Played today. Based on the 4 reviews in July I knew what I was in for. And also the last review was very helpful. My last time playing here was not that great. But today I found a much better course to play. Tee boxes were fine. Fairways (a little thin in spots) played well and provided some decent roll out. No issues with the rough. Missed the bunkers but heard no complaints from my group. Greens chipped/putted decently but would prefer a little faster but with the heat I think that is asking too much. Excellent check in as well as pace of play. I am ready to begin playing this course on a more regular basis. With an LA Sr card the price is very good.

I haven't played here in over 5 years. I was impressed with how nicely they have kept up the conditions. The tee boxes are fairly level and are in good condition. The fairway and rough is well watered and gives you good lies throughout the course. Greens where soft and a bit slow, but rolled true. I glad they kept up the conditions, so I'm liking this track again.

Always a pleasure to play Santa Anita. It's one of the nicest walks around. Just a wonderful parklike setting with good views of the foothills. If you enjoy old style tradition golf courses, Santa Anita should satisfy your needs. Rolling fairways with all the "Red Cars" buried underneath provide for some challenging stances/lies.

Course is in good, not great condition. Some areas in the fairways need attention, same with the rough. Greens better than expected, but still a tad too slow for my taste. Bunkers are kind of "crusty", so it depends upon where your shot ends up

Staff is always friendly and the senior rates make this a real bargain

First time playing here last Friday. I had read the review and expected typical muni conditions and they met those expectations. The layout is entertaining and not repetitive which is nice because that can be an easy running theme for some muni's. Price was a little steeper than expected $55 to ride but $37 to walk for a 1:30 on a Friday tee time. Course has some very nice views of the mountains that are 10 miles away, I bet the day after a cold storm the snow capped mountains would make this course stunning. Course conditions were decent. Tee boxes a little chewed up but manageable. Fairways were a mix of grasses a little longer than normal fairways but still offered good roll. Greens were the highlight offering fast but receptive conditions. They were a little beat up because of all the play from a-hole golfers not fixing their marks but that's not the courses fault. Rough was a rough in quality with a mix of grasses and dirt spots. Sand traps were below average in the two traps I was in and people seem to not care about raking their footprints too. Overall if in the area and jonezing for a round of golf this place with suffice. I wouldn't make the drive from OC again but a great time was had with Rob, Kevin, and Pete.

Played Friday afternoon at Santa Anita for my GK Cup match with Mpisarski01 and joined by Kevin (t8fish) and Peter. A recent visit about two months before had seen Santa Anita in some of its best shape ever, so I was looking forward to another visit, despite how difficult this course seems to play for me for some reason.

Conditions were almost as good as they were the last time we were here, but only slightly less green in the fairways and the bunkers were a little less inviting. By no means is the course in bad shape though, and it's entirely playable and fun right now.

Fairways are mostly good with a few thin areas here or there, especially when chipping around the greens or on any of the many mounds that dot the course where consistent sunlight may prove challenging. The rough is varied but nothing unplayable. Bunkers were a little on the crusty side and the tee boxes were mostly level and in good shape.

Greens were running pretty nicely, perhaps a bit faster than the last visit here. They held shots well and rolled pretty true with just a few quick-turns right near the hole on putts that looked destined to sink. A few tricky angles to deal with at Santa Anita but for the most part the green complexes are manageable, not tricked-out, and gettable.

There was no cart service all day but there is a snack shop at the turn, however the cafe was closed already by around 4pm, which seemed odd, but it was also a fairly quiet Friday afternoon which meant the POP was pretty good all day, coming in at around 4.5 hours I believe.

Classic LA design and some challenging long holes and par 3s, but it's not going to beat you up too badly if you're hitting your ball straight and avoiding some of the thick tree areas that line every hole. It's a good day out and I would not hesitate to play there again in the near future, especially if it was a lot closer to where I live.

Played Friday 7/16, 1:33 tee off with a buddy, accompanying the Roarksown1 vs. Mpisarski01 GK match. Conditions were pretty solid all around. Teeing grounds here are pretty level with sufficient coverage. Fairways were generally well covered, a touch on the tight side with decent rollout and the occasional harder/thin patch. I don't recall having to over-think any fairway shots due to the conditions. Rough on average was not punitive, but there were both thicker patches and hardpan areas that could come into play off the fairways. Bunkers were pretty clean but firm. Comparing the results from the two bunkers I visited, I had better success picking the ball with a chip than splashing out. Greenside conditions were good for chipping but skewed tighter than fluffier. The greens were in good shape and running a good medium quick — much better than the last visit here and a good speed for this course. Upon arrival, it was surprisingly quiet around the clubhouse for a Friday afternoon — a few people on the range and no one on the putting green. Pace was good on the course with minimal waiting and I'd guess to the tune of something under 4.5 hours. It was a warm afternoon but some breeze made it not so bad. The snack bar closed right before we sat down for a post-round libation, but beverages were available to be purchased from the starters office. The course has enough playing interest and some nice views. It was a good round with good company and the course is recommended in its current state.

Was invited to play here this AM. Thanks to Kevin/Robert for their fine reviews. I knew exactly what to expect. I have always liked this course, as it is close to home and a good value for seniors with LA card. But the prior reviews have kept me away. What was really great was the clear sunny skies vs the recent May Gray. I walked and ended up playing in 4 H. The two previous reviews gave me all the info I needed from checking in, teeing off # 1, fairways, traps, greens and making the turn. It certainly pays to be able to "know before you go". I also had the advantage of early maintenance, which I doubt they did not have on the weekend? So thank you both for your informative reviews. I better start following you guys around after you play on the weekends (LOL).

Not much more to add after Kevin's review from our Friday afternoon round at Santa Anita, but really true that the fairways have never looked better - at least in each of the five or six other visits I've ever had here over the years.

I always remember plenty of thin areas in many of the fairways, but that's just not the case right now and it's really optically special, especially with the beautiful mountain views as well. It was a very windy day so not only were we dealing with the slow and slightly unkempt greens, but also all the debris from nearby trees and bushes that swallowed up many of the greens. It was an adventure.

There's a convenient snack shop at the turn which was nice, but no cart service throughout the round. We also rode and played from the blue tees. Well worth the price. I am looking forward to my next round there already to try and break my sub-90 curse at this place.

Teed off out Friday, 5/21 around 1:40 with Robert (roarksown1) as a two-some on a beautiful but windy afternoon. I was surprised there wasn't a more recent review since early February. I was there last around that time but only got 13 holes in before dark. Short story is really nice general conditions and greens that need work. Teeing grounds here are typically level and the coverage is adequate — no problems there. The fairways were the biggest surprise in a pleasant way. I can't remember the coverage being as well grown in and lush than it was on the day. We were hard pressed to find a brownish area, much less a thin one throughout the round. Rough overall was well grown and green in but not overly long and generally playable. Bunkers on the whole were clean and on the firm side, some more so than others. I was in the front bunker on the par-3 15th that had a deceptively soft but thin top layer over a hard underlayer and it cost me. The surrounding areas were in good shape for short shots to the greens. The greens were the counterpoint to the rest of the conditions. A little bumpy at times but definitely slow. It straightened out your putting lines but it was easy to leave putts just short or have then decelerate and turn at the last moment. They weren't awful, but weren't fun and they required adapting to. A more reasonable medium speed or better would have made the day that much more enjoyable. That said, they were serviceable enough that the golf gods bestowed Robert a 60 foot par putt on the 9th. We started out with an open course and caught up by the 6th hole, but things moved along well enough for a little over a four hour round. The course has enough contour, visual interest and challenge as well as views of the local mountains. It really was a nice day with enjoyable conditions, even with the wind which was a factor but not overwhelming. As long as you know what to expect with the greens, I would still recommend the course for its overall conditions right now. The practice green is consistent with, and maybe a touch slower than what you find out on the course, so there is a chance to get acclimated before you go out. If they can get the greens smoothed out with a more playable speed, the course will be in as good a shape as I've seen it.
