This is supplemental to my review on 7/12. I realized I forgot to mention that yardage indicators at Wilson were spotty at best. Rarely an in-ground marker and I never saw a numbered sprinkler head. Stakes were also inconsistent and seemed to be missing at times. I can remember being somewhere around 100 yards out on the fourth hole and the nearest indicator was the 150 yd stake — nothing for 100 yds to be found — I even looked on the cart path for a color stripe. Additionally, I couldn't find yardage monuments by the tee boxes. The signage was there, but no corresponding markers. On the 15th tee box, there were three stone yardage monuments set aside by the tee box, not yet placed or installed. I assume they will be installed soon and, if that tee box, then perhaps the rest will follow. I was playing a casual round, but as someone who paces off my yardages, it was unprecedented and frequently left me guessing.

I went over to Wilson yesterday, Sunday 7/12, sometime around 8 to see if I could get on as a single. I was expecting it to be very busy but decided to take a chance anyway. Well, when I asked the starter about the wait, he asked me if I wanted to go out as a single or wait to play with someone else. I was confused, but it turned out that after the foursome on the tee, there was no one else going out at that moment. The starter said it had been busier earlier. Go figure. I went out as a single and there was a foursome on the tee by the time I was halfway to the first green. Conditions were good all around. Tee boxes were nice and level and had good coverage. Fairways were well grown in and a bit lush. Between the grass length and the fact that it was damp for most of the round, there were good lies but less roll out than I've seen on a local course in quite awhile. The rough was long enough to penalize an errant shot. The one bunker I was in was in good shape and the greens were clean and medium speed. Pace was slower in the beginning and picked up a bit for what I guess was about a four and half hour round. A rather odd experience for a Sunday morning to get right on and play as a single in a sea of foursomes, but I'm not complaining.

Played last Saturday morning. The course is undergoing work on the tee boxes, a few cart paths and overall work in preparations for the Special Olympic World Games at the end of July. As previously reported, about two-thirds of the tee boxes are being worked on, so you get to play between 50-75 yards shorter on some holes or like the lower tee box on #4. Looks like they are trying to build platform tee box areas for most of the holes, similar to hole #16. Also, beware of medium and large sized rocks off the fairway which is probably a result of the tee box rebuilds. Considering the drought, the rough is thicker and more prominent than I would suspect (especially in comparison to Rancho Park). They expect the work to be done by the end of June to be ready for the end of July.

A quick update: Overall playing conditions continue to improve since my last post 4 weeks ago. Biggest issue are the tee boxes. Most of them have gotten re-sodded or having major reconstruction. About 15 of the tees were temporary this week, so it is playing significantly shorter (easier?) than usual. I don't expect Wilson to be "normal" for at least a couple more months...hopefully I'm wrong.

Played yesterday as a foursome- 12:30.
The course was somewhat empty. Maybe people are staying away due to cart path const. and recent punching. The fairways were in most part in good condition for a city course. Eventually, I'd like to see them touch up around the new cart path and repair bare dirt spots on the fairways. The greens are recovering nicely. A little bumpy and slower putts will be affected by the new growth. However, even with a revised tee box on some of the holes, the course is very playable. 4.5 hours.

The greens have mostly healed and were rolling true, but could really benefit from a good mowing to get them back up to speed. Construction and maintenance continue to be an issue throughout the course layouts of both Wilson and Harding. Wilson is mostly affected with about a 3rd of tee boxes being temporary. Playing shorter but still fun.

Both Wilson and Harding are installing new cart paths throughout. So there are several holes that are abbreviated where tee boxes are moved significantly and several spots that are being cleared for the cart paths come into play with tractors and loading trucks coming and going. Otherwise, playing conditions throughout are pretty good.

Haven't played Wilson in over 20 years so it was a real thrill to get out today. Had a 7:00 am tee time and we were right on time. Pace of play was about 4 hours. We waited on no one and no one waite... Continue »

Haven't played Wilson in over 20 years so it was a real thrill to get out today. Had a 7:00 am tee time and we were right on time. Pace of play was about 4 hours. We waited on no one and no one waited on us. I love the lay out. I forgot about how long it can play from the blues. Greens rolled ok but there are a lot of undulations that make some of the greens tricky. Fairways were just ok. A lot of bare spots on a lot of fairways but some of the fairways were perfect. Tee boxes were good. Well maintained and the sand traps were soft. Seemed to be a combination of sand and dirt. You have to realize this is a muni and it gets a lot of play so conditions are what they are but its still a nice track to play. Non resident senior rate was $33. All in all, a great day. Nice folks at the starter's window and good food in the restaurant. Will look to come out here again.

Played today and last Saturday teeing off at around 7:00 am each time. Almost exactly four hours POP each time. The course is in good shape. The fairways showed muddy areas from the rains, some of which were roped off. Otherwise, the fairways have greened up from the extra water. There was not much roll though; the course was wet and playing long. The rough is tough. It was a little lower this week so finding the ball was easier. No bunkers today but the sand was pretty good last week. The tee areas were fine.

The greens were very nice today. Some bumps but most of the time true. Undulating and decently fast. The strength of the course.

I enjoyed the round both times. What morning golf should be.
