Played it a couple of weeks ago for the second time and fared quite better than the first time when I didn't know where to hit my shots especially on some of the blind approaches/shots on several holes.

Quite an interesting overall layout. I hardly had a level lie throughout my round. It is narrow and lined with trees on some holes but there are also a couple of fairly open holes where you can let it rip. The greens are fairly well designed and most of them had some moderate slope to them with a few very undulating greens that at times borders on being unfair. If they keep the greens in great shape, the greens could be very very challenging and fun to play. But unfortunately that day, it was rolling quite slow and very bumpy. Fairways were average and the sand was somewhat in better shape. Tee boxes were average.

Will play here again because the layout is quite fun and just hoping that the overall condition of the course will improve soon because this is one of the better LA county courses in terms of design and layout.

I played yesterday (Sunday) and teed off at about 10:15. It was a great day and there were a lot of positives about this course.

Its not your typical L.A. County course. There are only a couple houses on the course, and it is surrounded by lots of natural vegetation and wildlife. I didn't see any deer, but there were tons of hummingbirds and some other birds you don't see in Lakewood. Lots to enjoy if you're playing a five plus hour round.

The course itself is also different and interesting. Very short by modern standards, with three par fives (one 458 yards from the blue tees) that most mid-handicappers could reach with two good shots. The par fours are all short to medium and straight or dog leg left (so slicers beware). They have a couple really nice par threes, too. All in all, a confidence builder if you're a decent player and can work the ball right to left.

On the down side, the course from tee to green was wetter than any course I have ever played. Those of you who have played El Dorado after a few days of rain have a pretty good mental picture. It was like rainy day golf, but it wasn't raining. Also, some of the greens, especially on the back side, have that fungus or whatever it is. Maybe that's why most of the other greens are shaggy and slow. Whatever the reason, it makes the greens much easier to putt than they could be, and makes for easier scoring.

I would recommend sneaking off to this course once in a while. It's a nice change of pace.

Where were the marshalls? I even waved at one on the 10th to get his attention - he looked and went the other way. The marshalls really should have monitored the pace. The group in front of us was a group of four that held two groups up at every hole since the 4th. They really should have been playing from the whites, if not reds.
Other than the pace and lack of marshalls, very nice/scenic course. Greens were super slow in the morning, from the heavy clouds and drizzle, but dryed up by the later part of the day. Some tee boxes were beat up, because it can't dry up (from trees blocking the sun). The greens stayed soft all day though.
Cafe/Food staff were very friendly, along with the lady on the food cart.
I would play again, hopefully playing through a little quicker next time.

Length is not needed here. On many holes you have to aim down the tree line on the right or left. Every fairway has some degree of slope to it. It has some nice medium length par 3's.

Played on April 21. This was my first time playing this course. I was amazed that on a Friday afternoon around 1:00pm the course was not very busy. As noted by the privious reviewer most of the fairways need to be played down one side or the other to avoid ending up in the rough due to sloping fairways. The tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers are in good shape. The rough has some bare areas. The greens, although I putted decent, drove me crazy. Many of the greens are severely pitched. I am guessing that in order to keep down hill putts from rolling off the greens they keep the greens SLOW and bumpy. If you have a 25 footer up hill you better tee it up to get it to the hole. I heard the greens were aerated two weeks ago so hopefully they will get better. The layout is nice. There are a few holes with almost 90 degree doglegs, DONT hit your driver or you will put it through the turn. I was lucky to play with a couple of locals who clued me in. The price is worth what you get.

Played Marshall Canyon for the first time today. It was easier to get some tee time options on short notice than Sant Anita.

Generally hilly with a lot of contour and/or slope on the greens. A bit of a backup on the first tee, but not too bad. But when we came down the back of the green of the par-three second to the third hole, there were three foursomes stacked up ahead of us. I don't know what caused the logjam, but in fairness to the course, once we got through that hole, the general pace was pretty steady with only a few relatively short waits thereafter. Also, while we didn't have the fastest grouparound, we never really lost any ground on the group ahead that wasn't regained.

I think it netted out to around a five-and-change hour round.

A lot of the fairways had a predominant slope one way or the other, so in that respect it was target golf. You want to be able to get the ball on the high side or else, in some cases, even a good, centered drive will run off to one side. Also, if you are not fond of sidehill lies, this wouldn't be your first choice to play.

While not a generally long course there are some interesting par threes that hit over barrancas and a few short but severe dogleg par fours in the mix.

Because of all the sidehills, I wouldn't make it too regular a course, but I enjoyed the challenge and I liked it as a change of pace. I was struggling early, but seemed to figure some stuff out later in the round, so that always leaves one feeling positive, as if something has been accomplished even if not the best score.

Additionally, there are some nice views from around the course.

Generally, no negatives, just a matter of what you like based on the descriptions above. The greens have been punched recently and were still showing it and running slow. I have assume they will get much better. Definitely challenging greens.

Overall, I enjoyed it and recommend trying it.
