The word is April 1 is closing day to begin renovation. So, as you can imagine they are not trying to grow any grass, but the course is still fair to decent shape. Fairway's are pretty covered with thin & patchy green grass & dormant grass, but still play fine. Recommend using winter rules, because the balls can often settle between green tuft & dormant grass. Greens were decent. Rolling a tad quicker than typical, but a little bumpy Poana in the afternoon. Very playable and worth playing with any deals if in the area.

Played around noon on 2/14, pace of play 4 hours, course was curiously quiet.

Front nine is way easier than the back, which is much tighter with more forced carries. Fairways were patchy and rough was much the same. Greens were smooth and reasonably fast, not many ball marks. Still a lot of bare marks around some greens.
Supposed to close down for 4-5 months at the end of March, interesting to see what it looks like after that.

Enjoyed a twilight round with friends. Course is in over all solid shape. Fairway's were cut pretty tight. Looked like maybe they were planning on over seeding?? Never seen them that tight without overseeding after. Still were in great shape. Mostly green with full coverage.
Greens were in very good shape. No visuals of the past aeration, but slower then the "normal" slow of SV. Were a little on the bumpy side and held shots well. Nothing a good mow wouldn't fix. Traps mostly firm. Easy recommend.

Stayed a couple nights at San Vicente Inn playing the course Wednesday morning at 10:30. Usually lighter turnouts that day but steady member play seemingly women early then men's groups following along with public mixing in leaving few open times till afternoon. After a good breakfast at onsite Oaks Grille chipped and putted around practice green then called to tee behind a local twosome. Played a couple balls following along after 2 twosomes and a five. Back nine affords little opportunity to skip around therefore stayed in pattern to finish at 4 1/4 hours. Course has a fun mix of holes none alike and well separated from each other. There were several lakes, a creek and water drainages crossing the mostly tree lined fairways with a few large boulders lurking about. The white boxes 6228 were in good shape par 3s showed wear but easily playable. Fairways were green and ball sat up for woods and clean divots with irons. In two greenside bunkers one very damp one dry with the first an easier play out of than the dry one. Greens were much slower than the previous day at Barona and the front nine much smoother than the back when the poa annua began blooming with footprints taking hold. Really liked the course, surrounding mountain scenery, serenity and lots of turkeys moving about. Staff was friendly even made sure I got a yardage book and explained routing. Thursday morning greens were sprayed as part of regular maintenance to extend current conditions as they have detrimental pH, salts and nutrient problems which will require an entire course closure to completely rebuild them along with bunker renovations in the near future.

Played twilight 8/29/19 $25 5 pm POP 3:45. Was just able to get the round in. Last two holes were a race in the faded light. Course is in over all good to great shape. Fairway's full and mostly lush. A few browned areas mixed around, but mostly lush. Rough no issues and traps firm, but mostly consistent. Greens were back to their normal speed of SLOW and mostly bumpy from the day's growth & foot prints. They were receptive and looked in great shape, just slow.
Over all easy recommend.

Played 8/15/19 4 pm POP. 3.5 hrs $25 They have been getting ready for their annual Member/Guest tournament. The course was in the best shape I ever seen it for this time of year. They had dyed the greens, so they were a deep green color. They were in great shape. Typical summer conditions is for them to be a little woolly and slow. Today they were running at a decent speed of Medium and receptive. Very nice. I would expect them to back to their normal speed after the weekend? Fairways were in great shape. Almost complete coverage everywhere. Green & lush. Really nice to hit from. Traps a little firm but consistent. The word is April 1, 2020 is the new shut down date to replace all the greens. We'll see what fools day brings?

played the blacks on friday 4/12 on a golf now 26.00 hot deal, weather high 60's with 10 to 15 mph wind.first let me say it has been over a year since I have played up here in Ramona (about a 40 min drive) and if not for Rubyclub's last review I might not have gone...so just to be clear all the reviews I had read from other sourses said don't waste your money,no grass in the fairways,greens are like putting on dirt, well I am here to say its not true...the greens were very good(yes occasionaly small bald spots near the outer edges of 2 or 3 greens)fairways were lush,some large of trees have been cut down,bunkers were great, service was very good(grumpy had the day off)maintance is still working hard.As of today they tell me they have not recieved a time line when they will close to overhaul the course.as for the two things I think that were under par...all the black tee boxes had been punched and sanded and were not very leval at all, and my other concern is how the course treats single golfers(yes I was the only purchased tee time at 12..but they make no attempt to group with a three some that tee off 1152 or a single at 1212 so be forwarned if you need to play with others you might want to bring your own!
lastly sometimes you have to see a course to guage someone elses review..play it now and make own judgement before it closes.

They have delayed the reconstruction of the course until sometime in May, so the course is still open. As you may expect, they are not doing a lot because the reconstruction will be removing & replacing greens & fairways. The greens were firm. Running at a touch above medium. (Which is FAST for SV)
But were bumpy in the afternoon. Many sick areas mixed throughout the greens. Fairway's were in good to great shape. Green and mostly lush. We easily got the round in and then played 4 mores holes to finish the day. Worth a day if you can find a deal before they close for the year of renovation.
