Played this 6 words-in-the-name course Saturday AM with the Dawgs. Waited on most holes in a 5 hour round. I'll start by saying the food and service were very good ... friendly, hard-working people here. The rest is downhill. I haven't played here for a decade ... I remember when the SCGA called it their home course, it was well conditioned and stunning to the eye. Not now. Even after all the rain this winter, the fairways are drying out and semi-shaggy. Rough was not cut in a long while and was mostly crab grass type stuff. Visually, unappealing. In two bunkers which were in good shape, I will give them that. The RTJ design is challenging and well thought out ... the bones are intact but the skin is wrinkled and dry.

The greens were not in good shape. Not fully healed from aeration ... bumpy but still very firm, so very hard to keep putts online, however, my partner was making everything ... so go figure.

Anyway, it may be another decade before I return, especially with that drive (out/in) on the 91. A ton of people have moved out here (houses everywhere ... when did this happen?!?) and there's only the 15 to get in or out. Brutal commute ... could not imagine doing this every day. My apologies.

After three hours and only nine holes completed....I remembered why I don't play here very often!! The course itself is in very nice shape - just wish management had a clue. Maybe they need to start groups off every ten or twelve minutes or properly marshal the course? Tee boxes were in very good shape with good coverage, a couple were a little firm. Fairways were nice and green in real good shape but did not have nearly the usual roll with the thick grass. The rough was exactly that - rough! Like most courses after all our rain the rough is very thick, lush and green. Wayward shots became an Easter egg hunt and hitting your ball from it was a challenge. The bunkers were well maintained but very crusty go top? Hitting shots from the bunkers was not difficult but the traps seemed to be crusted over from watering? The greens were great - they held shots well but putted slightly slower than in past rounds. The staff here is always friendly and great to talk with. There were a couple holes on the back nine that have been taken over by the geese - nice to look at but they leave poodle size droppings on the greens which makes putting impossible.

1/26 1st of 9 birthday rounds with my regular golf buddy Kris whos birthday is 2 days after mine--Big shout out to the staff really made us feel welcome and the info about course conditions--talked to them 3 days before and informed that there would be limited restrictions for carts and some water in some traps but otherwise ready for play.
90 degree in effect--fairways were soft but with very few wet or muddy spots except for 17 where the creek really overflowed coming into play for the landing area for the 2nd shot. Very playable might have limited roll a bit but no plugging. Not much rough along fairways--- heavy at times around or behind the greens.
Tees level in decent shape. Yes the traps were wet and the low spots had mud or water. Found 3 green side and even moving to a more groomed area they were typically rather packed and had mud mixed in--hit one heavy-got out but short of the green--hit one thin bounced off the mud and went 4 feet over the green into some of that heavy rough and the last out to 10 feet but missed the putt.
Greens were really good fast to medium fast smooth and receptive for high shots--but chips and pitches tended to roll out. Big greens with varying quadrants which can provide for challenging putts with speed and line coming into play--generally not good to be above the hole.
POP less than 4 hrs with no one around. Fantastic $20 deal well worth the hour 20 to drive from san clemete having to go down and around with ortega highway closed.

Played here for the first time as part of the SCGA One Day series. Our 8:00am shotgun start was delayed by heavy fog until 9:15am. Let's start with the good...the greens rolled pretty well since being punched just over a month ago. Also, I was in 4 green side bunkers and sand was very good. I hit one fairway bunker and it had a ton of rocks in it. Now the not so good parts... the fairways were thin and had many bare spots. The rough was inconsistent and very thin. Recently, the areas around each green had been plugged. The players were instructed to lift & place if we landed in one of these areas, which were a few yards away from each green. The tee boxes were terrible because they hadn't been moved in a couple of days. Divots everywhere. Other areas on many of the tee boxes looked green and almost untouched, which was odd. POP was 4:45 which wasn't bad for a shotgun. I don't plan on returning to this course because of the less than average turf conditions.

Greens need a little more time to heal. Bumpy in many spots but it seemed the Back greens were much better than the front 9. Course is 1 to 10 (10 being phenomenal) I rated this course today a 5 yes a 5

I always enjoy playing this course mostly because I've played it often and know some of the better places to hit the ball. The greens are in really good shape right now but they are a little slow. The fairways and rough are showing a lot of wear from this past summers heat and what I assume is the courses attempt to save water. The bare spots don't really come into play unless you hit the ball well out of the fairways but if you play mostly down the middle and hit the greens regularly on your approach shots you will have a good time. The bunkers appear to have some fresh sand in them that needs to be shaped and smoothed out because I found them to be bumpy and bare in some areas.

Played here on THURS at 8 AM on a cool, cloudy and windy day but no rain. Greens: medium to slow, bumpy but holding. Fairways: about 1/2 the fairways have been punched and they were starting to "drag" them to break up the plugs. Traps: just OK most have decent sand. Rough: some bare spots, some punched, 2-3" high. POP: just at 4 hours, the marshall came by 4 times to check our progress. Good customer service in the Pro shop and the starter. I've seen the course in better condition but its OK for this time of the year .

This is a great course. Tee boxes great. Bunkers great shape and well maintained. Nothing I hate more is a bunker that has no sand. A three putt ranks up there too, but it is very frustrating to have your club skip in a bunker. Fairways were in very good condition. You will have a good lie most of the time. The ruff is what it should be. Punishing but not unreasonable. I had a great time today.

Played yesterday, Sunday. Had a great time, love this layout. Little bit of everything, grip and rip it to target shots. Hills, doglegs, water, etc. Good POP, about 4.5hrs on a sunday is acceptable.

Overall, in playable shape, we had a golfsoutherncal.com deal, 45$ with range balls is a fair deal for a weekend. Wouldn't want to pay much more right now. Teeboxes were the low point, major work, overseeding and closures for most of the black tees, they were pretty much with the blues half of the time and in very poor condition, about a month and they should be back to normal. Fairways were in ok shape, little burnt out in many spots, but usually had good lies. Rough was thick and lush, bermuda not quite all the way dormant yet, so your ball lays down and you need a good whack to get it out, but it was managable. Found 2 traps, they didn't look good, but they were just fine, good cushion underneath so now issues, quite a few rocks, though. Greens were the highlight, looked like they aerated about a month ago, so they are recovering nicely. They held shots very well and putted with good speed, not much bump at all. Range was fine, they had the grass open, which is great, about half the balls kinda sucked, but that's normal anywhere. Service was good, especially in the grill room, she was super friendly and funny. Pro shop guys were friendly as well. Marshall was on top of things, No Beverage cart, but we stocked up at the turn and enjoyed ourselves afterward.

All in all, go ahead and get out there, especially if you can get a deal, few more weeks and it should be in real good shape.
