Played in a scramble tournament at Tustin Ranch Golf Club Wednesday. I thought the course was in great shape. Greens rolled smooth, held shots and were running medium-fast. Fairways, although starting to show some dryness in places, overall provided tight lush lies all day, the rough is pretty much non-existent, only about 1 or 2 inches long, but lush, the tee boxes, level, groomed nicely with some noticeable divot damage and the sand traps, moderate quality sand, very playable, groomed well.

As far as the layout, it’s a Ted Robinson design, really fun, fair, challenging track that is easy to walk. It features many multi-tiered greens with well guarded by bunkers and forced carries over water. Many risk/reward par 5s including my favorite hole on the course, #9, that tempts you with a 200 to 250 yard second shot approach over water with the clubhouse in background. It’s a course where being long off the tee is a big advantage but can equally wreck havoc on your scorecard if you start missing the fairways which normally results in being behind trees, in a fairway bunker or worst, OB. Be careful not to launch drives OB as the course is pretty much surrounded by condos. Nice thing is you don’t feel encroached upon by the condos but they are significant presence while playing. Tustin Ranch Golf Club is a flat layout and features something you don’t find as significant in CA as in the past, palm trees. They’re everywhere but mostly are planted close to the greens. It’s not uncommon to just miss a green and find yourself with a palm tree trunk in your line. Another positive about the layout is it has good mix of tee boxes for all skill levels. In fact they even have two short executive course tees within the front and back nine where they allow play 1 ½ hours within the first tee time of the day and 2 hours prior to sunset. The call it the Big Easy and the rates to play it are very affordable.

You know I read a lot of reviews here where golfers complain the General Public Green Fees are too high. Well, it’s designed to be that way because this is a simi-private course primarily focused on serving the surrounding businesses and residential community. If it’s a course you see yourself playing often, then you can get a 6 month membership for around $250 which instantly give you up to 50% off on green fees and many other savings/benefits.

I also read a lot of reviews of people taking advantage of the Free Birthday Golf special. IMO, bar none, it’s the best birthday golf special I’ve ever seen. You get free golf, free cart, free lunch and range balls. BUT in addition, you can also bring up to 11 guests with you that day that only have to pay the MEMBERS rate. Tustin Ranch is not a course where you are going to find radically slashed wholesale tee times, coupons and so forth. They take pride in their product and provide their best deals directly to you…which of course is their Free Birthday Golf with the option of bringing guests and Memberships.

Overall great course and experience I highly recommend.

Tee boxes were level and lush ball sat up.
Fairways were perfect, ball sits up nicely. Rough wad not too penal. Was around an inch or two. Greens rolled true and was medium fast. Only bad part about the course were the bunkers, it might have been because it was early but, the bunkers were muddy. Will come back again. It was great that I was able to walk this course.

Customer service is A+ from the starter, pro shop, and the maintenance crew. First one to tee off thursday morning(550 AM). Course is in good shape from tee boxes to greens. Greens roll true, fairways were firm, sand has sand in them, and teeboxes were manicured. Finish the round in under 1 and half hours.

Played a birthday round here on a perfect So Cal May day, a little overcast to start, sunny and not too hot by about 11:00. for those that do not know, you get a free round on your birthday, and everyone else in your group plays for the member rate, so it is a great deal.

I am a high handicap, but the course, is not too tough. A little narrow in areas with some protected greens, but nothing like the target golf I find at some other places. The course was in great shape, and the service was very good all the way around. They do a good job is spacing groups. We had to wait on a few holes for the very slow group in front of us, but were only pressed a few times from the group behind. we were never stacked up 2 groups deep on the tee box.

Birthday Golf! These guys run a fantastic promotion with the free birthday round. These guys are accommodating, friendly and make you feel like a special customer, kudos to the Tustin Ranch staff as really understand customer service at every step. (Very Refreshing).
One caveat- I do hit balls here when the grass is open, and there is a fella that works in the range shop that is a complete and utter jerk-off (if you've talked to the guy you know who he is)

As for the course, layout was not remarkable, nor vividly memorable from many tees (except for the watery par 3). But it wasn't bad either. With that being said, a very quality establishment. *Sorry for the flip-flop answers, but for that kind of money people should really demand a great layout.

I was most impressed with the conditions of the greens & bunkers. Unfortunately I lived in the traps last Monday, but was quite possibly the best quality bunkers i've played, since the days of working at Seattle GC in high school. It should be noted that the greens were smooth and really quick.

I would love to consider this track as my home course but the reality is for the kind of money they ask for, its just not worth it.

Though, everyone should make it a point to play on your b-day!
