Wow! What happened to this place? The tee boxs were as furry as a shag carpet. The greens while reasonably decent are so slow, it's like putting on velcro. Lots of bare spots in the fairways and rough. This course is tough enough without having to fight bad conditioning. Playing the black tees, the fairways are so soggy, the ball just plugs with no roll, and when you get to the greens, they are so slow, you still don't have enough stick to get it to the hole. Love the views, the challenge, but unless they improve this place, hard to justify a return visit.

Played today, Tuesday August 8, 2006. While it was a great day to play, the course was not. For the first time in awhile, I was really, really disappointed in playing my backyard course. The tee boxes were a 5, the fairways were a 5, but what was really bad were the greens. The greens were really sandy and bare. I agree with the two previous posts-this course is a really nice place to play and it is only a few steps away from becoming a high-end type of course.

Course officials need to get on the ball and get this course maintained. One thing though, make sure you join the Men's club there, it is only $49 and you get a free round, a birthday round, and $10 dollars off green fees during regular and twilight times. (Do I sound like I work for the club?)

Played the morning of Sunday July 11th. First thing to note is the very casual attitude about getting on. Walked in as a single and it was basically, “that’ll be $80”, took my money and then “enjoy your round.” No mention of a tee time or who I would be joining. He did mention a couple of foursomes on the tee box. It was, however, every person for him or herself, and I joined a twosome that was just teeing off. In terms of the course itself, I agree with the previous post. This course is just a few steps away from being one of the top affordable high-end tracts in southern California, but is lacking from attention. The fairways were in generally good condition. A few small bare patches here and there, but more obvious was the tire damage. The fact that these gashes are still around after the previous June 25th review shows a general lack of caring on the part of the people in charge of maintenance. Also the bunkers were pretty much hard tack. Fortunately, I avoided them in my round, but goodness help the golfer who lands in one. The greens were slow and a little bumpy. Despite that, I putted well, once I got used to smacking the ball harder than is prudent. The tee boxes, as mentioned, were unkept and bushy. I would have to call the rough pretty fair. It wasn’t impossible to hit from, but was punishing enough for long approach shots. I wouldn’t rate this course in its current condition and incarnation worth $80 on weekends. What I think you’re paying for are some of the best non-ocean views in southern California. But I do think it’s a generally very good, interesting and fair layout, which will challenge your game. More attention to overall maintenance would make it worth its current rate (but then they would bump up the price, wouldn’t they.) By the way avoid the hot dogs at the turn. The one I got was over-boiled and generally uninspiring and sat like a lump in my stomach for several holes.

Played Hidden Valley Sunday June 25th and in all honesty was thoroughly disappointed. This track has a great layout and the potential to be a great playing experience. However, the course was in terrible condition. Where do I begin? All of the greens were furry, very slow and looked to be dying in many places. Not too mention it seemed as if the last time the greens were rolled was months and months ago leaving them very bumpy. The green on hole 6 showed tire track damage and it was nothing short of severe. The fairways were OK, but there were a lot of dead spots and large chunks of fairway were damaged. It looked as if someone had taken a shovel and went to town at random points on every fairway; similar to what Oregon golf course fairways look like after a long rainy winter. Tee boxes were uneven and looked as if they hadn't been cut in awhile. Sand traps were either hard as a rock or had standing water. All in all, it was a disappointing experience for the money paid and I would not recommend this course until they have someone take a serious look at course maintainence and rectify the problems. If Course Management does get the course in proper condition, it has the potential to be rank up there with some of SoCal's top public courses in my opinion.

Played today, Tuesday, May 2, 2006. Although it was a really good day to play, greens were super SLOW. Also, played from the tips and the black tee boxes were 70's Playboy bushy. Fairways were nice, but the rough was really long.

Greens really need to be mowed. I don't know if the staff at Hidden Valley reads this website, but if they do (I was told they do), they really need to get on the ball and mow the greens. Additionally, greens were also spongy in some areas.

On the back nine, some of the sage brush and weeds are starting to grow back into the cart path and needs to be cut.

Overally, a great day (once I got used to the slow greens), and always a pleasure to play my backyard course.

For some reason, playing at Hidden Valley today kinda reminded me of playing Oak Valley (Beaumont) back in the mid-90's when they had the trailer shack as the clubhouse before the nines were reversed. Remember that?
