Played my GK Cup 12 Match here versus Matt today on yet another Chamber of Commerce day. I’ll let Matt summarize the match results, but as for the course, it was in good shape overall. The greens are recovering nicely and all the other parts of the course have stood the test of the drought quite well. The course review:

Tee boxes: Okay shape overall. Some of the green tee boxes had unlevel turf so finding a great spot to tee off from took an extra second. The par 3 tee boxes had been chewed up by the time we got to them, but about normal for the amount of play this course gets.

Fairways: Excellent shape for me. A good amount of roll on drives, only one divot all day, and visually they looked as good as they played.

Rough: Great shape overall. The length seemed nowhere near that of the Farmers and after, but by no means do you want to be in it. It’s still thick enough to rip the club from your hands in its deepest parts. Anyone who takes their medicine though can punch out.

Bunkers: I was in two today and both had wonderful sand to hit out of. Condition of bunkers was good as well, with previous players today doing a good job of raking the sand.

Greens: Okay shape but as the aeration alert says, it’s been a shade over three weeks since they were aerated. They did roll as true as could be given the condition, but bumps were present and the sand hasn’t disappeared 100%.

ETC: Pace was good for a weekend at Torrey at just over 4.5 hours. Staff was friendly with the cart girl coming around a few times. Match was everything you could ask for. At the end of the day it’s Torrey!

Played roughly 12 holes here yesterday (5/23) with my friend and his co-workers teeing off at roughly 4:10pm. The price was right and we knew we wouldn't finish, instead focusing more on enjoyment of the 12 holes we knew we could easily get to. The course is still about a week and half or so from getting to where it should be after aeration, but I just can't say no to Torrey North. Pace of play was sluggish at first with lots of beginners out there finding the rough, but after 4 things opened up a bit. On to the review...

Tee boxes: Still healing from the effects of the punch earlier this month. Granted they are tee boxes so it's not like it's impossible to find ground to drive tees into, but visually they weren't looking like what Torrey usually does. Ground seemed level enough and the "blue" tee boxes probably get enough play in one day than most courses get in a week.

Fairways: Very good considering the amount of people out. Most drives got good roll and I don't remember a single bad lie. Visually they are pleasing to the eye and more importantly, when you are in play, they are everything you need to get good shots off.

Rough: It's Torrey Pines, so you'd better know what you are getting into when you miss fairways or get cute trying to act like a tour pro. I saw more than one player get completely humbled and the rough is probably at 65% of what it plays during the Farmers. Best of luck!

Bunkers: Good condition overall. Some random wet spots but it probably was misting earlier in the morning. Ample rakes and people did a good job of cleaning up after themselves. Sand texture was somewhere between beach sand and Augusta; fair enough to hit from and land soft.

Greens: Still recovering from aeration so roll here today was pretty slow and bumpy. Almost every green had significant areas that were all sand so I would give them at least another week or two before you practice your putts here. Even so, breaks here was gnarly and the ocean pull was evident.

ETC: Starter this time was great in keeping the flow going. The staff here was friendly enough in the shop and window; cart barn employees could probably use a lesson in customer service from the Lodge staff, who really know how to serve. Pace as mentioned was slow at first but a full 18 holes would have probably taken about 4.5 hours so not terribly slow. Next month should be a great time to visit.

Went off at 12:15 on a 12:10 tee time but POP was good (4.5 hrs) for a Sunday with all those in the know staying away from South until it heals from punching and were all lined up to play the North (wait list was 10 deep). Course is in good shape, everything is still hard and running fast (had 188 in on the par 5 9th for my second shot). As it was a bit later in the day the greens were a bit slow from bumps in spots but fast with roll out on others. Until they punch the North next month or at least for a couple more weeks North is the spot at Torrey.

Well I haven't written a review in quite a while now. This was only the second time that I have played Torrey North since they re-designed the course. I went out on Monday April 9th and I think the course is very challenging but very fair. The conditions were more firm than I expected and the greens are almost rock hard. Its very difficult to get the ball close to the hole even for very skilled players. I'm hoping that the greens become more receptive sooner than later! I think the course is more fun to play after the redesign and the views are definitely better with some of the tree removals. All in all, this is an excellent course and the value is amazing for what you get especially if you are a resident. The fairways and tee boxes were both really good and the overall condition of the course was good, maybe a little more thin than I expected but still very good. The pace of play wasn't bad at all and it seemed like a lot of singles were getting out fairly easily on the day we played. Definitely a must play in San Diego and I'm looking forward to getting out there again soon. I believe they are punching the greens soon so that should soften them up after they heal as well.

Course is in decent condition but play is SLOW. They have jacked up the greens at this course so much with the renovation people take forever putting. Pace of play is nearly always 5 hours plus UNLESS you get off at 7am or earlier. Fairways are a lot firmer than they used to be and so are the greens. Takes a great shot to hold the greens. My advice, get a real early tee time or wait on every shot you hit all day long.

So the greens are a little slower and will pick up some of this sand in the morning with some of the morning moisture. Everything else is pretty much the same. I’d give the greens a week to fully recover but all in all they are not that bad.

Fairways: nice to play from and running out a bit
Rough: mown down but still sticky and penal
Bunkers: a bit inconsistent in depth and texture but smooth
Greens: hard, mostly rolling smooth (some scruffy looking areas but still rolled well through them) and medium fast
POP: good at 4.5 hrs
Customer service: saw the snack cart a few times
A top quality, fun, solid course, most definitely recommended

Was 3rd off yesterday and the pace was fantastic. Finished in less than 4 hours and the group behind us was teeing off on 14 as we were walking up 17. I'm not sure if they let someone play through but even as we finished on 18 there was no one on 17.

I think the rains from last week slowed down the pace and firmness of the greens so that took some adjustments. Balls didn't roll out as much on approach shots and my first couple of putts were pretty short. They were still great however and will probably get quicker as the weather is turning nicer this week. So its probably back to "normal" later this week.

Fairways I probably shouldn't rate as I was playing out of the rough for most of the day. However they did provide some roll. A few places of divot damage but nothing too bad. Don't really remember any bad spots in the fairway thou so overall very nice to hit from.

Rough was not too penalizing although the ball could sit down. I was able to get some hybrids on a few shots since the ball was sitting up. You'll find a few dead spots out there and some lush spots.

Found a couple of bunkers and was in the fairway bunker on 7 and that sand was so soft. My feet basically sunk right in but that was the exception. Other bunkers I played seemed pretty normal, not too soft and not too compact.

Tee boxes were normal. Plenty of room to tee it up even on par 3 and all seemed to be generally level.
