Played on Friday, May 14th. I agree with ASTI1019, not the best bargain. They used to promote the course as the best deal in the O.C. I guess they had to raise additional money for the unfinished club house. To be fair, they have put money into the driving range area.
Friendly service through out. Cart girl needs to drive the course more.
Greens are smooth. Fairways vary from thin too full. Sand trap bunkers are average at best. The lay out of the course makes it fun and challenging for the average golfer.
Even with the non bargain price will play again.

It's not that this is a bad course, I just don't know how it keeps getting such good reviews and billed as "best deal in Orange County". The quality of the course doesn't fit the green fees as there are multiple bare and thin areas throughout the track, pace of play is slow and often many of the players are rude. If they would channel some of their high green fees into maintenance it could be the course they bill it as---if not, just put reasonable green fees into effect. It appears to me that the green fees are just to keep the average golfer away from an otherwise mediocre track.

Played Saturday here partly based upon "Great" conditions rating on this site. The conditions were actually "Good". The greens were in great condition, but the fairways were thin with some brown spots, the sandtrap's had crusty sand and some tees were uneven, They are in the process of remodeling the clubhouse. The 18th hole has been shortened since the last time I played here with a new green. The old 18th green is the putting green.

Pace of play was 4:40. Customer service is another matter. When we finished our group was scolded by the starter for playing a 6 hour round. When we told the guy that we went out (at) 9:OO and finish (at) 1:40 which is 4 Hours and 40 min. The response we got was whatever, you should have played faster. Anyway this put a bad ending to what was a good day. Needless to say i wont be going back, the customer service was a JOKE. Nice job San Juan Hills.

I'd like to tip my hat to the Golf Course Superindendent and staff at San Juan Hills. The greens here are excellent and the course is always in outstanding shape. I keep coming back and am never disappointed in the condition of the course.
Lets keep things in perspective, with the overly high prices of public courses here in the OC, this is great place to play with a challenging layout, hilly terrain and greens that are as good as any public course around. Nice new clubhouse, improvements to hole #18 and the driving range are all well done. Watch out on the range as they have hitting areas on both ends!

As always we appreciate the honest post from t25452 and he should know we use his feedback (good and bad) in our weekly staff meetings.

As he noted we have just completed an extensive renovation of our driving range including the additions of a new 13,000 sf grass hitting area, new practice chipping green and fairway/greenside bunker (on the back end of our range) and new target greens throughout the range. In addition, we are completing a remodel of the clubhouse that will include a new kitchen, sports grill, large banquet/tournament room and outdoor patio. The clubhouse and golf course are 100% open during this remodel.

Thanks for pointing out that the greens and tees are in excellent condition and I will add that the majority of the fairways and roughs are also in great condition for this time of year.

Regarding the fairways. San Juan Hills is constantly trying to improve turfgrass conditions throughout the course. Currently we are undergoing a Bermuda fairway turf restoration project and unfortunately there are a few areas that have not been completely restored. I want to assure our golfers that we have identified these area and you will see continued improvement in the coming months. In that effort, we have again budgeted significant additional dollars for this project and have a new fleet of maintenance equipment on order that includes a few new machines that we did not have in the past. We will not let our friends and customers down!!

I love this course. Been playing here for many years and it never disappoints. I play with a group of women who are all ex-college players and we like this course because it rewards well-hit shots and punishes the misses. The greens are always in top condition. Fairways get a little thin in spots in the winter, but for the money that's perfectly OK. Overall the course is well-maintained and the layout is great. Clubhouse staff is always friendly and helpful. The only complaint we have is that they just spent a bunch of money on the clubhouse. They should have spent it on the golf course! I'll never understand why golf course operators think the clubhouse is a key draw for golfers. I've never met a golfer who wouldn't trade a cheesy clubhouse for a fabulous course. Get a clue guys - it's ONLY about the course itself.

OK, I don't know who these people are who are bashing this course, but they really need to get some perspective. San Juan Hills is a great course for the money and it's always in the best condition overall of any comparable and comparably-priced course in SoCal. The greens are excellent all year round and they do a great job with fairways in the winter. You want overseeding and brand new green grass all year round? Join a country club! Or pay twice as much at a public course. Even without overseeding the whole thing, the fairways are in generally great shape for winter. I play regularly, all around Orange and San Diego counties, and I always come back to San Juan Hills because I know that I can count on it to be in good shape year-round. I just had a group of friends from Chicago in town for golf and we played SJ Hills twice because they all liked it better than the other courses we played. Times are tough for golf courses, people. Fewer customers means less money for maintenance. Whoever maintains this course is doing a great job with what they have.
