Walked on at 2pm. The course is in good shape. Greens are healing well. Finished in under 4 hours. The starter got me out right in front of a high school match. I really appreciated that.

Played Friday, 3/16 at 1:30pm, $39 w/cart twilite rate via their web site. My playing partner and I were joined by another twosome and teed off a little ahead of schedule, teeing off about 1:25pm. Had short waits on most holes/shots. Things picked up a bit on the back 9, as two players dropped out ahead of us, and we finished in 4.5hrs. Course conditions were very good overall. White teeing areas were generally good and cut nicely, but a few had unlevel areas to deal with, including #s 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15. Worst feature of the course. They did resolve the unlevel teeing areas on #s 14 & 18 last year, and those areas are really nice, notwithstanding the divots on the par 3s. Fairways were pretty typical condition for the course - good, generally cut shortish. A little softer than usual due to the recent rain, but still provided good roll-out and decent lies. Well-marked GUR areas in most cases. Rough was cut short, so not too penal when you were just off the fairway. Further away, the rough became unkempt, dry and bumpy, and provided challenging lies. Was in a good sampling of bunkers, including on #s 2, 5, 6 (fairway) and 8. Sand was very consistent and good. A little deeper than I would like before you got to a firm base - about 2", the sand was medium-weight. Needed a little more clubhead speed for a good shot (I will try to remember this point for next time, as I ended up barely getting out of a few). Greens weren't the smoothest I've seen here, nor the fastest (thankfully). But, they were in very good shape, very green, and held shots well. Medium-fast on the day, really a pleasure/challenge to putt on. Made some, missed some. Trixie, the notorious and enjoyable cart lady was by several times. Always a pleasure. The friendly starter was making his marshal rounds later, and saw him on the 11th. Weather ended up being nice enough - no rain on the course, certainly chilly for parts when the wind was 2-3 clubs at times, but when the sun was out, had to take off a layer.

Played at 2:20pm on Thursday, 9/28/17 – looks like I was a couple hours behind GKer leef2020. I’m playing in a tourney next week and I was looking to get some swings in around a packed schedule – SJH is scraping the bottom of the barrel for me because I just don’t get along with the all-kikuyu-all-the-time turf here, but it fit my needs for proximity, cost, and availability. It was a warm, sunny and breezy afternoon. You can’t book a single on their website, so I just showed up during a period when their site indicated they had several open slots – I paid $39 with cart and was joined on the 2nd tee by another amicable single Jacob, and we slowly moved along behind another casual twosome, joining them on the 7th tee and spending the rest of the day behind a very slow foursome, finishing just ahead of darkness in ~4:40. Didn’t see a marshal all day.

For all the kikuyu the course was in pretty decent shape. Tees were OK, with most being level. Fairways were thin and firm, but generally gave OK lies – I was in 2 divots(!). Rough was mostly fairly short and played OK; when the grass got a little deeper on green slopes and sidehills the ball tended to sit down in the grass and was chancy to hit from. There were some scattered bare areas in fairways and rough. Sand was plentiful in all traps (I was in several) and for the most part was heavy and damp – shots frequently stayed in their pitch mark or fried-egged it, making recoveries stressful. Only in one trap did we have dry, mushier deep sand.

Greens were firm, rolled at medium+ speed (esp. downhill), and were pretty bumpy as we went through the back nine. The set of par-3s here are challenging due to length and defenses. Holes 13-15 are the “new” holes here, added after flooding in the 90s took out several holes along the river, and these new holes are very narrow and constrained by topo and homes, and overall conditions there are chancy. Lots of unrepaired ballmarks and unfilled divots, and there were no sand refills available as we made the turn.

Played on Saturday, 9/23, 11:00 am. Course staff was incredibly welcoming and expressed they were running early, allowing us to get out about 15 min ahead of our tee-time. Great start... Tee boxes were about 70/30 as far as most being level and for the most part in good shape with the exception of about 2 tee boxes that really needed work. Course has done a fair job getting through the summer. Some fairways were in good shape, some were a disaster with what seemed like half of the typical landing areas in complete disarray. Greens seemed relatively soft for the Orange County area, and most were in very good shape, rolling quicker than one would expect. Some good undulation and good pin placement made this the most enjoyable part of the course. However, there were two or three greens that really needed work, especially 18, with the number of ball marks and bruises within 15-20 ft of the hole. Assuming this was a product of what appear to be a small morning outing and not indicative of the normal maintenance. Areas around the greens were similar to fairways, some in good shape, and some not so much. Of the three green-side bunkers I played out of, all three were consistent and had a good amount of sand. The course layout is unique and interesting (having water in play on several holes and consistent elevation change is a huge plus, but the placement of par 3's is a bit odd). Course is also fairly narrow in some areas, but wide open in others. Definitely not a long course and the elevation change adds some yardage from the blues, but not enough to make it overly challenging. Definitely the kind of course you play better the second or third time around. That said, the pace of play was atrocious – the worst such experience I've had in the last few years on a golf course. There were THREE par 4s, one par 5, and one par 3 in which we were the FOURTH group on that hole, waiting to tee off for nearly 20 min on two separate occasions (literally started to time it). On two of the holes the foursome behind us made it FIVE groups waiting on one hole. The groups in front were two threesomes and a foursome (ours was a threesome) – nothing out of the ordinary. Was some of that due to the late morning tee-time? Probably – but four to five groups on one hole is completely unacceptable regardless of the tee time. It was just very poorly managed by the golf course; the ranger came and drove by three separate times without saying a word. Considering the $60-80 price tag, this place is a bargain compared to other courses in the area, but I'm a huge believe in "you get what you pay for". This certainly holds true here, especially considering the pace of play. Would I play here again? Probably, but I would make sure it was really early AM to get the most out of this course.
