to be premier venue now its just the skeleton of what it used to be. Oh, and no targets on the range, ridiculous Top Tracer to hit into a field. Save the money, drive a little further and get more value for your money.

I had not played little Brookside for a while, so was looking forward to returning. Kevin's recent review was spot on and rather thorough, so not a lot I can add. The greens were better than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. A rather warm morning but beating the afternoon heat was a real bonus. That, plus the cost for seniors is still very reasonable. If I lived closer, I'd probably play here more frequently, because as I've aged, this course has become so much more playable than big Brookside.

Impulsively out late Thursday 8/14 joining another single playing the whites with a 4:20 start. It's been a while since I've played here as it is not high in my rotation, but very once in a while I revisit it. In reverse order, the greens were in good shape running a quick medium speed. The rest of the course is a mixed bag and I thought overall playable but a little worse for wear. While more OK than not, there are definitely extensive areas of hard pan and even dirt. The worst case is the first hole with an expanse of packed dirt bisecting the fairway a little more than halfway to the green. It's been there at least since my previous visit, and since it's where concert equipment is set up, it doesn't seem like it is going away. A few holes also have rough that is mulched up for what I assume is going to be some sort of reseeding or something. While playable with more good surface than bad, the general feeling is a little overworked, dry and stressed. More than the usual quota of not so great lies. Teeing grounds are fine and the bunkers were firm with the ball tending to perch on top of the sand. Negatives aside, I still enjoyed myself because it's golf and I am easy. Also, the course was not crowded and we finished 18 at a 3.25 hour pace, which shocked me. We caught the group in front at the fourth tee and they let us play through, but the rest was just going with the pace. When I grabbed the tee time, I thought I'd be cutting the round short in the dark. I can't remember the last time I played 18 in much under 4.5 hours so it felt like a gift. Know before you go. It's playable but I expect better here as to the conditions. With football imminent and the course doubling as a parking lot for events, I wouldn't expect improvement in the near future. I probably won't check it out again until it has seen some post-football rainy season.

Rarely am I shocked at a course's condition but what's happened to #2 is a travesty. Between the summer concerts and parking for soccer games, the course is in pitiful condition. Went out Sunday 6/22 at 12:20pm walking, paired with a rider. Other two either didn't show or took one look at the conditions and turned around.

The massive dessert on the first hole is well known at this point, but if the rest of the course was in decent shape you could let that slide. Unfortunately, over half the tee boxes were roped off which means having to tee off in dirt patches, severely shortening many holes. And if that wasn't bad enough, you had a less than 50% chance of having a decent lie if you hit it in the middle of the fairway. Absolutely brutal round of golf. The greens were at least in good shape, although they were very soft and very slow. Was in one trap and sand was minimal but playable. Not much rough around the fairways, but there was some decent rough around the greens, although again, patchy and uneven lies abounded.

The kicker for me was the random discarded sofa by the side of the 18th fairway. Guess this isn't a golf course anymore, just a landfill that also doubles as a parking lot. I can't imagine conditions getting better any time soon with summer coming up. Avoid avoid avoid

Spent Sunday afternoon at Brookside #2 playing with a buddy from the blue tees and riding. Greens fee was a shrugging $78 with cart so not too bad but some question marks regarding conditions. We had a noon tee time and were paired with two cool young cats so it made for a fun day despite playing rather horribly.

The first hole remains a disaster with a massive chunk of the fairway turned into the world's largest waste area thanks to the Cruel World concert all the way back in May. Where the main stage was remains a wasteland that just happens to be in range of anyone decent's driving range. But once you get past that, it's alright.

Greens were actually running very fast and were the best part of the course. They're very tricky indeed as a defense for this generally short course that has no par 5s on the front nine. Holding greens can be tricky as well and the greenskeeper was in a devilish mood with some rough pin placements. But really good overall in that area.

The rest drops off significantly with lots of thin and dry areas around the course to detract from the good-decent sections. The rough is playable and not too scary. The bunkers were a little on the thin side but playable, while many of the tee boxes were beat up and lacking the proper coverage for anyone who doesn't opt for a tee on every hole. The overall conditions make good shots quite difficult.

Carts were in good shape and had a rudimentary but effective GPS system, while cart service was seen often and that was a good thing. POP was actually quite good surprisingly for Brookside on a Sunday as we finished in around four hours and twenty minutes.

Brookside #2 remains the inferior of the two courses at the Rose Bowl but with some TLC and a little more attention to detail it could be fun still.

Had a 7:00 am tee time. Walked with a buddy and an older couple. They were bang and go go go which was nice but they had little to no etiquette, if you know what I mean so with no one behind us we let them play on and never saw them! No one behind us for Three holes, we had the place to ourselves.. Tee boxes still show signs from aeration, as did some of the fairways. Fairways are very patchy with hard pan, dirt and some grass if your lucky. Bunkers were rock hard, all the way, including 18 fairway bunkers which my friend bounced out of with his drive, I mean it bounced out like it hit a cart path,! Lol. The best thing was pace of play, 3/12 and the GREENS!! Just slightly bumpy from aeration but firm and fast. If you know Brookside, the greens are super challenging but fun and held approach shots perfectly. Not bad but not great yet. Still fun but extra challenging conditions! GO PLAY!

Played in the Saturday Rancho Park Golf Club tournament at Brookside #2 and found the course to be lacking in a lot of areas, but it was still a fun day out despite the scorching temperatures that greeted us with a 10:20am tee time.

First off, the driving range is entirely too limited for a two-18 course with this much business. I wish they could find a way to improve that - maybe a second level? It's far from ideal having to wait in a significant line for a stall to open up with limited time before your call.

In terms of course conditions, again, it's not that great but it's playable. There is a massive dirt patch from the concert stages just before the green on the first hole and right after the tee box on the 18th. This section makes the Links at Victoria look like Bandon. After that it's better, but you're never going to confuse this 18 with the more pristine and challenging #1 course.

Greens were in good shape despite all the other issues - no real complaints there. Not too fast or anything, but solid enough. The fairways are dry, thin and a bit haphazard to be honest, but some of the holes are just fine. The bunkers were very thin and not great to hit from, while the rough was not penal in the least and just an extension of the thin conditions from the fairways. Tee boxes were pretty beat up but nothing too awful (we were assigned the white tees for my flight).

As previously mentioned, it was an incredibly hot day so thankful to have the cart service running around but I don't recall seeing a water station to refill the Hydroflask until around the sixth hole or so. Did I mention it was really hot? POP was not really high-intensity but then again it was tournament play so it's what one expects at those events.

So overall it's just not quite as satisfying as the other 18 at Brookside, but could be a heck of a lot closer if the conditions were more favorable. That's obviously tough to maintain though as the summer heat really starts to pound down on Pasadena.
