The greens have been sanded prior to the aeration to take place next week. Speeds were very slow. So was the pace of play. The rest of the course in fairly decent shape with exception of the bunker... Continue »

The greens have been sanded prior to the aeration to take place next week. Speeds were very slow. So was the pace of play. The rest of the course in fairly decent shape with exception of the bunkers which were very thin & hard. I did notice a nice pile of sand piled on a cart path which I assume will eventually find it's way into some bunkers.

This is a course that you "love to hate".. I absolutley love this course have played it for over 30 yrs now and it still gets me on just one hole to say "arrrgggg" . Will always come back. Good Staff ... Continue »

I rarely play here, primarily because of the distance from my home. Having an appointment in Glendale caused me to be in the area so thought I'd give it a try, hoping for no frost so I could make my 10:00am meeting. The good news .... no frost ! The bad .... 35 degress. Very cold !!

Staff was great - got out first, played in about 2 hours walking, so easily made my appointment. I forgot just how nice the views are on some of the holes and how much like a "walk in the park" this course offers. Lots of funs playing a short course which allowed a number of birdie opportunities and lots of GIR.

I had to laugh when I stood on #11 (playing the tips) and thought "what a stupid hole" 181 yards to a green that I could only see the extreme right edge. Who would design such a hole? Lots of quirky holes, but still had a great time, despite the frigid temperature. $20 for a wonderful day of the links

Well I haven't done this in a long while -- reviewing that is so excuse me if I tend to beat around the bush about my golf course review.

DeBell is a golf course designed by William Bell. He designed both Malibu, Recreation Park and a few others of mention and very local to us. I enjoy this course... it has a great deal of character tucked away in the foothills of Burbank.

Conditions are pretty good. Tee boxes relatively flat. Fairways were a little on the wet side but very playable. Consider also the rain the past few days, the course did dry up pretty well. Greens are smooth, quick and deadly. For the price I paid for the tournament ($75) it's worth it's weight in gold. I mean you have other courses -- premium courses -- that charge double and you don't get the quality of golf you expect. Here well there is value. Pace of play was decent but I was part of a slower group in the tournament and I felt for the groups behind us.

So bottom-line... go play this course. It's tucked away in the foothills of Burbank for a reason. For you bombers that tend to spray the ball well you will have a rough day. If you crave shot golf... come here. Enjoy the views and the golf. It's worth it's weight. BTW the club house was recently (5 years ago) renovated. Food is superior. Have fun.

Played morning of Oct 5. This was my first round at De Bell in about 5 or 6 years; I was looking forward to it b/c the layout is fun, and to my surprise, course conditions were pretty darn good for a muni, which I rate according to different standards; what I expect from De Bell is different than what I would expect from Angeles National. I thought the conditions were worthy of the greens fee today, and that's all you can expect. Everything was in above average condition, with no glaring problems. The biggest problem today, however, was the young starter -- the poor kid either has never received any training, or did, but just didn't care because as soon as I walked in the door, he was snarling. No hello, no courtesy, no eye contact, snippy attitude. He did everything wrong. I hope his GM reads this post, b/c this kid is going to cost him customers. It's just completely unacceptable. I have a secret ranking of the worst starters in SoCal, and De Bell just shot to the top of the list.

Played 7-22-13 early morning as a twosome finishing in 2 1/2 hours. Course is in descent shape. Tee boxes are ok always a little chewed up because of so much iron play off of them. Fairways where nice with a few bare spots. Rough in good shape . Greens very nice smooth and rolling true with medium speed. Short tight course that makes you think youre way around instead of just grip and rip.

Played 6/15. The course is in great shape. Great course to give your irons a work out. There are only 3 or 4 holes that gives you any advantage for hitting a good driver. If your a good shot shaper, it would be even more fun as the course has a lot of dog legs.

STAY BELOW THE HOLE! Many many times you're looking a 3 putt even from inside 12 feet if your above the hole.

Every hole is tree lined and lots of elevation changes. Nice to have on a hot day.

If you don't mind keeping the big stick in your bag, a lot of fun and great value.

Tee Box - Some of them could use some leveling, but mostly good.
Fairways - A few thin/bare spots, but mostly very nice.
Rough - Mostly thick/lush and tough.
Greens - GEM!

Overall well-maintained muni course. Greens and sand are by far the highlight. Rest of the course is starting to green up and come out of winter-like conditions.

Overall well-maintained muni course. Greens and sand are by far the highlight. Rest of the course is starting to green up and come out of winter-like conditions.

Greens were extremely healthy looking, verdant and putted well with medium speed and just occasional bumpiness - 7.5-8. They were on the firm side too. Sand was terrific quality for a muni with a good covering and decent quality (a bit rockier in the fairways but still very good) - 9.5-10.

Both fairways and rough were starting to green up but a bit patchy still with generally fair lies at best. Some fringes were being worked on and reseeded in spots - 6 overall. Tees are the usual grab bag with all the iron play on short par 4's. Any of the older tees are lumpy and thin with plenty of damage. The repaired and re-sodded tees on 4 and 7, for instance, are much better - overall an average of 5.5

Course is tricky and tight and you don't really need driver except perhaps on a few holes on the back. Barrancas and trees line every fairway - most of them have hazards on both sides - so accuracy is everything. At debell, you are only ever one swing away from perdition. Greens are tiny and severe and will test your up and down skills, lag putting, short putting and speed control. Any 2 putt is good work here.
