Do you think concrete and steel are as beautiful as flowers and grass? Do you prefer the sounds of progress over the sounds of wildlife? Shandin Hills has got you covered. Straddling the 215 freeway and pressed against a shockingly busy stretch of train tracks - there are few holes where some vehicle isn't moving in your peripheral vision.

I was worried about playing here since not much is said about this course, but was pleasantly surprised. Fairways were in mostly great shape, greens were smooth and consistent - also apparently the perfect speed for my putting style because even my misses stopped near the hole. Only $21 to walk during the week and an under 4 hour round was all I could hope for.

If you're a "miss left" person, you could have a miserable day because almost all the OB is left and it's in play. I found two errant shots overly punished by finding my ball snuggled against an OB fence even though the shots weren't terrible.

Tee boxes were, in general, a mess - it was weird because all the grass around them looked flatter and healthier then they were. The other big thing here is the bunkers - there are a lot and they are a main feature of this course. The heavy dirt that fills them makes them even more punitive than your average bunker and probably the biggest deficiency most golfers would point out.

According the group ahead of us that we met on the turn, if I had spend $14 more on my round, it would have included a cart, range balls, and food before, during and after the round. That's an amazing deal - and I was a bit jealous of those guys as they strained to pick up their tees and waddled to their cart on the 10th tee.

Inspired by the last review, made my way back out to Shandin Hills. Very cold, but at least there was no wind, and it seemed to keep some of the crowds away. I've always loved this course, in part because I consider myself a good bunker player and you can not play here without finding a few sand traps. Unfortunately the bunkers are not in great shape, need some sand and attention. Greens however were very nice. Not a lot to add to the last review, except that I too long the days when this course was in really nice condition, but perhaps with some rain this winter, we'll return to those days. Staff is always great here and the price is certainly right. What's not to like !

Heading out to Palm Springs for a tournament but on the way, we decided to stop and play Shandin. I usually walk for $20 but decided to take advantage of their deal, $34 which includes golf, cart, range balls and all you can eat from the snack bar. So a little breakfast before the round and then 4 hours later, lunch after the round. Interesting deal. I have always liked SH and was looking forward to playing. The starter said they had 2 inches of rain the day before but I always knew SH drains very well but IMO, the course is not in good shape. Aside from the fairways going winter dormant which is expected, they were many bad lies out there. Hardpan, thin grass; was not impressed. There is no rough. Its dormant grass or hard pan. Bunkers had turned to mud but attribute that to the rain the day before. The greens were nice as they usually are here. Looked like they sanded not too long ago but still rolled nicely and a bit fast really. I have always loved Shandin. The layout is a fun and challenging one and I remember the days when this course was the nicest around. Can’t say that now. I hope they are able to bring this back to the way to the way it was before.

Played here on Sunday 10/28/. Went out as a single and had no issues joining up with a twosome at 9:30 am. Got a great deal online for $40 with unlimited food and fountain drinks. Yes, I said unlimited. Had a good dog at the turn and a deli sandwich after the round for free.
Anyway, the course was in good shape and the greens were in great shape. Fairways rolled well with good coverage and the rough wasn't too high. Got in a few traps and they seemed decent as well. Overall I was impressed with the course, but the POP was the problem. Too many really bad golfers teeing it up from the blues and waiting for the green to clear on the par 5s when the drive didn't even reach the half way mark. Played with two nice guys that would not fix a divot if it was in plain sight even if it was clearly theirs. That really pisses me off. Come on guys, really! POP was 4 hours 40 minutes. Not terrible but could be much better. I'll be back though. All in all, a good day.

I played here today with my golf tournament club. The course in below average shape. The tee boxes are hard, not level and full of "hack" divots. The fairway is hard with some spots of a good lie. The rough is short, and playable. But there are a lot of dirt patches through out the course. The bunkers are firm and un-maintained, but the sand quality is okay. The greens are slow but roll true. The course reminds me of Paradise Knolls in many ways. The lay out is enjoyable, but the conditions are really below average.

Got out there today w an old friend PTPOG1973....let's just say we played nine and bounced. The heat didn't help..

Fairways full of dead areas, rough the usual clumpy, bumpy junky mess that is a mid to lower tier track. Greens rolled SLOW...they were punching behind us...so..maybe they were prepping them.
I used to like this course.....like back 9 much more than the front 9.
Paid $18 total on Golfnow Hotdeal..
Meh.....should have gone and hit balls. Although a few cold beers with an old friend was more than good enough to make up for my bad golf on a sub-par course.
Hopefully the conditions improve..
I'd pass for now......

Our regular group went out to play Shandin today and was looking forward to it even though the latest reviews and my last experience here were not very good. Had a 9:20 tee time. The club house attendant was a real nice guy and suggested I buy the $31 special which includes golf, range balls, breakfast and lunch. Being that we were on the tee in 10 minutes, I passed on the deal and just got the walking rate of $20. Good thing I passed as there was not any breakfast available. :-( The last time I was here, the place was not in very good shape. A better story today however and I was impressed with the progress. Fairways were in good shape overall and not with kikuyu. Understand they were not perfect but ok. Still a lot of brown areas and dried out spots but it has definitely improved. The rough was pretty much dried out. Most of the bunkers were very damp and rock hard. Disappointing actually. The tee boxes were in good shape also. The greens, although green and lush and rolled well, they were a bit slow and a bit grainy. I just think they needed a good mow because all of the greens were in good condition. I have always enjoyed playing Shandin. Like an old friend, I am always wanting to get out here and visit but was always discouraged by the poor course conditions. Still rough around the edges, I can say it is definitely trying to make a comeback. Summer heat and water restrictions will always hurt this course just like many other courses but but I was impressed with the progress thus far. I am definitely coming back.

Played here on a weekday morning $31 special that includes range balls, breakfast and lunch on a restricted menu. A good deal overall, but it seems the price popped up recently, perhaps due to the recent closings of Calimesa and San Bernardino.

Greens are slowish but roll ok and accept approach shots. I've always enjoyed this design but of late the conditions of the fairway and teeboxes have been really rough. Bunkers are also in poor shape.

One particular gripe I've got to air is about the condition of the rakes in the bunkers, they really need to be replaced. After playing out of the sand on #7, I used the rake to clean up and got stuck with numerous painful little plastic splinters on the handle because it was in such bad shape. Took a couple of days to get them all out. C'mon Shandin Hills.

Staff we encountered were mostly friendly and it does look like they're trying to do some maintenance on the back side. Let's hope for some improvement here.

Played here Sunday with my tournament club. We asked our group officer to confirm that the course was in good condition, because we had seen on GK that they had gone through MAJOR maintenance. The tournament director said it is in great shape...LIAR. Starting from the tee boxes, they where beat up and had so many dry out patches and major divots. They where also uneven lie on most of the tee boxes. The fairways had major GUR, but not marked, because they would have had to spray paint the whole fairway! The greens where okay, but slow, like very slow. If your putter is a sledgehammer, you could have got your ball to hold its line. the bunkers where playing like hard packed, concrete filled craters. I don't think I will come back here again. I was very disappointed with the overall conditions, because of the LIE. If these tournament directs would be more upfront and honest, I would respect that he says it is in major growth pattern, after re-seeding or maintenance, not tell us it is in great shape, when it is not.
