Fairways looking really nice right now. The rough was 3 to 5 inches deep & thick. Greens putted well. Tee boxes & traps...well...they are still the worst features of the course.

Played yesterday 7/9. They had just aerated the fairways with plugs remaining but the greens were still very nice. This is a short course but don't be fooled by the score card. Since it's a muni, fees are reasonable although there was an increase as of July 1. This is a shotmaker's course. If you are used to flat "Grip and Rip" courses, you may spend a lot of time where you don't want to be. The driver is not always the "go-to" off the tee. Placement is everything.

Since it's a little off the beaten path, it doesn't get a lot of play but there is plenty of challenge to keep you coming back. Pace of play can be VERY good and I once played the back 9 in 1:25 (and that was with a walking partner).

Worth taking a little time to find it and don't expect to score really well the first time.. There IS a definite learning curve.

Here's the deal... this is pretty demanding course that you simply can't muscle your way around. Yes, it's a very tight course with barancas on many holes and most of the par fours aren't very long. What this course lacks in length overall it definitely makes up in character. Two of the par threes are 200+ yards while another requires a blind shot over a mountain side downhill to a green you can't see. Tee shots require a cut iron on one hole followed up by a draw long iron off the next. Some of the shorter hitters can take a 3 wood or driver but I would recommend against it. You definitely have to play smart, miss on the right side and take your medicine. Get a par on the uphill par four 10th and you should go home happy. Overall, great course with a fantastic staff that is professional and nice. Great new clubhouse recently finished that is the best municipal clubhouse around.

Played on Saturday, 06/13/09, with Kilt1iron using c4tt.com to get a decent $25 rate for a Saturday afternoon. Started about 10 to 15 minutes early with another single. O.K., cool. Lined up at number 10 until the starter came out and said we were on the wrong tee. Oh, they flipped the nines about 2 years ago. No waiting on the first 2 holes, then it was a backup until the last. Greens good, many tees need to be levelled, and sand traps have many small, sharp rocks in them. Sand was good otherwise. Kind of a quirky course where you are hitting irons off most tees, or are trying to drive greens. However, that can easily get you into trouble with the many hazards, small greens, and pace of play issues.

Played last Sat at about 1:15 and finished shortly after 6. I thought this was an interesting course. Right up on the mountains and some pretty steep elevation changes, doglegs, etc. Most of the front 9 are irons off the tee because of some serious doglegs and the back nine has some holes which you can pull out driver. While putting certainly pay attention to where the mountains and valley are because I did not see some break in some of my putts. I was in one bunker and thought the sand quality was good. Fairways were decent and there really isn't any rough because its basically fairway or canyon. Quite a few tee boxes that were beat up. For $42 w/ a cart I thought it was a decent play.

The previous two reviews for De Bell show that this can definitely be a love it or hate it layout. I'll leave it for the reader to go deeper into the earlier postings for a more detailed course description -- suffice it to say it's generally short, tight, challenging and built into hillside above Burbank. It tends to get the better of me and I don't play it too frequently, but I happen to be one who appreciates its character and challenges. Today was my first trip out there since completion of the new clubhouse and I generally found the course in better shape overall as I've seen it. More grass on more tee boxes, even where I've seen some sparse, overworked boxes in the past. Not all perfectly level, but most were very good and none too bad. Tricky greens varied a little in pace, but averaged a good medium speed and were in good condition -- not many ball marks at all. Avoided the sand so I can't speak about that. Fairways were in good shape and no thin or bare areas come to mind. The new clubhouse has a Craftsmen-esque exterior that is nice enough but understated from the outside. However, the experience inside is a quite a bit different form the old clubhouse. The pro shop has a nice, rich, warm feel to it and the upstairs bar and outside deck are more spacious and better oriented to view fairways in one of three directions. A hint -- the downstairs men and women's restrooms are basic and clean, but locking one-person-at-a-time style. If you don't want to wait and are willing to head upstairs, the restroom in the bar has more capacity and a nicer upscale clubhouse feel. There is even an extra room in the back section of the men's room with a couple of tables and chairs to play cards or whatever. I can't give you details o the upstairs' women's room, but's nice to see the improvements on and off the course. Pace was a bit slow, as in 5-hours, but it's Sunday. It left me feeling that I wanted to come back again and get beat up sooner rather than later.

This is my home course. I usually play it around 2-3 times a month. I enjoy watching all the big hitters struggle with all the doglegs. It is not long long course, but it does force you to use all your clubs and all different types of shots. For the length and price, it is a great weekday play.
