For the price the course is a good deal. They are doing a honest effort to clean up the place. Planting shrubs and using mulch to cover the areas that grass always died. It's not the longest course by any means. It gives a good challenge with shot shaping and may make you think twice about going for it. Good value. Course was green and in good shape. 11/21/14

Played Eastlake July 25th. I hadn't played here in over a year due to poor conditions but I figured that I would give it a shot after reading Centercut's review. Here are my thoughts:

The good:
The greens were the best part of the course. They were well maintained on most of the 18 holes. I still love the layout of this course and think they did a good job with most of the holes to keep them challenging and unique. The fairways on the first 3 holes were excellent. They were lush so I assumed that it would be like that the rest of the round. Unfortunately, after hole 4 (par 3), hole #5 fairway was terrible. Tons of dirt spots and very thin. It stayed like that the rest of the round. I always find the customer service to be good as well.

The Bad:
The sand traps were awful. They were all hard as a rock and made it impossible to try and get up and down for par. The Tee boxes weren't the best. A lot of them were uneven and had a lot of old divot damage.

The Ugly:
The maintenance crew. They were very rude the entire round. 1 of the giant mower guys followed me around the entire front 9. He wouldn't even turn off the motor while I was putting. Rude! I ended up telling the pro shop at the turn and the crew member didn't seem to get the memo until hole #13.

I think I'll be waiting another year to play this course or until I see another positive review. There are just too many other solid courses in the area for me to play.

June 4, 2014. A beautiful day in Eastern Chula Vista on a Ted Robinson design with the usual waterfall or a pond fronting a par three or a par five. The course was in the best condition I have seen in many a year. The teeing areas had some bumps but were level with a nice seeding of grass. A few thin spots on the overall filled in fairways and the second cut was grown in on all areas surrounding the fairways and framed the greens nicely. Bunkers were groomed and the few I were in had depth enough for standard explosion shots. The greens were tiered and smooth with few ball marks and rolled at a medium to slow pace.
Our 9:15 starting time put our foursome behind a threesome that moved out nicely and allowed us to complete our round in just under four hours. No on course cart amenities on this day with the clubhouse snack bar serving as the halfway house.
Green fees are on the high side as I was quoted a $69 per player fee when reserving the tee time. Look for specials. Senior rate of $35.
Tee it up at Eastlake CC soon, as the summer heat will wilt the course in no short amount of time.

Layout of this course is really good, too bad the shape its in is not up to par.. Fairways played like rough, greens played like what a fairway should be.. if you can only see half your ball on the fairway, theirs a problem. Putts rolled slow and bumpy. Pace of play was horrible, nobody out there pushing the groups to keep pace.

Note: If you drive your ball 220-230 on average, play forward!

(Areas wont hold water)Bunkers were either hard or mushy from overwatering the faiways.Greens are good they punched last month so there a little slow as the grass is thick . All par threes were playing from the foward tees. Lots of seed on fairways and tee boxes. Over all course is in good condition.

Played Eastlake "Country Club" on 7/19 at 3pm. POP was 4hrs. I hadn't played this course in over a year but was offered a chance to play for $20 so I decided to check it out. The management at this course should be ashamed. Ted Robinson designed this course and it has a very nice layout but the management have let the fairways and greens get very poor.

Teeboxes: Seemed ok. Some divot damage.
Fairways: Lots of dirt and bare spots.
Rough: What rough? It looked the same as the fairway.
Greens: Hard as a rock. No one in my 4some could get any spin on their approach shots. Downhill putts stopped on a dime.
SandTraps: More like ClayTraps.

Overall, I don't think I'll be playing this course anytime soon, even at $20 rate. There are way too many courses in San Diego that are fun to play including Salt Creek which takes about the same amount of time to drive to for me.

It's summer and Eastlake is turning brown and bare. The bunkers are as always: a quarter inch of sand over pure clay so your sand shots are an adventure. The greens aren't too bad - if you can ignore the unfixed ball marks. And don't get me started on the marshals, err "ambassadors." Playing behind a slow group? Expect the "ambassadors" to do nothing more than offer them ice or water. All of this is a shame because the course layout is terrific. A Ted Robinson design which the ownership has let go. Unless you live close by, you're probably better off spending your money at another course.

Eastlake is a comfortable course with great views.... with lower scores. Course played pretty well just except for the too slow green speed.
