I have always enjoyed this course! Perhaps in part because I consider myself a decent bunker player, so didn't have any fear of all the sand traps. However the greenside bunkers today were not good! They were so wet, they were like playing out of mud or smoosh.

The greens has a layer of topdressing on them which did not affect the roll of the ball, very true in fact. However, playing early as I always do, the wet ball picked up all the grains and unless you wiped off the ball EVERY putt, the ball went only about 80% of the distance. Plus while the greens rolled true, due to the topdressing, they were much slower than I'm sure they would be later in the day. Tees and fairways were generally good, rough was hit or miss with quite a few bare areas. The course was green, looked better than it played.

Course was busy with the men's club going off the back nine at 7:30, so we had to do a lot of scrambling to negotiate the course to avoid the crowds. Despite not playing well, still enjoyed it, which is sometimes all we can hope for?

The good-greens were better than decent, a touch on the slow side but rolled smoothly and accepted approach shots. Pace of play was good and bunkers no worse than comparable courses.
The bad-indifferent customer service, they could really take a page from the folks at nearby Yucaipa. Lady at the snack bar is super grumpy.

The ugly-The fairways. Dear Lord, they are awful. Rock hard and overgrown with weeds. The whole course is GUR. "Rough" and tee boxes in equally bad shape. Need a hammer to get your tee in the ground.

Now...all that being said we paid $26 on an all inclusive special On a Friday morning for green fees, cart, range balls, unlimited beverages and a something to eat for lunch. That folks is a great value that makes up for some of the shortcomings of this course. I know the water shortage is mostly to blame for the conditions, but at least management recognizes the course isn't in great shape and prices things accordingly.

I have always enjoyed Shandin but haven’t been out there in some time largely because of the drive. Its only 45 minutes for me but most of my friends don’t like the drive out there so I went solo today and early on 6/24. Got there just before 6:00 am and noticed a twosome had already gone out. There was another twosome on the tee so the starter asked me to join them. I walked to the tee and said the starter asked me to join you and was about to introduce myself. At that point, the one guy went over to his partner to see if my joining them would be OK. He came back and said well, we’re really not very good; suggesting it would discourage me from playing with them. I said no worries that’s not why I play. So again he goes over to his partner to discuss and comes back says well, we’re in a hurry today and want to play fast and they took off. Kind of insulting really. Look, just say you don’t want to be joined without having to make up excuses. I usually enjoy walking on and meeting new people but in this case I was very glad they took off. So my choice was playing solo or joining the twosome behind me. I chose to walk solo. And by the way for as fast as they wanted to play, the twosome now ahead of me was very slow. I waited on them on just about every shot even though I was playing 2 or even 3 balls. All right enough of my BS and now to the course. The course clearly has been hit by the drought. Some of the portions of the fairways are very nice but the other half was hard pan. Playable but it was disappointing to see. The tee boxes were fairly thrashed and although that doesn’t really matter too much to me, it just takes away from the course a bit. Sand traps were a mix of hard pan and soft sand. Just needed to be lucky or unlucky as to which one you were in. The rough was thick and was difficult to find balls if they rolled into them. The greens were the best feature of this course. They were in great shape, were very soft and rolled true. They definitely give the greens sufficient water. One thing I forgot about this course was the freeway noise. Highway 215 runs right through the middle of this course and holes 2-5 are bit noisy. Customer service was not like it usually is. The starter was accommodating but the lady in the snack shack had a major attitude. Pretty unfriendly. Perhaps she should consider a different career! :-) Despite it all and as I mentioned earlier, I really like this course and hope one day it comes back to the condition it used to be. The layout is fun, is easy to walk and is challenging. I’ll definitely go back.

I haven't played this course for several years and was very disappointed on 4/26. The tee boxes were fair to poor with divots everywhere. The fairways okay to good condition, but there edges at the first cut bad. It was so bumpy, we were looking for a Chiropractor. The greens had been aerated recently, no problem as we were told at check in, but not when reservations were made. The bunkers were muddy or hard. The cart girl was no where to be found after 12:30. The pro shop staff was very friendly, and lunch was great!

Played Shandin Hills golf club today at twilight for a fee of $20 to walk. Teed off about 2:15. Pace of play was about 4:15,which was very good. Easy to find a level spot on every tee box, even though a couple of the par three's were a bit chewed up. A few were lush, but majority were just decent coverage.
Fairways had more bare spots than I'd prefer, but considering what I paid, it was okay. Hitting the fairway would result anywhere from a great, lush spot to hit from to very thin.
Rough isn't overly penal, for the most part pretty easy to hit out of. The issue here is predominately the burrowing critters that the rules book gives you free relief from, which is a godsend, lol.
Bunkers not terrific, thin coverage but was able to get club under ball with ease. Played far better than the appearance would suggest.
Now for the best part of the course, the greens! Unquestionably they are in the best condition I've seen them in 10 years! Very smooth, as fast as I've ever seen, held shots great! For the first time I felt the ball rolled true without bouncing offline due to bumpiness.
The new management company/team is doing a fantastic job in every aspect. I really appreciate the direction they are taking this golf club. Shandin Hills is leaps and bounds above where it was just a year and a half ago!

I have no quarrels with the prior review by JSpin, as the general conditions here are not as good as when I last played here. The greens are by far the best part of the course, and I don't recall the course having so many areas which really should be GUR.

Staff is always great and with the senior rate, hard to complain about the rates. Some courses just "fit your eye" and Shandin Hills has always been one of those courses for me. (Plus I love playing from greenside bunkers, which are tough to avoid if you play this track.)

They really need to invest in some grass seed. On the plus side, the greens were in nice shape-medium speed but rolled smoothly and accepted most approach shots. Bunkers surprisingly in good shape. Excellent service from the pretty girl in the bev cart. Very friendly and must have seen her 6 times on the back nine. Still, it's hard to justify returning here until playing conditions get better as competing courses nearby are in better shape for less cash.

Have been playing Shandin Hills for many, many years. For the most part it was usually in good to very good condition. I am very unhappy to report that it is in terrible condition. I am guessing it is due to no watering (because of the drought), but most of the fairways are not only extremely thin, but they are actually turning to pure dirt. This condition is very prevalent throughout the course. If they don't lay down some seed, and I mean quick, they will completely lose this course. Watering will not help as if the rains hit, they only thing that will be growing back is weeds.

Hello fellow golfers. I played Shandin Hills Sunday 10/25. Well, this course has a good layout and could be very difficult if they get it into shape. The course has elevation and some good views of the IE. This was my experience: The tee boxes were all moved up from the Blue marker. I think they are trying to grow some new grass. I think they need to close them all and level them out first. The fairways weren't that bad and had only a few bare spots and offered plenty of run. The greens rolled decent but could be faster and this would definitely make the course play harder especially if you got above the flag on some holes. Overall the course is worth playing if you wanna practice. I got lucky because I teed off after a men's club had just finished and had the whole course to myself after skipping a slow group in front of me on hole #2. You can play it but don't expect great conditions. Until next time.
