Out early on a very cold AM. Wow what a difference this course is w/o a years worth of no parking. Check in was easy and fast. Found the tee boxes to be covered in grass and no issues. Fairways have good coverage (yes there are some thin winter areas) and very good roll out. Traps were being cleaned as we played so no issues (I think we all know how they will be later in the day w/o rakes). Greens were very nice. Good grass coverage, mowed, firm and fast (best I personally have ever seen them). Excellent customer service and they have the check in area very well controlled vs the mob scene witnessed in past visits. I think by switching the 9's around on Koiner it removes the congestion between the two courses. I will be going back for sure with these current conditions. No food/beverage early AM but they do have an outside food area that opens later in the day. LA Co virus rules at check in and around the tee boxes. Pro shop and restaurant (of course) were closed. Pace of play was great and there was a marshal out moving things along. Not too busy when we arrived @ 6:15 but busy when we finished @ 9:30. No idea how Koiner course is? But it was green.

Wednesday morning tee time on Brookside #2. Check in is always a little crazy here, covid protocol being followed and the line to check in is in the path of carts going back and forth due to social distancing. Single carts only we tried to have two to a cart and were told this was not allowed. Course in very good shape. POP was a little more than 3 hours. Very hot day.

Today was my first time playing Brookside. I’ve tended to avoid it as I’ve often heard how crowded and slow it can be. I decided to give it a try with an 8am tee time hoping to get in before the crowds. I was paired with a very nice threesome of guys. I walked and they each had their own carts.

The usual precautions are in place – masks in common areas, no putting green, waivers for carts, foam in the cups. They did have portable hand washing/sanitizing stations set up near the check in. The only available restrooms were on the course and in the Rose Bowl Parking lot. The pro shop was closed so I was unable to get a logo ball :-(

The course conditions were pretty good. Several fairways and greens showed signs of recent punching, but it didn’t affect play at all. The fairways had good coverage but the grass was so dense – and the rough so long and deep- that it was a lot of work pushing my cart. I often took a round-about way to my ball just to avoid walking through it.

Early in the round, the course was very damp. That, combined with the deep grass, caused very little to no roll out. The greens were so slow it was ridiculous. They did speed up a lot by the back nine, though. I was in one bunker and it was just damp dirt. Some of the others looked much better.

The layout was really boring. Other than one par 3 where we hit over the ditch, there were no memorable holes. POP was ok at 4:15. Overall, I had a good time but it’s just not a course I can see playing again.

A buddy booked a threesome for us at Brookside on Saturday, but was disappointed to learn that it was not the superior #1 course, but instead the duller, less inspiring #2, due to the UCLA game and the fact that $20 parking fees for 40,000 cars means far more to the city than a few hundred greens fees. We arrived at the first tee for our 8:24 tee time and were promptly told that the first tee was now #17 but the kid working there did not really know where that was. Luckily we could figure it out - funny how that works. So off we went. There's a repetitive quality to the holes at Brookside #2 as par 4 after par 4 after par 4 roll on past you with mind-numbing frequency. You won't even experience your first par 5 until the 11th hole, and there's only one par 3 on the front nine. There are no elevations, one water feature, one long drainage ditch and a very distinct pattern for almost all of the small greens - two bunkers guarding each green to promote wedges alone into them. Conditions are pretty good though, so you can't complain about that. The greens did not necessarily look great all over, but they sure ran very quickly. Many of them also have absolutely ludicrous slopes that saw many barely tapped putts roll twenty feet down the green. And not just once. But on the more normal-sloped greens, they're just fine. Fairways, surely looking better than the other course thanks to all the tire tracks, were in good shape overall with a few thin areas but mostly good lies and a nice hitting surface. Near the big drainage system that runs parallel to many of the holes, there was a lot of dirt and mayhem to try to avoid. The bunkers were just below average condition - a bit too hard-packed and heavy. And the tee boxes? Some good, some fine, some poor. Plenty were a bit too crowned and/or thin for my liking. In summary, it's safe to say that the conditions are superior to the course, but it's still worth playing if you're free to go there. Just be wary of the UCLA football schedule and be prepared for some creative parking and course navigation along the way.

Played this course at 9:25AM. We had played in a foursome. Pace was good. So much of the areas was muddy with standing water or so soft the ball would not roll . The greens had be worked on and a lot of ball marks. The ball never rolled near straight. The bunkers had NO sand in them. Nothing but hard gravel material. This course should have been open for play. Typical county management, money above all else. Will not be returning!

I had not played "little Brookside" since 2015, so was anxious to return. With a 6:15am tee time, played the first two holes in the dark. Despite being the first group out, I'm embarrassed to admit it took our walking foursome three hours forty five minutes to finish. Too slow !

The fairways were soaked, but lucky for us they had been mowing them, so there was a little roll. Lies however were very thin. (Maybe from parking cars?) Rough was a mixed bag, thin, thick, bare, inconsistent. Greens were the highlight of the course. They rolled well, held shots and it times were fairly quick. Bunkers were well maintained, but some had sand, some didn't.

I remember when this course was 5700+ yards from the tips. Well father time, lengthening it some 300 yards, and wet conditions, caused it to play more like "big Brookside" for me. I enjoy the parklike setting, particularly on holes 10 thru 13. Plus $20 green fees makes it all that much better !

Was out playing #2 on 9/29 as part of a tournament. On a rather cool morning, off at 7:30 shotgun start and unfortunately, about a 5 hour round. Not sure why so long but what are you gonna do? Fairways were pretty good considering there was some thin spots out there. Fairways were wet and damp which meant no roll out and the course played much longer than the 6025 listed on the card from the blue tees. Was hitting it pretty well off of the tee and still had long irons into the green. The rough was that dang, thick kikuyu. Ugh! Really thick. Wasn’t in any bunkers but they looked wet. The greens rolled pretty nicely even though they were aerated about a month ago. A couple of holes like 11, 12 haven’t recovered fully from aeration but the others have. So not bad all things considered. If ever playing Brookside on a weekend, you’ll see a lot of activity around the course. Joggers, walkers, bicycles and of course once month, the swap meet at the Rose Bowl. Fun actually to see all this activity so it is a fun course to play. They lowered their rates which is something you never see so give it a go.

Early out, early finish. Only way to go. Took advantage of new price changes for seniors ($20 to walk). Found the course to be in relatively good shape, given the amount of play it gets. We did not have a single issue as it related to tee boxes, fairways, rough, traps or greens. Glad I got out early, as it was very busy when we finished. Customer service was excellent at all levels. I will play it again, but before the football season (which is next month). I know the parking will completely change the fairway conditions. It always has.

This is a great course to play if you are a junior golfer. You need shotmaking, accuracy, course management, and the chance to deal with well bunkered sloping greens. A low or mid handicapper here would defeat a low handicapper say at a Woodley Lakes or Encino almost every time. The Bad: The rough too thick. Maybe they are letting it grow for a tournament? The clientele are a bit odd. They are not nearly as friendly as the staff. Golf just takes too long out here in the afternoon. The traffic is horrible on the 110 going home. I will stick to Alondra even though it is not nearly the caliber off these two great courses.
