I haven't been out here in over a decade when it was the SCGA course... it was clear that the SCGA put $$$$ into it to maintain. Throughout the round I was pondering what I would really rate this course based on GK's condition rating.

Unfortunately, 5.5 is pretty close. There are holes that can be considered a solid 7 condition rating... and that is pretty good. Then some holes are on the 3-4 condition rating.... on those holes...tee boxes are really shaggy.

75% of the greens are smooth and fast pending on the pin positions....yet some greens have large patches of bare dirt. It is a shame b/c the course design is great in my opinion.

Check in wise, everyone was polite and cheerful. I am hoping that the conditions improve and will try to go out here more often to support this course.

Sunday morning round in 4.5 hours. We usually get out when the sun comes up because of the slow play you can encounter at this course. The staff is semi friendly and the carts and practice facilities and adequate. The tee boxes were all in need of a trim but had good shaggy coverage. The rough is thick in places and doesn't exist in others. The fairways ranged from thin and spotty to thick and fluffy. It really depends on where your drive off the tee ends up as to what type of lie you'll have. Even good shots can end up with a crappy lie in the middle of some fairways here at the Ranch. The traps are all well trimmed and MOST actually have pretty good sand in them. I had the chance to hit from several of them and they all have a good fluff and were well raked. The greens are really starting to slide with a few having bare spots and others shrinking as the other grasses are being allowed to take them over. The speed of the greens was slower than usual and some were a little bumpy with the bare sections and numerous ball marks. Other greens that are not hit often were in better condition but still not what you used to experience here. The green fees being charged are probably a little more than what is being offered nowadays. The facility is really starting to slip.

Early morning Sunday round in 4.5 hours. The new carts are now the highlight of the course. The staff is friendly and practice facilities are small but adequate. The tee boxes were mostly dry and shaggy from start to finish. The boxes on few holes had very little turf and others had thin six inch shag? The rough was fairly long on a a few holes but most had little and it was a very thin mix of grass with weeds. The fairways ranged from nice with good lies to mostly thin with little grass and lots of weeds. The sand traps were almost all littered with pebbles and rocks. Many of the fairway bunkers were hard pan dirt! The greens are still the best part of the course. The greens held good shots and rolled nicely with a few being a little on the bumpy side. They have removed sections of the fairways on a couple holes on the front nine which really doesn't affect play but looks pretty sad. The course is still treading water locally against the competition but offers reasonable rates.

The services at the Golf Course was country clubish. From the guy in the pro shop to the carts to the range. The service was impeccable. The greens were a bit bumpy, but not many ball marks. Most golfers there must be good about repairing their ball marks.

The course looked a bit tired, but in this day of a water shortages, trying to get people to work, they exceeded my expectations.

Sunday morning round in a surprising four hours!! The staff was friendly today and they have new carts since my last visit. The carts have no gps but are comfortable and new. The tee boxes went from thin and sandy to lush and firm. There was only really one or two boxes that were not level. The rough was not very long when and where you found yourself in it, as there was not much to be found. Fairways were a mixture of everything but surprisingly had pretty good coverage and provided mostly decent lies. A few of the holes had turf peppered with clumps of green grass that made playing it where it lied not realistic. The traps have always been in sad to really sad shape with tons of pebbles and rocks. There were actually so many in most traps that you would have to remove them from around your ball or risk scarring up your clubs. The greens are always the best thing that this course has for the players. They are punching them this week but we were really happy with the condition they were in. The greens were a little bumpy and were noticeably slower than usual but had very few ball marks and held shots well. The layout and elevation changes here really do make this a nice place to play when the course conditions are passable. The rates are reasonable for what they are offering and the pace of play was from a dream compared to most rounds I've played here. They are working on a few holes on the course which is nice to see. Worth a try with the better weather in the coming months.

Played on 10/02/21 and although I like this track it’s apparent the greens are in trouble. most greens have bare spots that are sanded in good size areas. In most cases you have to putt through this area, or move your ball adjacent to the area because it’s unplayable. The customer service remains poor and you never hear or see their management on the course checking the conditions let alone the customer’s experience. It feels like this place is going to be sold soon, it’s too bad, it used to be a good track and well kept.

HORRIBLE SHAPE. Understanding courses are punching greens this time of year we asked if they had aerified recently. They said in August. As we checked in we asked condition of greens and course. Response was “punching fairways so they may be rough and greens have slight Fungus issue on some edges.” Well the punched fairways would have been ok if they had bothered to mow plugs instead of just leave them fairway creating very muddy conditions. Greens complex’s have Fungus not just on edges but throughout entire green. Roughly 75% of greens severely affected. No value for the green fee we paid. Course may be back in shape in spring of 2022. Avoid at all cost.

Early morning round today in a little over four hours was NICE for this course. The staff is friendly enough but the carts continue to slide down the rating scale. Our cart was missing a windshield today. The tee boxes were all level with adequate coverage. The rough is fairly thick and pretty long on most holes which actually devoured a couple shots today. The traps were in great condition with rakes in most of them. A couple of the traps were damp but all were very playable. The greens were extremely damp and very bumpy this morning. The footprints were visible and there were ball marks in need of repair. The greens were our only real gripe today as the conditions here continue to improve! The rates are reasonable as well in comparison to the other local valley courses.

Played the Golf Club at Rancho California on Tuesday afternoon twilight with a work colleague after some meetings in the Murrieta area. It was my first ever visit to this course and I was properly impressed by the design and many of the conditions on display. It was also a steal paying $37 each with cart to experience this Robert Trent Jones 'unpolished' gem.

First off the layout is really terrific. You get it all. Want elevations? Want uphill approach shots? Want narrow driving lanes? Want blind tee shots? Want water hazards? Want intimidating bunkers? Want a few breathers? You will be absolutely tested here and will need to make incredibly wise club selections all day long.

When it comes to current course conditions though, you're really going to see two different courses. The front nine was actually in terrific shape with really nice greens, proper lush fairways (for the most part) and incredibly white, fluffy sand in the bunkers. At some point after the turn though, I noticed that the bunkers suddenly became more Montebello-esque, the greens spongy and a tad bit bumpy, and the tee boxes a little more wild. I'm not sure why or how this happens, but we were surprised by the inconsistency.

But overall very playable and a lot of fun. A game required!

POP was very nice as we started with a 3:15 tee time, let a single pass us on the 8th hole, then never looked back for the rest of the day. We never waited on any shots after that, nor did we have anyone behind us relatively close. It was pretty ideal and translated into finishing well before sunset which was optimal.

Did not have any time to check out the amenities as we arrived shortly before our tee time, but I would not hesitate for a second to come back here again and try to have a much better back nine with a little course knowledge that would go a long way here. I will be back!
