Terrible, horrible, disgusting, depressing, sad, awful, and just unbelievable how bad a shape the course is in right now. They aerated the greens in mid-September, and it still shows signs of holes and bumpiness all over! Hardly any grass on fairways, no rough to speak of, the sand traps are barely playable and the tee boxes are destroyed. The same bad players flock to the course and none of them take care of it nor do they care, because they're all harried by everybody else to keep up the pace and they only have to move faster because they spray it all over the place! Not worth the money or time right now.

Probably one of the most over-rated golf courses in the country. Not a true links course, and not a very well maintained golf course other than the fairly decent greens. Fairways can be thin, patchy, some lush and others dried and crusty. There is no rough to speak of along the fairways, but there is a thick rough edging the outside rims of the greens, which makes no sense except to stop errant shot from spilling out to the hazard! Stupid design. Front 9 is far better than the back 9. Even though the course looks flat, it is not, and that is what makes old guys think they can walk this course in less than 4.5 hours, but they don't. The course is built into the long-sloped canyon that extends from the the hills all the way down to the houses at the south end. It can be a tough walk for those who don't have legs, to play on pace. The lush, extensive "fringe" areas surrounding the greens are almost always too soft, grabbing the ball if too hard or high, when in fact it should be the same as the dried out fairways so that the ball can be rolled up and through to the cup as on a true links course. But this is not a true links course, so it's still a typical target-oriented shoot at the pin with spin kind of soft golf course. The dudes in the pro shop are rude and unwelcoming, not even a smile on their faces, and they don't explain anything to you, ask you whether you played here before or anything. Didn't see a marshal on the course. The only time that the course gets interesting is when the wind blows.

Played 3/6/13. 8AM. Cloudy, cold, slightly windy.
The course must have just sanded and watered the greens because they were extremely soft, cushioned, sandy on top, uncut this morning, wet, and really slow. Not so sandy that it's white, but there is a fine layer of sand on the top. They looke green but the sand is definitely there. Somebody had they were firm the other day - well it's not any more. Give it at least a week if you're planning on playing here. So many ballmarks!
The rest of the course is as expected for a cheap muni, lots of divots everywhere, grass growing in clumps, and no grass in other parts. The best thing about the course are the bunkers! Somebody in the maintenance department went out there and did a great job on the bunkers. Well raked and easy to play out of.
If you want to play a hilly, treelined, tight course, go play Knollwood - much better course and green conditions than here overall.

Played the South course 2/25/13. Wow. What HORRENDOUS shape it's in. The tee boxes are thrashed or hard as rock, grass barely growing on most. The fairways and rough are the SAME, you couldn't tell what started and ended where, grass barely growing on most fairways, it's a real cow-pasture, uneven, bumpy, soft in some spots, hard as rock in others, and dried, hard mud patches all over the place. The greens are just so-so, it's like most public courses everywhere at this time of the year in the Southland. I've played the course many times over the years, I haven't seen it this bad in I don't know how long. I'm amazed that they just had the PGA pre-qualifiers here this month! Was it this bad 3 weeks ago? Probably. If you have the time and money, go elsewhere for at least the next couple months. The place needs to heal, the club needs to let the grass grow back everywhere, and re-seed. It's in desperate need of TLC. Whether the club fixes it or not is doubtful, somebody with authority needs to speak up and let them know how terrible the place is, right now. It's surprising with a good amount of rain that we've had. Nobody's really taking care of the course here. For the price, it's better to play somewhere else at half the cost. It's a robbery to take that money from paying customers with the course in this bad a shape.

Knollwood. Another great, classic course made famous from the Rat Pack days of Sinatra and the boys. A great course for being a public course. Kikuyu fairways and PoaAnnua greens. A typical William F Bell design, he did a bunch of these canyon courses all over California with the same kind of design, the same grasses.
You have got to play it during the week in the mornings to get in before 5 hour round. That's the only way, unfortunately, as the course lets out 5somes.
The greens are almost, always, very very good, if not excellent. On the hilly slopes they can be extremely fast, sometimes too sloped to make them fair as you watch the ball go rolling off the green. Add to that the Poa grass, it's a real test of your patience.
For a public course, you can't beat this place, for its price and its tremendous layout. A lot of players find it hard to play here as, on a lot of the holes, you MUST curve the ball off the tee to give yourself a better chance of getting at the greens. Some of the tee shots are really tight, due to the massive trees lining up all the fairways on pretty much every hole. But the holes are well designed into the hills, curving and going up and down with the contours of the slopes.
It's a real fun place to play. Worth the money and time if you can get out at the right day or time of the week.

The older of the two courses at the Sepulveda complex, a part of the LA City system.
In recent years they extended holes 3 and and 12 to make them into longer holes and Par 5s, to make it more even with the other one, to get more play on this side.
I think it's the better and more interesting layout of the two courses, with a bit more curve to some of the hole layouts and a bit more elevation changes.
Huge trees all around some of the holes are tight, so you have to drive it well.
The greens are almost always better on Balboa than Encino.
It's a nice place to walk and play a casual round for practice.

The longer and newer of the two courses at the Sepulveda complex, the other being Balboa.
All kinds of grasses all over the fairways and rough, very messy. But it takes some skill and imagination to play that stuff! Huge trees all around.
If you want a casual practice game, instead of just pounding balls at the range, this would be a good place to just knock it out there. The fairways are wide, the greens are all mostly flat and elevated. You'll be driving the ball long all day, as there isn't much roll from the clumpy grass and flat fairways, so the real challenge is the approach shots to the green. In the winter the ball does roll out a bit more, as long as you don't play the couple days after heavy rains.
Just a good place to walk.

Aaaaah Rancho Park. One of the best public courses in the country, steeped in tradition and history. The classic course where the old L.A. Open used to be played, back in the 60's, with the famous 18th hole where Arnold Palmer shot a 12. The LA City Chamber of Commerce commemorated that moment with a plaque that they placed at the top of the back tees - check it out.
The best time to play the course is in the winter months, after a little bit of rain. The moisture and the cooler weather keeps the greens nice and tight, and they roll great. Tricky greens, some with crazy undulations and slopes.
It's an older course so the trees are mature and tall, making some of the holes look tight. With modern equipment, a lot of the holes can be overcome, but the dogleg twists and turns and the ups and downs are still great challenges even to this day - a testament to its wonderful design.
It's always fun to play Rancho, even when it's crowded! But beware! The weekends are a guarantee for 6+ hour rounds, and during the week it's best to get out there early.

OK so this is my first review ever!
OK, so it's L.A. City public golf. By now you all know what that means. They put out groups in 6 minute intervals, so take it for what it is. It's still a good place to practice and to hit it out there. Still a fun layout.
Mature trees on both sides.
If the greens are cut, they're really good, with lots of undulations and slopes and can be very tricky. The fairways and rough are like cow pasture, with all kinds of grasses growing, but there's an art to playing out of that stuff. The bunkers are never raked by anybody, so it is what it is.
The time it takes to play can be a pain at times, so try to get out there early in the morning before 9 and you'll be done in 4 to 4.5 hours. After that, be ready for 5 plus most of the time, and 6 on the weekends.
