This course is totally different than a few years ago and it shows- it was busier than last time I played, and in better shape- especially the greens. I guess we were in front of the aerication which is next week so they were like awesome, hard to read, breaks like away from the hill except on #7, #7 broke 'toward' the hillside! It was a little wet in the morning but it was cloudy and drizzly, and in the afternoon the clearing brought wildlife like a redtail hawk and a bobcat and more deer. It was wild, there are not any homes but the forest and a canyon, and so quiet too.

Once the clouds and drizzle parted we could see downtown LA skyline- when we played before it was too smoggy along the foothills. Our friends brought us back after 2 or 3 years away.

The guy from the snack bar helps us when our cart was fading after 9 holes to get a new cart faster than the proshop folks

I took the advice from locals and before- the greens are breaking toward the ocean or valley except #7- which broke uphill I swear! The seniors that walkn here are crazy, its a giant mountain it talkes too long to walk it and they should make the walkers let the carts play through since its busier now!

Through the summer and fall I have been attempting to play all the full 18 hole LA County courses. Today I played Marshall Canyon. For me from Mid-city LA it was about a 42 mile drive, but going against the incoming traffic on the 210 was not that bad. I left home at 6:30 am and was teeing off at 8:12 with a couple of respectable old timers. There was a 3-some in front of us and a 2-some behind. This kind of grouping would never happen at an LA City Course and I don't understand the logic of it here! Our 3-some had to wait minutes for every shot on every hole with the par-3's backed up by two groups. What are Marshalls for? Despite the slow play I found the course interesting in the way the routing followed the terrain of the San Gabriel Mountain footlands. The focus of the routing takes advantage of crossing the Canyon that comes into play several times in the round which calls for a forced carry, but mostly on par-3 holes. The Front-9 seems to ascend the slope of the foothills and then descend to the cubhouse. The Back-9 flows down the foothills and then back up. There are great mountain views to the north and far away vistas to the southern valley. On a couple of holes the Live Oak Reservoir is visible below. Unfortunatly the "Oldtimers" I was playing with were San Dimas regulars who had come here because of a tournament on their course and we were all baffled by the breaks on the greens. I had read that all the putts break toward the valley, but sometimes you just don't know because the slope appears otherwise! Also almost all of the greens are really higher on the back and slope down toward the front. Maybe that's why they keep the greens cut a little longer than most and why they are so wet. The problem with the overly wet greens is that the water seeps down toward the front of the greens and when landing a ball there it just dies!?! If this is the way they maintain the course then I will adjust the next time I play here. It may be a while though. I didn't play well here and would like to return to see what I can really do with some foreknowledge. However, for me to drive this far I would rather play Mountain Meadows. I would place this course toward the top of the second tier County courses along with Lakewood, Diamond Bar, Links at Victoria and Chester Washington, all of which are closer to my home.

For the most part the course is in nice condition, However the greens, which are what defines this course, need to be quicker to allow this course to present any challenge at all. With slow soft green... Continue »

For the most part the course is in nice condition, However the greens, which are what defines this course, need to be quicker to allow this course to present any challenge at all. With slow soft greens, this place is "ripe for the taking". Always a fun place to play!

Greens were very soft and wet. There was mud puddles on various holes. Watch out for the arroyo, my ball disappeared in that thick brush. Fun course and got to see some deer next to the 1st hole.

Pros: Great beginner/intermediate course. Good lay up holes and wide fairways give a lot of options off the tee box. Course was not crowded that day. Forces the player to use alot of different clubs. Great value for $34 internet discount.

Cons: Fairway a bit brown and dried out in several areas. Tee box on 13 was under repair, temporary tee box was created, not that big of a deal.

Overall, the course played well. The greens are slower than other courses.

I THOUGHT THE COURSE WAS GOOD FOR ITS VALUE. THE TEE BOXES AND FAIRWAYS ARE MAINTAINED PRETTY WELL, SOLONG AS THE "HACKERS" DON'T OVER PLAY THIS GOLF COURSE. THE ROUGH IS LUSH ENOUGH TO GET A CLEAN SWING AND FLY A SHOT OUT OF IT. THE SAND TRAPS HAD GOOD QUALITY OF SAND, NOT THIS OR HARD-PAN. DIFFENTLY PLAYABLE. THE GRENS ARE VERY "SPONGY" WHICH MADE THEM ROLL PRETTY SLOW, AND WITH THE SOPES OF THE SURROUNDING (MOUNTAIN) RANGES IT MADE THE GREENS SEEM TO ROLL EVEN SLOWER. THE GREENS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, THOUGH YOU WILL HAVE TO REALLY GIVE YOUR PUTTS A LITTLE MORE "POP" TO GET IT ROLLING.
OVERALL IT IS A GOOD COURSE AND IS KEPT IN GOOD PLAYING CONDITION. I WOULD PLAY IT AGAIN.
