Played on 3/24, on a deal that had going because they recently aerated the greens. I thought the course was pretty good. I love the layout, as most holes are unique. And I like the challenges the different holes offer, as well as the narrow, hilly aspects of it. Lots of elevation changes, and several holes I was choosing 3W or even 3H instead of driver. (I played the whites so as to join the two-some that were playing up. It does make the course a little short). The conditions were pretty good, imho. The pair I was with were disappointed by the fairways, which they might have been right about - the fairway was more like cut low rough than a nice polished fairway. I didn't mind though, as I never saw a bad lie all day. I play this course about once a year, and I think its been improving each time. The course usually has a deal on click4teetimes, and I think its worth it for that. The normal rack rate might be a stretch unless conditions are more consistent, as it sounds like it is based on the other reviews. I'd certainly play again for the $50 I paid, and would have no problem up to $80.

Played Black Gold 2/18/2014 with a two for one coupon so my uncle and I split the rack rate of an 87$ weekday rate. I'll start off by saying that, as always great customer service. Well mannered and polite. POP was 4.5 hours.
Now for the bad. The course is in really bad shape in my opinion. For the green fees they charge you would think it would be a course that is better taken care of. I've played this course off and on since it's opening and it has never been what it used to be. The greens were pretty good. A few bad spots and a little bumpy at times. I really like the layout here but I tend to stay away due to the price compared to quality issues.

2. Tee to green the course is in good shape. I couldn't really complain about anything on the course.
3. Pace of Play. Holy moly. Ive played this course maybe 4 times in my life and everytime I play here it is the slowest round ever. Yesterdays round took 5:20. It was rather frustrating to watch. I honestly don't know what to do about it on this course. They have their tee sheet at 9 minutes apart per group so that on the better side for southern California but no matter what the course is slow. No marshalls on the course at all.

I played this course on 1/18/2014. I would have to agree with previous reviews that the golf course is disappointing based on what they charge for a round. The fairways are in decent condition though there were quite a few thin spots. The rough was inconsistent. On the good side though the bunkers were great and some of the best I have seen. The greens were also in great shape and were fast and consistent on all but two holes. The customer service was good and the pace of play was excellent. They had a ambassador roaming the course keeping up the pace and we even got yelled at once after our group lost two balls on one hole. However, I see this as a positive if it means they are going to keep the pace of play under 4 hours. The course is definitely worth playing if you can get a reduced rate.

I have play Black Gold approx. 5 or so times, from the beginning of it's creation. I remember the fantastic quality is ONCE was.. So I had several of my friend buy the cyber Monday 2 round special ($109 - seemed to be a great buy). BOY was I embarrassed at the end of my round there , this last Wed. 1/15/14. Had a 7 am tee time. The Santa Anna winds were up so the course was going to be changeling for sure. I always remembered the first hole and the lush green fairways and rough. NO way. bare spots, fairways thin and rough yellow. i really do not understand why? the reclaim plant is right above the course. Is reclaimed water so expensive now? The price point this course charges, you would think they had enough money to water the fairways. The club house and the staff were very helpful and professional. Driving range was nice, though them made us hit off mats, and the balls needed to be changed out. Speed of play was great. Never waited and did not feel like we were slow. I am writing this review because I was really let do on the quality of the course condition. I see deals often for 65-85, but if someone was to pay full price; WOW would they be upset. I play city course and I except the over use quality there, but the cost is $44. Black Golds fairway were really no better. (greens were better then a city course)

Played Black Gold Saturday at 10:44 on another beautiful Southern California day. Too bad I could not say the same for the course. I generally play Black Gold 4 or 5 times a year, and this has to be the worst shape the fairways and rough have ever been, including when they were changing the fairways to kikuyu. The fairways were for the most part worse than bare, generally dirt, and the rough was just unmowed clumps, sometimes you could not tell the difference between the fairway and the rough. Sand traps were the best part of the course

Too bad about the conditions cause I really enjoy the layout of the course and the views. The service was very good, from check in until the finish. Saw the cart girl several times during the round. I will wait to see more positive reviews on the course before I am back, although the group golfer, and other deals online. that are out there are a significant discount to rack rate

Played 12/29/13. Last round of the year, so birdie on 18 was a good way to go out.

Fairways are spotty, still too many thin or hardpan lies. Variety of lies in fairway is frustrating. Rated 5/10.

Rough is undefined in spots and again, you'll get a variety of lies and grass type. Rated 6/10.

Sand bunkers I found were good to very good. Well maintained and right amount of sand, but a bit inconsistent. #4 greenside a little heavy, but # 18 greenside was light and near perfect. Rated 8/10.

Tees are level, but thin is spots, but nothing to complain about. Rated 7/10.

One of my favorites in the area. Great customer support, inside and out. Very good practice areas (Grass driving range, and 2 other chipping / putting areas near #1, and behind #18). Great views and elevation changes, and good variety of holes and tee box options. Enjoy.

Played at 12:30 on Wednesday, 12/4/13, on a cool sunny day with occasional light breezes. Paid $45 thru the BG website. Joined a twosome of an Orange resident and his FIL from Germany - very nice guys, and we enjoyed our round. I know BG is in "transition" to new fairway grass, but how long is this going to last? I can't remember the last time we had decent lies in the THIN fairways - that is, when they weren't bare dirt patches - I'm sure it's at least 2 years. Greens were OK, very firm and really quick downhill - I really think these types of green speeds slow down play because they are too extreme for most players. Sand was good (but see below), tees level and in good shape, rough along the fairways and greens of uniform height and generally OK. We ran into lots of ballmarks left unrepaired, especially on the back nine, and many instances where traps were not raked. Laughed at the deep ballmark 18 inches from the cup on #7 - it's easy to miss that one, right!? And the unraked area in the trap next to #13 green, with a rake 2 feet away!! You just have to shake your head. POP was always going to be an issue as we teed off right at the back of the "maybe we can finish 18" window. Too dark to see on #18 so we packed it in - POP was 4.5+ hr. Generally recommended.
